AFL Fantasy News: Lewis Johnston

Won't play soon: It isn't just the old Swans getting injured, Lewis Johnston will be one of several young Swans out long-term.

Source: Sydney site
Injury setback for Johnston

The Sydney Swans’ first-round draft pick Lewis Johnston will miss the next 12 weeks due to a foot injury suffered at training last week.

The injury is a setback for the number 12 draft pick who had been playing good football for the Swans Reserves in the early part of the season.

AFL Fantasy News: Cameron Ling

Ling out: Fantasy teams with Ling probably have to trade this week, to replace him as he will be out for possibly a month. The Cats will need to find another tagger, Rooke may be used in that role more, or they could go for some pace with Hogan or Djerrkura.

Another impact in AFL fantasy, many star onballers on other teams will have it easier for the next month with Ling out.

Source: Herald Sun
Cameron Ling to miss a month

CAMERON Ling will be out of action for up to a month after Geelong revealed today he was suffering from an Achilles injury.

Cats' ruckman Brad Ottens has also had a set-back in his recovery from a knee injury suffered against Richmond in Round 2. Thompson said he would miss another three to four weeks.

Malfunction, Need Input: Who Is Playing Fox Sports AFL Fantasy?

The Fox Sports game doesn't get the attention that SuperCoach and Dream Team do, but it is also a fun game.

The AFL Coaches used to be part of the game, it was a good idea last year but didn't really work right so that must be why you do not sign coaches this season. More annoyingly, prizes have disappeared compared to last year too. So that is a reason why some may not be bothered playing. A new addition is the Wildcard, it seems that allows the team to be cleaned out and started again during the season, this can only be done once.

The All Footy team at Fox Sports finished in the top 50 for the season last year, so that could mean a few good players were signed for the team, or that many of the best fantasy coaches were not competing in the game.

The possible answers are below to submit, press comment to do that, for the question are you playing Fox Sports AFL Fantasy?

Playing
Not
No, never heard of it

AFL Fantasy News: Justin Koschitzke

Out a week: Koschiztke will need to sit on the bench for fantasy teams this week.

Fantasy coaches may get another look at McEvoy, but don't sign him unless there is a long-term injury to Koschitzke, Riewoldt, King or Gardiner.

Source: Fox Sports
St Kilda big man Justin Koschitzke to be sidelined for at least one match

"It's certainly on the lower end and we're hopeful of a week, at worst two," Lyon said.

The coach hopes Hudghton will be on the verge of a comeback within a month.

AFL Fantasy News: Heath Shaw

Wouldn't have played last week anyway: He hurt many fantasy teams last year, and H Shaw is again causing a few problems for fantasy teams. An injury is going to keep him out of the Collingwood team another week.

There could be good news for those who invested in Collingwood's Steele Sidebottom. He may debut, and the Magpies could use him in the back line with Shaw out and he can get stats there.

Source: The Age
Sore Shaw sidelined for Anzac Day clash

The leg soreness, which emerged during the Geelong match in round three, would have kept Shaw out of last week's Brisbane Lions game regardless of his suspension from the match.

Steele Sidebottom, the Pies' first draft pick from the 2008 national draft, was among the Collingwood best in the VFL last week and could be a chance to make his debut in the blockbuster game against Essendon if Collingwood changes its winning side.

AFL Fantasy News: Jed Adcock

Might play: Jed Adcock can stay on fantasy teams as his injury is minor and he could play this week. While both he and Charman were on crutches after their last game, only Charman has a serious injury.

Adcock's fantasy season has been very eventful so far. He started with one and a half games of few stats, but his round 3 performance not only stopped a potential price drop, it increased his value. Last round, he only played three quarters but was again in the stats. So while he may never get back to his 2007 SuperCoach value of around $600,000, Adcock is playing a lot better than his opening price this season.

Source: The Courier-Mail
Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss wants return of mid-year draft

Scans have cleared Jed Adcock of any serious damage to his ankle and he is a chance to play this weekend but the news wasn't good for Charman.

"It will be four to six weeks, it is just a sprained ankle but it is a very bad one," Voss said.

AFL Fantasy News: Hayden Skipworth

Hamstring: There may be more updates about Skipworth later in the week. New results for his injury could change what fantasy coaches do.

Estimating three weeks out, some fantasy coaches will sit him to conserve a trade and to hopefully make a bit more money with him when he returns, other fantasy coaches will thank him for making some money and trade him out.

Essendon are a difficult team for fantasy coaches as they have many players who could get into the side. They will also need to find room for Welsh and Prismall later in the season.

Source: Essendonfc site
Skipworth to miss three weeks

“We are still waiting on the results of the reports but our medical staff are telling us it is a minimum grade one strain which will keep him out for two to three weeks,” Hamilton said.

“It could possibly be more but it just depends on how quickly he recovers. Obviously it has been less than 24 hours since the injury occurred so sometimes you need a couple more days in order to get the full view of what the outcome will be."

AFL Fantasy News: Nick Dal Santo

Tag, Dal Santo is it: Maybe not the time to be signing Dal Santo, as the Power will be looking to shut him down. If Dal Santo can get another 30 possessions in this game, it will certainly prove that he is an elite fantasy onballer who can be depended on all the time.

Source: AFL site
Dal Santo in Cornes' crosshairs

Cornes, 26, was at his negating best last week, holding Hawthorn skipper Sam Mitchell to just 16 possessions and playing a big part in the Power's 30-point win.

Dal Santo has brushed aside an inconsistent 2008 season, which saw him dropped back to the VFL for one match.

AFL Fantasy News: Mitch Clark

No ruck depth for Lions: When Leuenberger went down, the logical choice for fantasy coaches was Charman. Now Charman is out, the only choice if you want to sign a fantasy ruckman from the Lions is Clark. He is mobile and athletic and for the next couple of months he should play a lot more than he ever has for Brisbane.

If only the Lions had used a late draft pick on Jeff White, he would still be a fantasy star. If Clark gets hurt, then a rookie ruckman for the Lions would be elevated to be their number 1 ruckman.

Source: Brisbane site
Charman out for 4-6 weeks

BRISBANE Lions ruck stocks have been thrown into disarray with confirmation that Jamie Charman will miss four to six weeks with an ankle injury.

Leuenberger is on the long-term injury list with a knee injury and will miss three months of football.

Source: Brisbane site
Northern Territory no match for Lions

Sidelined until now due to osteitis pubis, Murray was prominent at the centre bounces and even stronger in the air around the ground in his short stints during the first half.

Standing at 200cm and 98, the 18-year-old gave first use of the ball to the busy Albert Proud and Scott Harding, who gave the Thunder nightmares all night.

AFL Fantasy News: Hamish Hartlett

Plethora of players for Power: Port Adelaide are close to full strength so a few players who can produce fantasy points may miss out on a spot in their team. H Hartlett played his first game and will be someone to sign if he produces this week.

Source: AFL site
Cassisi, Shaun Burgoyne return for Power

The availability of Cassisi and Burgoyne will make for one interesting selection meeting at Alberton this week. Promising teenager Hamish Hartlett came into the side against Hawthorn and will be hard to squeeze out after a polished 23-possession display on debut.

David Rodan, who was a late replacement for Shaun Burgoyne, starred with 28 possessions and a goal and Tom Logan, who came in for Cassisi, effectively shut-down Hawks playmaker Luke Hodge.

AFL Fantasy News: Brad Green

Broken jaw: Melbourne will be without Green for a couple of months. Fantasy teams will want to trade him out.

Melbourne will have a few veterans returning, old McDonald could play this round and Robertson isn't far away.

Fantasy teams may also have to deal with injuries to Koschitzke, Charman, Skipworth and Guerra. Depending on the depth of the fantasy team, these players may be able to sit on the fantasy bench for a couple of rounds.

Source: AFL site
Green faces surgery after breaking jaw

BRAD Green is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks after breaking his jaw during Melbourne's eight-point win over Richmond at the MCG on Sunday.

He said that Russell Robertson and Matthew Whelan were two weeks away from returning to the seniors.

Injury update

Brent Guerra (Hawthorn) hamstring Hamstring tear. Likely to miss 2-3 weeks.

Hayden Skipworth (Essendon) hamstring Will have scans today to assess severity of injury.

Fantasy Player Of The Week - Round 4

Gary Ablett

Nearly 50 possessions, his fantasy coaches will be very pleased. If Ablett can do that against the Crows in an away game, then the numbers he could have against Melbourne in a couple of weeks could set a record.

