AFL Fantasy News: Dean Brogan

Big and angry: Brogan being suspended won't be important news for most fantasy coaches, although his one week absence may show what Port Adelaide are thinking and this could be valuable if one of their veteran ruckmen misses an extended amount of time during the season.

Maybe fantasy coaches will find out who the Power consider to be their number 3 ruckman. It won't be Trengove, he is injured. Port Adelaide could start up the J Giles band, or Lobbe could lob into the position. Redden would be unlikely, as he is very young. They may not play any of them, and just give Lade a bunch of minutes and then put in J Westhoff for a little bit if Lade needs a rest.

Port Adelaide's Dean Brogan wins, but loses

PORT Adelaide's Dean Brogan has been suspended for one game by the AFL tribunal after losing his challenge against a rough conduct charge.

Brogan will miss Sunday's game against West Coast.

AFL Fantasy News: Daniel Rich

Rising star: Rich is on 103,725 SuperCoach teams and 76,785 Dream Teams, and might be someone that other fantasy coaches who don't have him will trade for in the next week or two.

While Joel Selwood was even sent to the VFL in his debut year, so it happens to many new players, there may not be a valid reason for Coach Voss to send Rich to the Queensland competition during the year. That should make him a very safe fantasy player. Rich is physically ready, his left foot is already more skilled than many of his teammates, and he proved that in round 1 as he led his team in goal assists.

Source: Fox Sports
Brisbane Lions Daniel Rich named first AFL Rising Star nominee

Rich made an instant impact in the Lions' midfield, gathering 21 disposals and four tackles.

Highly touted as a top-three prospect leading into the 2008 AFL Draft, the Lions were surprised to get Rich with their first selection at pick seven.

Gold Coast Will Provide Surprise Fantasy Superstars

Something to remember in a few years when they start to play, the new Gold Coast team will take fringe players from other AFL clubs and give them huge minutes as they play every game. So load up on expansion players in 2011, it has worked for fantasy teams in other sports that have had expansion and it will happen in AFL fantasy.

One thing that may change AFL fantasy in a couple of years, an odd number of teams will make things difficult for fantasy games.

From Fox Sports
Gold Coast granted provisional licence by AFL Commission

The licence for the GCFC to become the 17th team in the competition from 2011 was granted on Tuesday, conditional on funding commitments with the AFL being finalised.

Do You Have Higgins And Skipworth ?

Leave a comment to say if you picked both Shaun Higgins and Hayden Skipworth, who are probably two of the biggest fantasy bargains and really performed in round 1.

Don’t bother about your name, anonymous is fine here, just click on "comments" below and put one of the options in the comment:

Both
Only Higgins
Only Skipworth
None

It isn’t too late to trade for them, see how they go next round, and then you can send out someone who is underperforming and add a bargain who will make money.

Kevin Sheedy in the Herald Sun says that only 40% of SuperCoaches have Higgins.

Sheedy also has Raines, and right now he is talking about trading him. It is a difficult choice, if you keep him on your bench you may suddenly hear he is going to be out longer, and if you trade him out he could return in a couple of weeks. Sheedy also mentions wanting to trade out Liam Anthony.

Sheedy scored 1998 fantasy points in round 1.

Gary Ablett gamble pays dividends

Player prices go up after three weeks, so I will wait a week while Carlton's Mitch Robinson, Melbourne's Kyle Cheney, and several mid-priced defenders are scrutinised.

Plenty of people have asked me why Kepler Bradley is my second ruckman. Put simply, the boy deserves a go. In my opinion, he has just needed time to find his feet.

AFL Fantasy News: Brendan Murphy

Another injured Swan: Murphy is a cheap rookie in fantasy AFL and was a chance to play AFL this season, that won't be happening for a while.

Sydney need height, marking and goals, so Lewis Johnston could debut soon.

Source: Fox Sports
Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos has limited options to face Hawks

"Murph (Brendan Murphy) got injured and might need a shoulder op, so there's another one gone down. It's frustrating because you want your young guys putting pressure on senior players, but at the moment through injuries it's not happening.

"Lewis Johnston played well on the weekend, he was our first-round draft, and Brett Meredith played well, and he's in his second year. We're certainly looking for young guys to step up and be picked, but with injuries at moment it's not possible."

AFL Fantasy News: Tom Hawkins

More firepower: The Cats can put up some huge scores when they play the Tigers, so Hawkins could have a big game if he plays in round 2. Fantasy coaches may want to wait until he plays another game, and shows that he will be a regular player for Geelong, before signing him.

Source: Herald Sun
Tiger's Tommy ache

Hawkins kicked five second-half goals in a VFL practice match against Bendigo at the weekend, and is being seriously considered to take on the Tigers at Skilled Stadium.

Geelong full-back Matthew Scarlett is certain to play despite suffering an ankle injury in Friday's win over Hawthorn.