Bargain Performer Of The Week

Jaxson Barham

Very few fantasy coaches would have had Barham on their team before this round, but now many will be thinking about signing him. He had a huge debut game, and would be someone to sign if he wasn't at such a deep AFL club.

AFL 2009 Round 4: Eagles 116 - Bulldogs 83

West Coast

Andrew Embley - 28 possessions, 7 marks, 1 goal
Lost some money after playing three games, but this game was great.

Daniel Kerr - 22 handballs, 7 kicks, 3 frees for, 1 goal
Is getting some big totals for possessions now.

Mark Nicoski - 19 possessions
Seemed more involved in this game, playing the small and quick Bulldogs probably suited how he plays.

Adam Selwood - 27 possessions
A fantasy bargain who will have a big price rise.

David Wirrpanda - 20 kicks, 8 handballs, 15 marks, 7 tackles, 1 goal
No signs of injury there.

Western

Jason Akermanis - 26 possessions
Another big game from the veteran star.

Matthew Boyd - 30 possessions, 2 goals
Did a bit more with Cooney out.

Ryan Griffen - 24 possessions, 1 goal
Has increased his stats this year.

Shaun Higgins - 4 goals, 20 possessions
Price will keep going up.

Liam Picken - 20 possessions, 8 tackles
One of the unexpected stars of the fantasy season, due to his very low starting price and ability to keep his spot in the Bulldogs’ side.

AFL 2009 Round 4: Demons 100 - Tigers 92

Melbourne

James Frawley - 15 possessions, 7 marks
This season he is showing a lot of improvement.

Paul Johnson - 16 possessions, 6 marks
A better game, but has been a bit disappointing in 2009 so far.

Brad Miller - 17 possessions, 10 marks, 3 goals
Melbourne were a bit taller in this game with Newton also playing forward, this may have helped Miller increase his stats.

Ricky Petterd - 12 possessions, 5 marks, 2 goals, 2 behinds
A fantasy defender who is playing forward for Melbourne.

Jared Rivers - 15 possessions, 7 marks
A couple of solid games in a row.

Richmond

Joel Bowden - 44 possessions, 13 marks
Didn't help Richmond to a win, but those numbers are great for fantasy teams.

Andrew Collins - 20 possessions, 2 goals
Wait to see what he does in future games before signing.

Jordan McMahon - 28 possessions, 13 marks
Not a certainty to play for Richmond, but he can get fantasy points.

Robin Nahas - 12 possessions, 4 tackles, 3 frees for, 1 goal
A player who keeps hustling and that produced stats in this game.

Alex Rance - 14 handballs, 5 kicks, 5 tackles
Those who signed him last week made a great move.

AFL 2009 Round 4: Kangaroos 69 - Bombers 57

North Melbourne

David Hale - 12 kicks, 11 marks, 4 goals, 3 behinds
Last week he was bald and injured, he was kicking goals in this game and seemed to have an afro.

Brent Harvey - 33 possessions, 7 marks, 3 goals
He has dropped value, and is someone to sign as he has shown he can still produce big fantasy scores.

Sam Power - 23 possessions, 11 marks
Has been very good for fantasy stats the last year and a bit since moving from Bulldogs.

Ben Warren - 10 kicks, 7 marks, 2 behinds
May not be in the side very often.

Jack Ziebell - 22 possessions, 6 marks, 1 goal
Fantasy coaches will have to decide if they want to keep him or trade him out when he has made a lot of money.

Essendon

Alwyn Davey - 15 possessions, 5 tackles
Adding speed to the forward line, and while the tackles are good he should be able to kick a goal or two.

Matthew Lloyd - 17 possessions, 8 marks, 3 goals, 2 behinds
Doing a lot more the last two weeks compared to the first couple of games.

Scott Lucas - 14 kicks, 9 marks
Increasing his stats a bit but fantasy coaches will be wanting more goals from him.

Michael Quinn - 8 possessions
Not as good as his first game.

David Zaharakis - 20 possessions
Only two Bombers, Watson and Stanton, had more possessions in this game than Zaharakis did.

AFL 2009 Round 4: Cats 132 - Crows 86

Geelong

Gary Ablett - 33 handballs, 13 kicks, 7 marks, 3 tackles, 3 goals
It was at Adelaide and they brought Shirley into the team, none of that stopped Ablett.

Jimmy Bartel - 30 possessions, 5 frees for
Other Cats with 30 or more possessions were Corey, Ling and Selwood.

Tom Lonergan - 16 possessions, 8 marks, 6 tackles
Into the team as Milburn did not play.

Shane Mumford - 1 goal, 6 possessions, 6 tackles, 8 hitouts
Mumford and West are not options for fantasy teams right now.

David Wojcinski - 22 possessions, 7 marks
Started on the field, was used off the bench in other games, and that helped him get involved early in the game.

Adelaide

Nathan Bock - 19 possessions
An "indefinite suspension" that only lasted one week, the Crows probably hurt many fantasy coaches with that decision.

Tyson Edwards - 25 possessions, 1 goal
The oldsters there, Goodwin also had 25 possessions, had good games.

Andy Otten - 18 possessions
Might have been used in the Scott Stevens' role in the back line.

Kurt Tippett - 13 possessions, 7 marks, 5 tackles, 1 goal
Flying high and using his reach to outmark opponents.

Taylor Walker - 8 kicks, 5 marks, 2 goals, 2 behinds
Providing some excitement to the Adelaide side, and making a bit of money for fantasy teams.

AFL 2009 Round 4: Saints 111 - Dockers 28

St Kilda

Steven Baker - 21 possessions, 9 marks
Every Saint, except for Koschiztke who hurt his hamstring, had a lot of stats in this game, Baker won't have numbers like that very often.

Nick Dal Santo - 31 possessions, 2 goals
The St Kilda schedule gets a bit tougher now, so K Cornes could be hunting NDS next round.

Sam Gilbert - 28 possessions, 8 marks
His price keeps going up and up.

Farren Ray - 27 possessions, 8 marks
It wasn't a certainty when the trade was made, but Ray is one more player who has become a much better fantasy player after moving to a new club.

Nick Riewoldt - 15 kicks, 9 marks, 5 goals
0 behinds, so his kicking for goal is much better than in previous games.

Fremantle

Daniel Gilmore - 13 kicks, 14 marks
He didn't play well, like most Dockers, but for fantasy teams he showed what he can do.

Antoni Grover - 20 possessions, 5 marks
A milestone game and Super Grover played well for stats.

Stephen Hill - 13 possessions
Hill and Suban, 15 possessions, were not the worst Fremantle players.

Byron Schammer - 32 possessions, 8 marks
It didn't seem like the Dockers had the ball enough for someone to get over 30 possessions, so Schammer had a big game.

Chris Tarrant - 10 possessions, 3 frees against
Some of the "recycled" players could be in the WAFL if the Dockers decide to go with their youth.

AFL 2009 Round 4: Swans 84 - Blues 67

Sydney

Ed Barlow - 16 possessions, 1 goal
Not secure in the Sydney side yet, but did a lot of good things in this game.

Kieren Jack - 20 possessions
A defensive onballer, he produced more fantasy points than he normally would.

Ryan O'Keefe - 16 possessions, 6 tackles
Price will continue to drop, but when he gets back to his best form he could be a bargain that many sign.

Rhyce Shaw - 21 kicks, 8 handballs, 7 marks
His best game as a Swan.

Kristin Thornton - 7 possessions, 6 marks, 1 goal
His first game, not someone for fantasy teams to have unless he really cements a regular spot.

Carlton

Paul Bower - 24 possessions, 9 marks
Doesn't play on the big forwards and is able to bring in a good amount of stats.

Richard Hadley - 19 possessions
Continues his very good start to the season.

Chris Judd - 30 possessions, 1 goal
Having a fantasy captain playing against Sydney is often a bad idea, but Judd showed that some players can still get stats.

Bret Thornton - 23 possessions, 14 marks
Chipping around the back line helped his stats, and he also didn’t have Hall to worry about as he didn’t play.

Jarrad Waite - 25 kicks, 6 handballs, 13 marks
Had around half those stats in the first quarter as he dominated all over the ground.

AFL 2009 Round 4: Power 115 - Hawks 85

Port Adelaide

Travis Boak - 32 possessions, 10 marks, 5 tackles
Playing like Pendlebury, covering a lot of ground and accumulating a huge amount of stats.

Chad Cornes - 31 possessions, 14 marks
Is now again at the top of fantasy AFL.

Hamish Hartlett - 23 possessions, 11 marks
His first game, could be someone to trade for soon, although the Power were missing the Burgoynes and Cassisi who would get a lot of stats.

Daniel Motlop - 18 possessions, 5 behinds
0 goals, but at least he increased his possessions for this game, and will be back kicking goals next time.

Danyle Pearce - 33 possessions, 11 marks, 1 goal
One of many Power players with big numbers, some others were Salopek, K Cornes, Krakouer and Rodan.

Hawthorn

Chance Bateman - 33 possessions
Many Hawks are hurt or down for stats, but he is playing even better than he did last year.

Jordan Lewis - 24 possessions, 5 marks
His first game, so he was back with the stats that were expected.

Garry Moss - 25 possessions, 10 marks, 4 tackles
Unexpected high stats.

Brad Sewell - 28 possessions
The Hawks are getting most of their midfield back.

Brendan Whitecross - 23 possessions, 8 marks
Is making a lot of money for those who started the season with him on their fantasy bench.

AFL Fantasy News: Trent Cotchin

Richmond's future: Fantasy coaches may want to start planning a trade for Cotchin in a few weeks, if they have a vacancy in the midfield. If the Tigers can't drop one player, it is Richardson. Maybe next in line to always be in the team, when healthy, is Cotchin. He is also at a very good fantasy price, so you could trade him in and move out a more expensive midfielder, to get some extra money to use but the stats could be the same.

Three to five weeks away could be when some fantasy teams begin to add Cotchin. By that time, the players that were cheap to start the year, like Dangerfield, could have made enough money that they can be traded for Cotchin without needing to spend extra cash.

Source: The Age
Tiger trio offers a spark of hope

Likewise Cotchin, arguably the Tigers' best young player, is expected to need to play two or three VFL games to recover fitness after the Achilles injury that has troubled him, before being considered for senior selection.

"Trent has been doing a lot of cross-training so his general fitness is pretty good, so we will wait and see how he goes before saying how many games he will need for Coburg before he comes back into the senior side," Monaghan said.

AFL 2009 Round 4: Magpies 90 - Lions 73

Collingwood

Jaxson Barham - 28 possessions, 6 marks, 9 tackles
A lot of stats in his first game, fantasy coaches can watch what he does when he plays next week, he is a fantasy player with a very low price.

Josh Fraser - 23 possessions, 23 hitouts
One of the top fantasy ruckmen this season.

Tarkyn Lockyer - 21 kicks, 8 handballs, 14 marks, 2 goals
Great numbers for a fantasy defender.

Scott Pendlebury - 35 possessions
Just keeps accumulating stats.

Anthony Rocca - 7 kicks
Not someone for fantasy teams at the moment, and there was a moment when "Pebbles" went up for the mark only to be denied with a spoil from "Bam Bam", Daniel Rich.

Brisbane

Jared Brennan - 20 possessions, 4 marks, 4 tackles
The usual stuff, the ball in one hand and a few odd kicks, but not enough stats to sign right now.

Mitch Clark - 14 possessions, 24 hitouts
Leuenberger was hurt last week, Charman may have been hurt in this game, so maybe Clark is their only ruckman now.

Bradd Dalziell - 28 possessions, 8 marks, 2 goals
Back to last year's numbers.

Tim Notting - 11 possessions, 1 goal
The Lions had a number of players that seemed to struggle, Notting is one who may find it difficult to keep his spot and isn't a good choice for fantasy teams.

Michael Rischitelli - 20 possessions, 7 marks, 9 tackles, 1 goal
Solid numbers, and he was also hit solidly as he contested a loose ball with Simon Prestigiacomo.

All Footy SuperCoach Team 2009 - Round 4

If Ottens was to be traded out, it was Kreuzer or Leuenberger who would have come into the team. Kreuzer didn't do much more than J White, Leuenberger hurt his knee, sometimes the best trades are the ones that are not made.

Masten may have had 7 fantasy points in SuperCoach last round. Not good. Masten will be traded out of the Dream Team side, but will get another chance or two in SuperCoach. Hasleby and Adcock showed what they are capable of in round 3, and Captain Cornes was a solid choice as Chad Cornes wasn't contained by Melbourne.

The captain for this round is a difficult choice. Bartel is often a safe choice and nearly went with him, C Cornes could have been captain another week, decided to go with Cross.

No trading this week, but are looking at plans to use two or three trades soon to get Hodge when he drops as far as he will.

For the first league game, the team is playing Sheedy.

AFL Fantasy News: Kyle Cheney

Demon dropped: A bit annoying for many fantasy coaches, Kyle Cheney and Jake Spencer are only emergencies this round. Those fantasy coaches who have JON as their secret weapon won't be able to use him this week as Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls is an emergency, more importantly for fantasy AFL, Nahas is back. Those who want to sign Rance have two hours to do it.

Ebert is out, Fletcher and Masten stay in the West Coast side. Fantasy coaches with Masten, and a good player like Rich or Dangerfield on the bench, may decide to send out Masten for a cheap player, Beams or Zaharakis, to get some extra money. Masten does have a good chance to get stats in this game, so some fantasy coaches may want to hold onto him for one more week. Harbrow is in for Cooney, that may leave a few more stats for Cross, Giansiracusa, Boyd, and Griffen who seems to play well as the big ground there suits his hard running.

McVeigh is back for Essendon, he should have huge stats. Quinn returns, it is only his second game so his price will still be the same next week. While it would seem unlikely that Quinn could keep his spot every week, Marty Clarke showed a couple of years ago that it can happen. D Fletcher has been without a real opponent for parts of games and Ryder has been getting fantasy points as a forward, they may need to play more accountable defensive roles if Petrie and Hale are getting marks. Ziebell and Swallow will continue to make money, Greenwood is close to a game and Harris is still on the outside.

AFL Fantasy News: Jared Brennan

The genetic freak is back: Faster than a key position player, able to leap over midfielders, Brisbane's Brennan can do a lot of things that other players cannot and that can mean a lot of fantasy points if everything is working for him.

See what Brennan does in the first couple of games, as he could be someone to trade for as a forward or a fantasy midfielder. It will depend on where the Lions play him. If they allow him to run around the middle, like the Swans use Goodes, then his fantasy price could be low compared to his stats. But if Brennan is sent back as the Lions don't have a lot of height there, then his price could go down.

Source: The Courier-Mail
Lions wary of Collingwood star Anthony Rocca X factor at the Gabba

As expected, Jamie Charman replaces Matthew Leuenberger who is out for three months with a knee injury.

Brennan always lifts for clashes against the Pies and coach Michael Voss was quick to recall him as soon as he proved he had recovered from a quad injury suffered during the NAB Cup.

AFL Fantasy News: Hamish Hartlett

It's Adam's Brother: H Hartlett could become a very popular fantasy player, but it will depend on when he plays his third game of the season. He will play his first this round, and is probably a player to consider trading for when they are named before they play their third, and the price rises afterwards.

If Hartlett establishes himself as a regular for the Power, he could be brought into fantasy teams that want to send out someone on their bench like Robinson or Dangerfield who has made money for them. As Hartlett was a very early draft pick, he isn't at the low price that someone like Beams has, but compared to most of the other players he is cheap.

Source: Port Adelaide site
Selection: Hartlett to debut

“Hamish was in great form over the pre-season before he had a minor shoulder injury, which kept him out for a couple of weeks. He came back through West Adelaide and has shown some good form in the SANFL and being such a high draft pick, it’s no surprise we wanted to get him into our side. He’s got a great kick, he reads the game well and shows great poise under pressure.

AFL Fantasy Watch: Most will expect the Saints to do more than they did last week against the Eagles, so having a Saint as a fantasy captain could work.

Fremantle

B: Roger Hayden, Michael Johnson, Chris Tarrant
HB: Josh Head, Antoni Grover, Steven Dodd
C: Rhys Palmer, Paul Hasleby, Garrick Ibbotson
HF: Daniel Gilmore, Luke McPharlin, Byron Schammer
F: Brett Peake, Matthew Pavlich, Kepler Bradley
Foll: Aaron Sandilands, Ryan Crowley, David Mundy
I/C: Dean Solomon, Stephen Hill, Nic Suban, Paul Duffield
Emg: Matt de Boer, Clayton Hinkley, Ryan Murphy

In: Hayden, Duffield
Out: Greg Broughton (ankle), Clayton Hinkley

AFL Fantasy Watch: They are sticking with Hill and Suban, the right thing to do, although fantasy coaches shouldn't expect big fantasy scores from them this week. Pavlich is someone who is supposed to produce big scores, and he has a chance to do it as the Saints don't have a player that can contain him. Hasleby was back among the stats last round.