AFL Fantasy News: Michael Hurley

Quality new players: Most fantasy coaches already have a bench full of quality investments, but here may be a few more to think about and this story lists some of them. If you are going to trade for them, it is better to wait another week, the price will still be the same.

Source: The Age
Round of the rookie

Robinson had a remarkable debut, booting three goals and performing with an appetite for the contest and an aggression at the ball that is seldom seen in first-year players.

The exquisite ball use of Brisbane's Daniel Rich, the class and speed of Fremantle midfielder Stephen Hill, and Bomber Michael Hurley's ability to trade weight with Warren Tredrea, marked a weekend of performances by players whose games provided influence, not just attendance.

Monday, March 30, 2009

AFL Fantasy News: Robert Murphy

Not as ready as expected: Murphy was named but didn't play, and it could be a few weeks before he plays his first game of the season. Not good news for those who signed him up.

Cooney was another Bulldog with a question mark over his fitness and round 1 availability. He did play, and while he was good for stats he only played just over half the possible minutes. That should mean his minutes will be increased now, and his stats should go up as well.

Source: AFL site
Bulldog Murphy could miss a month

Murphy, who underwent surgery on his patella tendon last October, was a late withdrawal from the Dogs' 63-point win over Fremantle in Perth.

Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade hopes Murphy will be ready to resume playing duties in a fortnight but said the 26-year-old may have to prove his fitness at VFL side Williamstown first before earning a senior recall.

AFL Fantasy Tactics: Brent Moloney Last Year, Tigers This Year

Many fantasy coaches signed a Tiger or two, and are wondering what to do now that Raines and Cousins are out. Brent Moloney, last season, started the year in a very similar way. Moloney had 22 possessions in round 1, but would then miss a month.

Brent Moloney was cheap last year and was signed to Dream Team and SuperCoach, but different tactics were used because of the different setups for the fantasy teams when Moloney was out.

In Dream Team, Rhys Palmer was sitting on the bench, so he started and Moloney sat on the bench. Moloney missed 4 weeks and when he returned he played well and made some money until getting injured in round 11 and missing the rest of the year.

What that means this year is if you have Cousins, and Rich or maybe Robinson on the bench, then you may not need to trade. For the back line, Raines may be able to sit if you have someone like S Hill, Hurley or Collier on your bench.

In SuperCoach last year, Palmer was traded out as the computers crashed prior to round 1 as Fremantle didn't name him to play in round 1 last season. So with Palmer not on the team, he was traded in for Moloney, the trade may have happened after round 2. Not only did it bring in a cheap player who would make a lot of money, but the price difference between Palmer and Moloney meant that Robert Murphy could be traded in too.

So this year, if you want to trade out Cousins then going for Rich, or another young onballer, could be the thing to do. Your team might not lose any stats in the trade, will get a younger and healthier player, will free up some money to use now and it will also mean making more money during the season. Trading out Raines is a bit riskier, but S Hill, Hurley, Collier, Spangher, Petterd and Suban could be cheap options.

If you can wait until next week to trade, it could help you make a better trade, or even help make the decision to not trade. The prices will still be the same next week, but there will be more information about return dates for the injured players and also another game to watch the possible players to be traded for.

Not that it has anything to do with the injured Tigers, but Brent Moloney is a bargain fantasy player again this year. He is also healthier than he has been during his time with Melbourne.

AFL Fantasy News: Simon Taylor

Likely to be suspended: A number of players important to fantasy teams were reported in round 1, but it looks like only Hawthorn ruckman Simon Taylor will be missing games.

Source: AFL site
Match review panel: round one

Simon Taylor, Hawthorn, has been charged with a Level Three misconduct (kneeing) offence against Joel Selwood, Geelong Cats, during the first quarter of the Round One match between Hawthorn and the Geelong Cats, played at the MCG on Friday March 27, 2009.

In summary, he can accept a two-match sanction with an early plea.

AFL Fantasy News: Simon Black

To play round 2: Several teams had players withdraw from their round 1 sides but they should be back in this week. Black is expected to be available for Brisbane, Gilham could be one of a number of Hawks ready to play, and maybe Robert Murphy will play for the Bulldogs.

It is important for fantasy coaches to remember that prices change after a player has played 3 games, so Black and others who have a delayed start to the year won’t rise, or drop, in price as soon as most of the other players will.

Source: Fox Sports
St Kilda expect Raphael Clarke and Nick Riewoldt to play in round two of AFL

But Lions football manager Graeme Allen said the Brownlow medallist would be "as good as gold" for Saturday night's match against Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

Stephen Gilham was a late withdrawal from Friday night's game, failing to overcome a knee injury sustained in the NAB Cup, but is expected to make the trip to Sydney this weekend.

All The SuperCoach Scores

A very useful page, every player from round 1 is listed here with their SuperCoach score.

Big forwards can have huge scores one week and few the next, so don't give up on Lloyd, Hall or N Riewoldt just because of one bad round.