Sydney v Carlton - Round 4 Teams

Sydney

B: Craig Bolton, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Martin Mattner
HB: Rhyce Shaw, Ted Richards, Nick Malceski
C: Jarrad McVeigh, Brett Kirk, Craig Bird
HF: Ryan O’Keefe, Heath Grundy, Kieren Jack
F: Paul Bevan, Barry Hall, Jarred Moore
Foll: Darren Jolly, Adam Goodes, Jude Bolton
I/C: Ed Barlow, Brett Meredith, Kristin Thornton, Jesse White

Emg: Luke Ablett, Ryan Brabazon, Mike Pyke

In: Thornton
Out: Jared Crouch

AFL Fantasy Watch: Meredith may make fantasy teams some money. Malceski is still an affordable signing. It is too late to get Jolly, his price has jumped after two huge games against Hawthorn and Brisbane.

Carlton

B: Chris Johnson, Bret Thornton, Kade Simpson
HB: Shaun Grigg, Paul Bower, Jordan Russell
C: Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs, Nick Stevens
HF: Simon Wiggins, Cameron Cloke, Jarrad Waite
F: Matthew Kreuzer, Brendan Fevola, Eddie Betts
Foll: Sam Jacobs, Richard Hadley, Chris Judd
I/C: Dennis Armfield, Ryan Houlihan, Aaron Joseph, Mitch Robinson

Emg: Steven Browne, Setanta O’hAilpin, Heath Scotland

In: Armfield
Out: Jeff Garlett

AFL Fantasy Watch: More money for those with Robinson, Jacobs and Joseph. Those with Garlett miss out this round. It is probably best to not add a Blue this week, as the Swans can shut people down.

West Coast v Western Bulldogs - Round 4 Teams

West Coast

B: Adam Hunter, Darren Glass, Mark Nicoski
HB: Shannon Hurn, Eric Mackenzie, Brett Jones
C: Adam Selwood, Matt Priddis, Matt Rosa
HF: Andrew Embley, Ashley Hansen, Brent Staker
F: Mark LeCras, Quinten Lynch, David Wirrpanda
Foll: Dean Cox, Daniel Kerr, Tyson Stenglein

I/C (from): Mitch Brown, Ryan Davis, Brad Ebert, Chad Fletcher, Will Schofield, Chris Masten, Ben McKinley

In: Staker, Wirrpanda, Schofield

AFL Fantasy Watch: Staker and Wirrpanda are in, so who they leave out tomorrow when they name their final side is important. M Brown is making some money for fantasy teams, he probably keeps his spot. McKinley could miss, and the Eagles may also choose between the old, Fletcher, and the new, Masten.

Western Bulldogs

B: Dylan Addison, Brian Lake, Dale Morris
HB: Lindsay Gilbee, Tom Williams, Ryan Hargrave
C: Liam Picken, Matthew Boyd, Nathan Eagleton
HF: Shaun Higgins, Mitch Hahn, Brad Johnson
F: Josh Hill, Will Minson, Jason Akermanis
Foll: Ben Hudson, Daniel Cross, Ryan Griffen

I/C (from): Andrejs Everitt, Daniel Giansiracusa, Jarrad Grant, Jarrod Harbrow, Sam Reid, Stephen Tiller, Callan Ward

In: Everitt, Grant, Harbrow, Reid
Out: Adam Cooney (knee)

AFL Fantasy Watch: Cooney can sit on a fantasy bench this week.

Richmond v Melbourne - Round 4 Teams

Richmond

B: Chris Newman, Kelvin Moore, Alex Rance
HB: Tom Hislop, Luke McGuane, Dean Polo
C: Matt White, Shane Tuck, Andrew Collins
HF: Nathan Brown, Matthew Richardson, Joel Bowden
F: Mitch Morton, Jack Riewoldt, Brett Deledio
Foll: Troy Simmonds, Daniel Jackson, Nathan Foley

I/C (from): Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, Jordan McMahon, Robin Nahas, Angus Graham, Shane Edwards, Daniel Connors, Jake King

In: Collins, Connors, McMahon, Nahas, Oakley-Nicholls
Out: Jay Schulz, Richard Tambling

AFL Fantasy Watch: Tambling gets the blame for last week. McMahon, who got the blame for round 1, could be back. If fantasy coaches want a Tiger this week it will be Rance, although Richardson is another player to get if you can afford it.

Melbourne

B: Neville Jetta, Matthew Warnock, Jared Rivers
HB: James Frawley, Stefan Martin, Aaron Davey
C: Jamie Bennell, Lynden Dunn, Brock McLean
HF: Matthew Bate, Brent Moloney, Michael Newton
F: Brad Miller, Colin Sylvia, Cale Morton
Foll: John Meesen, Cameron Bruce, Brad Green

I/C (from): Paul Johnson, Nathan Jones, Clint Bartram, Ricky Petterd, Kyle Cheney, Addam Maric, Jake Spencer

In: Maric, Spencer, Newton

AFL Fantasy Watch: Meesen keeps his spot, but P Johnson may miss. Not a lot can be done now, wait until tomorrow to see who is on their bench and who is only an emergency.

North Melbourne v Essendon - Round 4 Teams

North Melbourne

B: Scott McMahon, Scott Thompson, Daniel Pratt
HB: Gavin Urquhart, Lachlan Hansen, Josh Gibson
C: Brady Rawlings, Michael Firrito, Leigh Harding
HF: Brent Harvey, Drew Petrie, Ben Warren
F: Matt Campbell, David Hale, Lindsay Thomas
Foll: Hamish McIntosh, Adam Simpson, Jack Ziebell

I/C (from): Ed Lower, Daniel Harris, Sam Power, Andrew Swallow, Josh Smith, Todd Goldstein, Levi Greenwood

In: Warren, Lower, Goldstein, Greenwood, Harris
Out: Daniel Wells (hip), Corey Jones

AFL Fantasy Watch: Wells is a bit like Cooney, losing money for fantasy teams and out now with an injury, but when he gets back to top health he could start producing like he should. Hale was badly hurt last week, but is named to play here. Hale's price will drop for a while.

Essendon

B: Dustin Fletcher, Darcy Daniher, Henry Slattery
HB: Tayte Pears, Adam McPhee, Courtenay Dempsey
C: Angus Monfries, Brent Stanton, Ricky Dyson
HF: Jason Winderlich, Scott Lucas, David Zaharakis
F: Patrick Ryder, Matthew Lloyd, Alwyn Davey
Foll: David Hille, Jobe Watson, Andrew Lovett

I/C (from): Leroy Jetta, Mark McVeigh, Sam Lonergan, Nathan Lovett-Murray, Jay Nash, Michael Quinn, Hayden Skipworth

In: McVeigh, McPhee, Lonergan, Quinn, Lovett-Murray
Out: David Myers, Heath Hocking(foot)

AFL Fantasy Watch: Zaharakis is named, and is still cheap. Myers was played out of position last round, and is now out of the team, he probably bounces back but it could be safer for a fantasy team to replace him now. Skipworth on the possible bench may be a problem for fantasy coaches, McVeigh and Lonergan probably play if they are healthy and Hocking has been good too.

Adelaide v Geelong - Round 4 Teams

Adelaide

B: Graham Johncock, Ben Rutten, Andy Otten
HB: Jared Petrenko, Nathan Bock, Andrew McLeod
C: Michael Doughty, Scott Thompson, David Mackay
HF: Brent Reilly, Taylor Walker, Nathan van Berlo
F: Jason Porplyzia, Kurt Tippett, Bernie Vince
Foll: Ivan Maric, Simon Goodwin, Tyson Edwards
I/C: Robert Shirley, Brad Symes, Richard Douglas, Patrick Dangerfield

Emg: Brad Moran, Jonathon Griffin, Jarrhan Jacky

In: Bock, Shirley
Out: Nick Gill (hamstring), Scott Stevens (concussion)

AFL Fantasy Watch: Dangerfield, Otten and Petrenko will continue to make money. Taylor Walker had his best game of his career last round, but it may not be a good idea to start him this week.

Geelong

B: Andrew Mackie, Matthew Scarlett, Darren Milburn
HB: Joel Corey, Harry Taylor, Max Rooke
C: Jimmy Bartel, Corey Enright, Cameron Ling
HF: James Kelly, Cameron Mooney, Mathew Stokes
F: Paul Chapman, Tom Hawkins, Steve Johnson
Foll: Mark Blake, Joel Selwood, Gary Ablett
I/C: Shane Mumford, Travis Varcoe, David Wojcinski, Shannon Byrnes

Emg: Tom Lonergan, Ryan Gamble, David Johnson

In: Mumford
Out: Trent West

AFL Fantasy Watch: West out and Mumford in, probably not important for 99% of the fantasy coaches.

Brisbane v Collingwood - Round 4 Teams

Brisbane

B: Ashley McGrath, Daniel Merrett, Joel Patfull
HB: Luke Power, Joel Macdonald, Josh Drummond
C: Bradd Dalziell, Simon Black, Daniel Rich
HF: Michael Rischitelli, Jonathan Brown, Justin Sherman
F: Tim Notting, Daniel Bradshaw, Mitch Clark
Foll: Jamie Charman, Travis Johnstone, Jed Adcock
I/C: Jared Brennan, Cheynee Stiller, Jason Roe, Troy Selwood

Emg: James Polkinghorne, Tom Collier, Albert Proud

In: Jamie Charman, Jared Brennan
Out: Matthew Leuenberger (knee), Albert Proud

AFL Fantasy Watch: Leuenberger will need to be traded out, Charman is a logical player to grab but he may be cheaper next week. Brennan plays, he could be used in any position by Brisbane, and fantasy coaches may want to wait a couple of games to see what his stats are. Most have Rich, and while his price has jumped he could still be traded for.

Collingwood

B: Shannon Cox, Simon Prestigiacomo, Tyson Goldsack
HB: Harry O’Brien, Nathan Brown, Martin Clarke
C: Shane O’Bree, Alan Didak, Dale Thomas
HF: Dayne Beams, Travis Cloke, Paul Medhurst
F: John Anthony, Leigh Brown, Anthony Rocca
Foll: Josh Fraser, Tarkyn Lockyer, Scott Pendlebury
I/C: Leon Davis, Jaxson Barham, Dane Swan, Alan Toovey

Emg: Anthony Corrie, Brad Dick, Danny Stanley

In: Barham, Goldsack, Rocca, Toovey
Out: Brad Dick, Ben Johnson (leg), Nick Maxwell (susp), Heath Shaw (susp)

AFL Fantasy Watch: Sidebottom didn't make it but cheap fantasy player Barham did. Beams is cheap for another day, and will be a popular trade this week.

Hawthorn v Port Adelaide - Round 4 Teams

Hawthorn

B: Brent Guerra, Thomas Murphy, Brendan Whitecross
HB: Stuart Dew, Robert Campbell, Luke Hodge
C: Clinton Young, Sam Mitchell, Chance Bateman
HF: Cyril Rioli, Lance Franklin, Cameron Stokes
F: Campbell Brown, Jarryd Roughead, Mark Williams
Foll: Simon Taylor, Brad Sewell, Travis Tuck
I/C: Brent Renouf, Jordan Lewis, Jarryd Morton, Garry Moss

Emg: Beau Dowler, Ryan Schoenmakers, Matt Sucking

In: Campbell, Lewis, Sewell, Taylor
Out: Grant Birchall (thumb), Xavier Ellis (foot), Stephen Gilham (knee), Ryan Schoenmakers

AFL Fantasy Watch: A lot of injuries there, but that is helping Whitecross and Moss make some money. Tuck probably starts going up in value after he plays this game. Hodge is cheaper to sign, and will continue to drop in value for a few more weeks.

Port Adelaide

B: Michael Pettigrew, Alipate Carlile, Jacob Surjan
HB: Nathan Krakouer, Troy Chaplin, Matt Thomas
C: Shaun Burgoyne, Chad Cornes, Steven Salopek
HF: Robert Gray, Warren Tredrea, Hamish Hartlett
F: Brett Ebert, Brendon Lade, Daniel Motlop
Foll: Dean Brogan, Kane Cornes, Danyle Pearce
I/C: Travis Boak, Josh Carr, Tom Logan, Wade Thompson

Emg: Jason Davenport, David Rodan, Toby Thurstans

In: Hartlett, Logan
Out: Peter Burgoyne (susp), Domenic Cassisi (susp)

AFL Fantasy Watch: Power fans are happy H Hartlett is there for his debut, but fantasy coaches probably want him to wait a bit longer for him to play his third game, as Hartlett would be someone to bring in when Robinson or Dangerfield peak in value. Davenport is closer to a game, named as an emergency. Thompson is in for another game, his second of the season.

AFL Fantasy News: Anthony Rocca

Rocca n Roll: The return of Rocca will mean many different scenarios in fantasy AFL, for Collingwood and maybe Brisbane.

Rocca is cheaper than usual, so there is a chance he is undervalued if he is kicking a few goals. So see what he does for his first two games. Cloke may even be helped by Rocca playing, Cloke's marks could be more plentiful although if he plays away from goal it could limit that stat. J Anthony will still find the ball for a few kicks at goal, and most of his kicks will go through for goals, but he is unlikely to do what he did in some of the preseason games. There won't be a need for L Brown up forward, so maybe the Magpies will instead go back to Wood or Bryan as the backup to Fraser, although L Brown could also be used in the back line.

The Lions are without Leuenberger, so Clark will have to spend more time in the ruck, and not in the back line. This could help Roe keep his spot, but may mean Drummond has to play a more accountable role, or something that may be of help to fantasy teams is that Henderson or Collier may play.

Source: Collingwood site
Rocca ready to return

Collingwood midfielder Shane O’Bree, who will play his 200th match for the Magpies after starting his career with the Lions, said Rocca was a certain starter and believes the forward will be able to have an impact on Friday night.

Also included in the 24-man travelling party to Brisbane to replace the injured Ben Johnson and the suspended Nick Maxwell and Heath Shaw, were Anthony Corrie, Tyson Goldsack, Jaxson Barham and Alan Toovey.

Fantasy AFL Investment Report

To the right you will see the Fantasy AFL Investment Report, an expanded version of the Sign Or Sell.

You can follow some of the players who are making fantasy teams a lot of money, and when they may have hit their top value they will be named in the Investment Peaked section. Maybe you trade them out then, or maybe they are playing too well and you keep them.

Plenty of big-name players are losing some value, most will bounce back over the year. But just like Bartel in 2008, the fantasy teams that don’t have these stars can wait until the price hits bottom and steal a star at a bargain price. When the players have reached what could be their lowest price, they will be named in the Bargain Price part.

The Bargain Price section currently has players who have played two games and could start making money when they play a third.

A lot of other players could be listed in the report, so if you want someone added just leave a comment here or for any other post.

AFL Fantasy News: Roger Hayden

They need him back: Hayden is not only a consistent fantasy points producer, but his return could add some stability to the Fremantle back line and help some of the other Dockers get more stats with greater efficiency.

Source: The West Australian
Harvey's ruck battle continues

The Dockers will bring back Roger Hayden from a hamstring injury to take on St Kilda at Etihad Stadium this week.

Subiaco recruit Greg Broughton is likely to miss one week with an ankle injury after gathering an impressive 19 disposals on debut in the backline against the Crows.

AFL Fantasy News: David Wirrpanda

Coasting: While Wirrpanda always deserves a spot in the side, maybe the Eagles as they are rebuilding will eventually decide that Fletcher is taking away minutes from their younger onballers. With Fletcher still in the side, it is limiting the minutes of Ebert and Masten, and keeping other young players out of the team. So it isn’t the time to sign Fletcher.

Source: West Coast site
Eagles spots on the line

Worsfold said veteran Chad Fletcher was ahead of a number of his teammates form wise, while young players Chris Masten and Brad Ebert were likely to get the chance to rebound against the Bulldogs.

David Wirrpanda is the only definite inclusion at this point.

AFL Fantasy Tactics: Price Droppers After Round 3

Some of these players are hurt, some are hurting fantasy teams and should be sent out, others will bounce back for their teams soon or could become bargain buys for other fantasy teams.

Here are the top 15, or maybe that is the bottom 15, for players who have not been super so far in SuperCoach.

(NTH) 1. HALE, David
$360,400 $-78,700
Getting hurt early in a game and not being able to return will mean a big fantasy value decrease that will continue for several more weeks. He is a key forward now, most of the time, so while he has started out with a famine for fantasy points there is always the chance he gets a feast or two soon.

(NTH) 2. HARVEY, Brent
$527,800 $-77,600
Other teams are finding ways to control him, Harvey and the Kangaroos should be able to get things going again soon.

(MEL) 3. JOHNSON, Paul
$330,400 $-68,000
No Jeff White, not even Mark Jamar, and Johnson isn't bringing in stats. He gets a chance this week to play against a ruckman his size, maybe that will help his stats.

(WBD) 4. COONEY, Adam
$511,100 $-64,500
The Brownlow curse, a sore knee, other Bulldogs like Higgins and Addison playing a bigger role, his price will continue to slide for a few more games which will make him a bargain and someone to sign when he is fitter.

(STK) 5. RIEWOLDT, Nick
$552,800 $-60,900
A temporary price reduction, especially if the Dockers put Tarrant on him next game.

(RIC) 6. BOWDEN, Joel
$524,500 $-60,800
The player on this list that could be the biggest concern, there are a lot of people who don't wear yellow and black that want Melbourne to win just so they can see what happens at Richmond, and if Richmond lose then a veteran like Bowden could again be someone who gets the blame and that can lead to the VFL.

(HAW) 7. HODGE, Luke
$575,300 $-60,000
Those who have Hodge think this is just a temporary drop in value, those who don't have Hodge are figuring out what round will be the time to sign him cheap.

(WCE) 8. EMBLEY, Andrew
$440,300 $-51,700
Not at his best at the moment, but in a few more weeks could be a bargain that everyone wants.

(PTA) 9. LADE, Brendon
$357,100 $-48,300
Maybe he is old, or maybe Brogan really is as good as he was during the latter parts of season 2008.

(SYD) 10. O'KEEFE, Ryan
$513,200 $-47,200
He did want out, but couldn’t get out, but then had a great preseason for the Swans. You wouldn’t want to give up on him and trade him out yet.

(SYD) 11. HALL, Barry
$425,700 $-46,400
Getting back to the SCG should help his game, and his fantasy coaches will also be happy that he hasn't been reported for hitting anyone.

(PTA) 12. BURGOYNE, Shaun
$511,800 $-43,800
Needs to kick a few more goals for extra fantasy points, his fantasy coaches shouldn’t worry about a drop in price.

(NTH) 13. WELLS, Daniel
$444,000 $-43,500
Laidley, he has a few of his players on this list. Fantasy coaches who are patient with Wells will probably get some big scores, but now there is news he is a bit hurt his scores could be low for a few more games.

(GEE) 14. MACKIE, Andrew
$425,600 $-43,400
Missing a few more targets with his kicks than normal, and spent a bit of time against key forwards with the Cats down a few tall defenders, but his stats should get back to where they usually are soon.

(SYD) 15. MATTNER, Martin
$485,400 $-42,700
Had a price increase last year, so losing a bit of value this year was always a possibility.

AFL Fantasy News: Tom Harley

Captain Cat not far away: The Cats can win most of their games without Harley, but it does mean some of their other players have to be more defensive which can hurt their stats. When Harley is back, maybe Kelly or Corey are not needed in the back line, Mackie won't need to be used on key position forwards and Scarlett can run off the full forward more.

Source: The Geelong Advertiser
Cameron Ling OK to tackle Crows, says Geelong football manager Neil Balme

Meanwhile, Cats skipper Tom Harley is still one to two weeks away from returning from injury with fellow knee-victim Brad Ottens described as a one to three-week proposition.

However he suggested Harley could need to return through the VFL after a limited pre-season.

AFL Fantasy News: Matthew Leuenberger

Bad injury: Leuenberger helped his fantasy price as he did play on after injuring his knee, but will need to be traded as he is going to miss a lot of games. Charman does make some sense as a trade, if you have some extra money to spend, although he could lose value in the next couple of weeks.

Two trades may be needed if Leuenberger is a starting ruckman. You trade out a higher-priced player who is a midfielder, defender or forward and bring in a cheaper player doing more than their fantasy price. The extra money is used to trade out Leuenberger for a more expensive ruckman.

Source: AFL site
Ruck blow for Lions' Leuenberger

BRISBANE Lions ruckman Matthew Leuenberger will miss at least 12 weeks after an arthroscope performed on Tuesday revealed damage to the lateral meniscus in his left knee.

He was taken with pick four in the 2006 draft and had been preferred to teammate Jamie Charman as the Lions number one rucking option this season, averaging 17 hit-outs and nine disposals in the first three rounds.

AFL Fantasy News: Jarrad Grant

Closer to playing first AFL game: The Bulldogs are playing a lot of smalls, and Will Minson, up forward so there is a spot for a player with more height and Grant could debut soon.

Source: AFL site
Learning curve still steep for Grant

Grant, 19, has kicked nine goals over the past two weeks in Williamstown's practice match wins over North Ballarat and the AIS-AFL Academy.

"He hasn't been on our emergency list as yet, but hopefully he gets a run with Williamstown seniors and shows some form from there."

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

AFL Fantasy News: Heath Shaw

Suspensions: Heath Shaw and Domenic Cassisi will have to sit on fantasy benches for the next round, while Nick Maxwell and P Burgoyne will be out for two weeks. The Magpies will have a number of players added to the side for their next game, Ben Johnson is out injured too, so maybe Rocca plays and Sidebottom could also be a chance.

Source: AFL site
Shaw out for one

Shaw’s guilty plea reduced the penalty by 25 per cent and his five year good record reduced it by a further 25 per cent resulting in 126.56 demerit points and a one match sanction.

Source: AFL site
Maxwell accepts

Domenic Cassisi, Port Adelaide, has accepted a one-match sanction for striking Melbourne's Lynden Dunn;

Peter Burgoyne, Port Adelaide, has accepted a two-match sanction for kneeing Demon Aaron Davey.

Malfunction, Need Input: What Players Were Missed?

During preseason, many lists and guesses and rankings and projections were posted and a lot of them look like they will happen. But, as is always the case, a few players were under the radar and now performing over expectations.

Click on "comments" and just leave a name or two, hopefully not many more, of the players who didn't get a mention on the site before the season started but are getting stats now.

There is the Triple-H of Harding, Hocking and Hadley who received zero hype here. It seemed right at the time, as Harding had made a lot of money the previous season and didn't look like having more upside, Hocking was at a team with many players pushing for a spot in the side and his spot wasn't yet secure, and Hadley was an oft-injured player trying to get a game in one of the most talented AFL midfields. They have all been great in the first three games.

Some of Melbourne's young players were underestimated, Whitecross wasn't talked about at all, Gilbert's great start to the season wasn't expected, there are plenty of others.

AFL Fantasy News: Jesse White

Going forward: J White hasn't been overwhelmed lately in the ruck contests, although that may have been helped by going against M Clark and M Thorp in the last two games, but he is more of a tall forward and he may get a chance to show that if the Swans add another ruckman to their side. If Pyke does play, maybe White's numbers won't change if he can kick a goal and take a few marks, although if Jolly gets a few extra minutes of rest it could stop him bringing in the huge numbers he has been getting, not that Jolly won’t still be one of the best fantasy ruckmen.

Source: The Age
Pyke's getting closer to goal of the season

Sydney coach Paul Roos confirmed yesterday that Pyke, who has continued to improve in the reserves, could be in the side to meet Carlton on Saturday at the SCG. While Pyke would be used exclusively in the ruck, that would give the Swans the luxury of moving one of their other ruckmen - either Darren Jolly or, more likely, Jesse White - into the forward line, a move which proved successful late in their loss to Brisbane last weekend.

Roos has not spoken with Crouch yet but said: "I suspect he won't play for a while because of his history with soft-tissue injuries.

AFL Fantasy News: Grant Birchall

More injured Hawks: Guerra is producing fantasy points, but a lot of the other Hawthorn defenders will be missing next round.

Source: The Age
Hawthorn's win comes at a cost with three players sidelined

Scans yesterday revealed that Grant Birchall needs surgery to mend a thumb he fractured against North Melbourne on Sunday. The 21-year-old, who finished eighth in the club championship last year, is likely to miss four matches after having a pin inserted later this week.

Xavier Ellis, among the Hawks' best players in last year's grand final, has an unusual foot injury that will force him out for one match at the least, while Travis Tuck is understood to have a hip flexor problem.

AFL Fantasy News: Adam Cooney

Out a week: Cooney will need to sit on fantasy benches this week.

Source: Herald Sun
Western Bulldog Adam Cooney to go under knife

Cooney will definitely miss Sunday's clash with West Coast at Subiaco Oval, but the Western Bulldogs hope the midfield star will return for Round 5 against Carlton.

The Dogs are faced with a six-day break heading into the Perth assignment and did not want to risk Cooney on a long trip. It is a boost for the Eagles given Cooney often plays well on the wide Subiaco Oval and had an impact against the Dockers in Round 1 coming off limited preparation.

AFL Contract News: Zach Clarke

Bigger deal: Hopefully the Dockers don't rush him into the side, as doing that may have caused the injury problems with J Longmuir and R Warnock, as Clarke should eventually become a solid player after developing his body and skills for a few years. He was an emergency this week so maybe he does debut soon, the Dockers are also thinking long-term as another year has been added to his contract.

Source: The West Australian
Clarke signs for extra year with Dockers

Frematle youngster Zach Clarke has agreed to terms through to the end of 2011.

Along with Stephen Hill and Nic Suban, Clarke is the third draftee from the 2008 National Draft to commit to Fremantle for three years.

Fantasy Player Of The Week - Round 3

Paul Chapman

He had the ball a lot against Collingwood, and he usually kicked it and that meant more fantasy points than handballing, as well as a few goals too. His hamstrings were a problem for fantasy coaches last year, but Chapman is in perfect health now and is performing better than most of the other high-priced fantasy forwards.

Bargain Performer Of The Week

Patrick Dangerfield

He seemed to have a strange preseason, not really part of the side all the time, but now the real games have started he has been in every week and is playing well. Maybe it was because is was against the Dockers, or that he may not have had an opponent for a lot of the game, but Dangerfield looked like a superstar in round 3.

AFL 2009 Round 3: Bulldogs 110 - Tigers 63

Western

Jason Akermanis - 23 possessions, 8 marks, 4 goals
His last year but still capable of big fantasy scores.

Lindsay Gilbee - 21 kicks, 1 goal
One of the best fantasy defenders so far this season.

Shaun Higgins - 24 possessions, 2 goals
Expect a big jump in value now.

Josh Hill - 17 possessions, 8 marks, 1 goal
Played a great game.

Brian Lake - 17 possessions, 9 marks
Another big game, and playing against Richardson for some of the game allowed him to cover more ground than usual.

Richmond

Luke McGuane - 21 possessions, 12 marks
Playing against a smaller team, he joined in the running and stats for a change.

Alex Rance - 19 possessions, 7 marks, 3 tackles
Might be someone to add next week, his first couple of games have been very good for fantasy points.

Matthew Richardson - 17 kicks, 12 marks
More than worth his price.

Shane Tuck - 33 possessions, 9 marks, 1 goal
Wasn't great in the first couple of rounds but this game got him back on track.

Matt White - 21 possessions, 4 frees for, 2 goals
A lot of his teammates are struggling, while White has solidified his spot in the side.

AFL Fantasy News: Tom Gillies

A needed tall: Egan and Brown won't play this year, Harley is out a few more weeks, maybe Gillies does play for Geelong in the AFL if they are up against a side with a lot of tall forwards.

Source: The Geelong Advertiser
Tom Gillies getting close to Geelong Cats seniors

EXCITING first-year defender Tom Gillies has taken a major step forward in the eyes of VFL coach Dale Amos as he closes in on his AFL debut.

Gillies, taken with pick 33 in the 2008 national draft, starred in the VFL in his first match against hard-bodied AFL players on an afternoon where dumped forward Ryan Gamble also delivered a timely reminder to Cats selectors with four goals.

AFL Fantasy News: Matthew Leuenberger

Knee scans: The Lions don't know how badly Leuenberger's knee is injured but he is expected to miss games. Charman will return to the Brisbane side, and Brennan is ready to play too.

Source: Brisbane site
Scans for Leuenberger

"They think it might be the lateral meniscus," Lions coach Michael Voss told Melbourne radio station Triple M on Sunday.

"The best case scenario is he's just pinched it. I guess the worst case scenario is that he's torn it badly and they'll have to repair it so it might be three months. We're sort of hoping that it only just needs a little clean up which will be about four weeks.

Source: Brisbane site
Lions easily account for Aspley

Charman was energetic and aggressive and particularly effective in the first and final terms, although young rivals David Hill and Dylan Reid never took a backward step.

Charman and Brennan looked ready to a senior recall if it comes, while the busy Scott Harding and Polkinghorne also appeared primed if required.

Injury update

Ben Johnson (Collingwood) leg Broken fibula will keep him out for six weeks.

Xavier Ellis (Hawthorn) ankle Will miss a few weeks due to an ankle fracture and ligament damage.

AFL 2009 Round 3: Crows 104 - Dockers 80

Adelaide

Patrick Dangerfield - 20 possessions, 1 goal
Did a lot of good things in this game, should continue to keep his spot in the Adelaide side.

Jason Porplyzia - 4 goals, 12 possessions
Very accurate in front of goal in this game.

Brad Symes - 19 possessions, 7 tackles
Always good for stats, and even had 4 hitouts here.

Nathan van Berlo - 22 possessions, 4 tackles, 1 goal
Another good game from van Berlo.

Taylor Walker - 3 goals, 3 behinds, 10 kicks, 8 marks
Maybe a breakthrough game for Walker, Hentschel wasn't there and Stevens missed the second half so Walker had the forward line space.

Fremantle

Greg Broughton - 15 handballs, 4 kicks
A very good debut and plenty of fantasy points at a low rookie price.

Paul Hasleby - 28 possessions
Played the way he did before he missed last season with injury.

Stephen Hill - 15 possessions, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal
Improved as the game progressed.

Michael Johnson - 21 kicks, 9 marks
He can do this a lot, depending on how Fremantle use him.

Matthew Pavlich - 13 kicks, 3 goals
Fremantle are losing and Pavlich is playing everywhere, they must decide to keep him at full forward soon, his value will drop now but he can turn things around.

AFL 2009 Round 3: Hawks 123 - Kangaroos 69

Hawthorn

Stuart Dew - 3 goals, 24 possessions, 7 marks
Still kicking long and getting fantasy points.

Luke Hodge - 27 possessions
Getting more of the ball.

Sam Mitchell - 37 possessions, 4 tackles, 4 frees for, 1 goal
A big jump in stats compared to his first two games, which were against tough Geelong and Sydney.

Jarryd Morton - 28 possessions, 2 goals
A few more games like this will get him a spot in the side every week.

Brendan Whitecross - 29 possessions, 10 marks
A great game for fantasy points compared to his price.

North Melbourne

Michael Firrito - 20 possessions, 9 marks, 1 goal
A lot of time in the middle and more stats than he usually gets.

Brent Harvey - 23 possessions
No goals, 1 tackle and only 2 marks, his price is going to go down and he needs to do more for fantasy teams.

Brady Rawlings - 35 possessions, 5 tackles
A big game for someone who sometimes gets low stats when tagging.

Andrew Swallow - 24 possessions, 9 tackles
Certainly one of the bargains of the fantasy season so far.

Jack Ziebell - 17 possessions
Has to be, along with Rich, one of the safest first-year fantasy players for teams to have as the Kangaroos can't drop him.

AFL 2009 Round 3: Power 147 - Demons 90

Port Adelaide

Travis Boak - 30 possessions, 1 goal
Boak, P Burgoyne, N Krakouer and S Salopek all had 30 or more possessions.

Chad Cornes - 29 possessions, 9 marks, 2 goals
Same number of possessions as Kane had.

Robbie Gray - 2 goals, 19 possessions, 7 marks, 3 tackles, 2 frees for
Very active and involved in this game.

Wade Thompson - 9 possessions
No need to sign him after his first game, wait and see what happens when he plays again.

Warren Tredrea - 6 goals, 10 kicks, 9 marks
He played very well, but also remember who the opposition was.

Melbourne

Aaron Davey - 25 kicks, 5 handballs
Plenty of possessions in the midfield.

Lynden Dunn - 12 possessions
Into the side as McDonald didn't play.

Paul Johnson - 6 possessions, 10 hitouts, 4 frees against
Struggled in this game, Meesen had 8 possessions and 22 hitouts as Melbourne tried a new ruck duo.

Cale Morton - 28 possessions, 9 marks, 1 goal
A good game for stats.

Jared Rivers - 17 possessions, 6 marks
Was used as a loose defender for some of the game.

AFL 2009 Round 3: Bombers 116 - Blues 112

Essendon

Courtenay Dempsey - 21 possessions, 7 marks, 2 goals
Those who thought he was a bargain got a big reward in this game.

Matthew Lloyd - 10 kicks, 10 marks, 5 goals
Will lose money, but when he is more affordable he can be signed after showing here that he can still kick goals.

Jay Nash - 18 possessions
Into the team with Quinn ill, Essendon seem to have a lot of players that could be in contention for the last few spots in the side every week.

Hayden Skipworth - 16 possessions, 7 marks, 1 goal
Will go up in value now, and fantasy coaches will have to decide when to sell, it could be a couple of months or maybe sooner.

David Zaharakis - 12 possessions, 6 marks, 3 tackles
Will stay at his opening price until he plays another game, he and Beams of Collingwood will be fantasy onballers signed this week.

Carlton

Paul Bower - 20 possessions, 7 marks
A tall and mobile defender, he can be underrated for stats.

Brendan Fevola - 13 kicks, 10 marks, 4 goals, 7 behinds
Can kick a lot of goals against the Bombers, but this time kicked a lot of behinds.

Shaun Grigg - 17 possessions, 1 goal
He is at a good price, and it won't change yet.

Mitch Robinson - 11 possessions, 6 tackles
Going up in value now, he is probably ahead of Joseph and Garlett to stay in the team.

Nick Stevens - 23 possessions
First game of the season and back with his usual stats.

AFL 2009 Round 3: Lions 100 - Swans 67

Brisbane

Josh Drummond - 20 kicks, 11 marks, 1 goal
He can do that a lot, so if he stays healthy he will again be one of the best fantasy defenders.

Matthew Leuenberger - 7 possessions, 17 hitouts
Had some knee soreness, if he does play next week they probably bring back Charman to help him and that will limit his playing time and possible stats.

Joel Patfull - 9 possessions, 3 marks, 4 tackles
Followed Goodes around, he helped Brisbane win but that cut down on his fantasy stats, particularly his marks.

Luke Power - 15 possessions
He and Black, 16 possessions, were quieter than they would normally be.

Daniel Rich - 17 possessions, 7 tackles, 3 frees for, 1 goal
Has probably shown enough to prove he is this year's Rhys Palmer for fantasy AFL games.

Sydney

Ed Barlow - 17 possessions, 1 goal
A late addition to the side again, and showed the fantasy ability he has.

Darren Jolly - 46 hitouts, 11 possessions, 8 tackles, 3 frees for, 1 goal
A great game last week, just as good this round.

Nick Malceski - 15 kicks, 5 tackles
Doing more than his price and showing there is nothing wrong with his knee.

Brett Meredith - 9 possessions, 3 tackles, 1 goal
Not getting a lot of notice right now but is a player for fantasy coaches to watch.

Lewis Roberts-Thomson - 7 possessions, 4 frees against
It was never going to be easy for him and C Bolton, 7 kicks, against the big Brisbane forwards.

AFL 2009 Round 3: Saints 161 - Eagles 64

St Kilda

Steven Baker - 9 possessions, 3 tackles
He was never going to be great for stats but was worth a look at due to his price, if you have him you will want to upgrade him in the coming weeks, but that was probably the plan all along.

Zac Dawson - 9 possessions, 7 marks, 1 goal
If he is your 9th fantasy defender you are getting value for the little money he cost, he may even keep his spot a bit longer but they will get Hudghton and maybe Maguire back soon.

Jarryn Geary - 15 possessions, 7 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal
A cheap fantasy defender, with Raines, Hurley and Grimes injured it means Geary is one of the best around his price, a price that will start to rise.

Farren Ray - 23 possessions
Another Saint who was a question mark entering the season, his time at the Bulldogs wasn't great for fantasy AFL but so far at the Saints he has been very consistent, his price will also go up next week.

Nick Riewoldt - 26 possessions, 9 marks
Increased his numbers, but his price will drop, not that it will be a problem for those who have him on their teams.

West Coast

Mitch Brown - 16 possessions, 8 marks
The West Coast back line was under siege, Brown managed to get some useful stats in the game and is one of the best cheap fantasy forwards for a bench to have at the moment.

Adam Hunter - 3 kicks, 2 goals
Was always at his best when used as a defender, who then went forward to kick goals if needed, he started up forward here and the ball wasn't there very often.

Daniel Kerr - 19 handballs, 8 kicks, 4 tackles, 4 frees for
Kerr and his St Kilda opponent, Clinton Jones with 14 tackles and 25 possessions, were both among the fantasy points.

Eric MacKenzie - 17 possessions, 7 marks
Getting more of the ball than he did last season.

Matt Priddis - 30 possessions, 10 tackles, 3 frees for
The Eagles didn't have a great day but at least Priddis brought in the numbers for his fantasy owners.

AFL Fantasy News: Cameron Ling

Surfing, not hobbling: The Cats have plenty of time to rest and prepare for their next game, and Ling will be ready to go despite hurting his ankle.

Source: The Geelong Advertiser
Cameron Ling says his ankle will be fine before Geelong Cats tackles Adelaide next weekend

IT took something as simple as standing up on a surfboard to prove Geelong star Cameron Ling's ankle injury isn't as bad as first feared.

Ling joined teammate David Wojcinski for a surf at Jan Juc yesterday and said the ankle he hurt in Thursday night's win over Collingwood had responded quickly to treatment and he was confident of being fit for the Cats' clash with Adelaide at AAMI Stadium next Saturday night.

AFL Fantasy News: Wade Thompson

Commentators happy that Adam Thomson was traded: Wade Thompson, a cheap fantasy forward is player for the Power and so is Matt Thomas, if Thomson was still around it could get confusing. A Maric is close to a game with Melbourne, named as an emergency.

Corey Jones is back but Harris isn't, there may be players that miss due to their Kangaroos Fried Chicken show so Harris could play. Goldstein is out, so McIntosh could have a big game against Hawthorn. Tuck is back, plenty of fantasy points here and he will be a player to trade for next week.

Hill and Suban are still in the Fremantle side, Broughton who performed well in preseason gets to play his first game, he is at the low rookie price in fantasy AFL. Stevens and Symes are back for Adelaide, they know how to bring in stats.

AFL 2009 Round 3: Cats 122 - Magpies 95

Geelong

Gary Ablett - 37 possessions, 7 marks, 5 tackles, 1 goal
His fantasy coaches have little to complain about, is doing more than his huge price .

Paul Chapman - 24 kicks, 11 handballs, 4 goals
He was at the top of his game here, one of the best fantasy forwards.

Tom Hawkins - 6 kicks, 6 marks, 2 goals
Don't sign him yet, but there were some good signs in this game and his kicking for goal was more accurate.

James Kelly - 22 possessions, 7 marks
Used a bit in the back line, didn't really hurt his stats.

Travis Varcoe - 16 possessions, 2 goals
One of his best games, for how he played, and he and Byrnes, 19 possessions, may keep Hogan out of the side for a few games.

Collingwood

Dayne Beams - 21 possessions, 9 marks, 1 goal
Played 2 games and someone to sign next week, the Cats didn't pay any attention to him and Beams kept getting the ball.

Leigh Brown - 12 possessions, 1 goal
As the backup ruckman he only had 1 hitout, but he could still keep Wood and Bryan out of the side.

Shannon Cox - 22 possessions, 1 goal
A few mistakes but a lot of the ball.

Shane O'Bree - 11 tackles, 14 possessions
Tackling that much gives him the equivalent fantasy points of someone with over 20 possessions for the game.

Heath Shaw - 6 kicks, 10 handballs
Not good news for fantasy teams, is far from his best stats and also reported.

All Footy SuperCoach Team 2009 - Round 3

Trading is what makes fantasy sports fun, although winning is also important, and just before round 3 of the AFL season is when trades should be made. But just loading up on fantasy bargains wasn't the reason here, it was also to get a team on the field.

Hurn replaced Raines. Last year Hurn was in the fantasy team and was traded out early in the season, this time he is traded in early in the season. With Raines out a few more games with his knee, Hurley injured too, Hurn adds a healthy body and will be going up in price next week too. Hill and Suban are still in the side, one is starting and the other is the emergency. Anthony is gone and the investment of Robinson has been added.

In round 1, the ruckmen here starred. In round 2, Ottens went from being the best round 1 SuperCoach player to being injured very early in the game. J White won't have the numbers that he did against a depleted Hawthorn team, but he will start now with Ottens out for a few weeks.

Dale Thomas is an easy player to spot, so when his spiky-hair was absent before the Collingwood game it did create a concern. But Ziebell was a good emergency for the round, and Thomas was back for round 3 after missing round 2 with illness. J Brown getting reported wasn't the best news, but he didn't get in trouble after it was looked at again.

The captain of the SuperCoach team this week is the same player that has been used as the captain for the first two rounds of the Dream Team and for Fox Sports Fantasy AFL, Chad Cornes. The idea is that Melbourne allow a lot of stats, so C Cornes is the SuperCoach captain this week.