There is also no need to rush and sign a player based on round 1, at least give them another week, and their price will still be the same. LRT, Hooper, Scott D Thompson, LeCras, they may find it tough to repeat their big scores next week.

From the Herald Sun:
SuperCoach scores – Round 1

Fantasy Player Of The Week - Round 1

Gary Ablett

He cost a lot, and was playing against the premiers, so it wasn't going to be easy for him to bring in all the stats required to justify his cost. But he did it, and next round there is a chance he does even more.

Bargain Performer Of The Week

Daniel Rich

His first AFL game, and probably the first of 22 games this season. Those who don't have him still have a couple of weeks to sign him up before his price starts to rise.

AFL 2009 Round 1: Bulldogs 157 - Dockers 94

Western

Lindsay Gilbee - 3 goals, 21 kicks, 12 handballs
The Dockers had him under control for a while, and then let him do what he wanted.

Mitch Hahn - 5 goals, 5 tackles, 12 possessions
Won't do that every week.

Shaun Higgins - 29 possessions, 7 marks, 2 goals
Everyone's bargain player did what was expected, and a lot more.

Brian Lake - 19 possessions, 10 marks
Very good fantasy stats, helped by the Dockers who didn't have a forward structure.

Tom Williams - 11 possessions, 6 marks
Robert Murphy didn't play, so Williams was added to the team.

Fremantle

Steven Dodd - 28 possessions
The Dockers said he could be a player to do more, and he did more.

Paul Duffield - 26 possessions
A lot of the ball but sometimes he didn't use it too well.

Stephen Hill - 9 possessions, 1 goal
His first game, like his team he started well but then did little.

Nick Suban - 9 possessions, 1 goal
His first game, an early error or two but then did some good things.

Chris Tarrant - 12 possessions
Some time at full back, so he wasn't in the space at half back getting stats.

AFL 2009 Round 1: Power 107 - Bombers 66

Port Adelaide

Peter Burgoyne - 32 possessions
Not only was he the better Burgoyne, but he had more than twice as many possessions as his brother.

Josh Carr - 9 kicks, 14 handballs, 1 goal
A good game at his new, old, club.

Chad Cornes - 20 possessions, 9 tackles
Kane had 9 more possessions.

Nathan Krakouer - 20 possessions
A low-cost fantasy forward playing around half back for his AFL club.

Danyle Pearce - 31 possessions
A big game, and he could start to produce them more consistently.

Essendon

Michael Hurley - 12 kicks, 5 marks, 4 tackles
The Bombers are asking him to take the kicking-in responsibilities, so they must think highly of is kicking.

Scott Lucas - 12 possessions, 8 marks, 1 goal
Did more than Lloyd, who had 3 kicks and 0 goals, and Lucas is a lot cheaper, both should play better next round.

Tayte Pears - 14 possessions
A late inclusion, Bellchambers didn't play, and Pears has an affordable fantasy price although the Bombers do have other players for his spot.

Hayden Skipworth - 15 kicks, 15 handballs, 12 marks, 3 frees for, 1 goal
Everybody probably has him on their fantasy teams, and right now everybody is happy.

Jobe Watson - 19 kicks, 12 handballs, 8 marks
Usually handballs a lot, so this kick to handball ratio means even more fantasy points.

AFL 2009 Round 1: Kangaroos 101 - Demons 67

North Melbourne

Michael Firrito - 1 goal, 11 possessions, 3 tackles
Like Maxwell yesterday, Firrito was played in the midfield instead of the back line.

Leigh Harding - 20 kicks, 8 handballs, 12 marks, 7 tackles, 4 frees for, 1 goal
That must be his best ever game for fantasy points.

Hamish McIntosh - 21 possessions, 21 hitouts, 3 goals, 9 marks
A lot better than last year.

Andrew Swallow - 21 possessions
He played with Liam Anthony missing with a foot injury.

Lindsay Thomas - 16 possessions, 5 marks, 2 goals
He could be underpriced in fantasy AFL.

Melbourne

Kyle Cheney - 8 kicks, 14 handballs, 7 marks
Maybe he will keep his spot, although they have three or four defenders to bring in.

James Frawley - 17 possessions
Better than he usually does, he played more at half back than full back.

James McDonald - 10 tackles, 23 possessions, 6 marks, 3 frees for
He may not be a good kick for goal, but his hustle brings in fantasy points in the other statistical categories.

Ricky Petterd - 2 goals, 16 possessions, 9 marks, 4 tackles
Played around half forward so those stats were very good, both he and Rivers could be over their injury problems.

Jake Spencer - 8 possessions, 9 hitouts
A very low price and he is playing, fantasy coaches will be happy if he is their 4th ruckman.

AFL 2009 Round 1: Lions 95 - Eagles 86

Brisbane

Jamie Charman - 11 possessions
He played as Black did not.

Mitch Clark - 14 kicks, 9 marks
Brisbane may have finally found that extra tall defender they needed.

Rhan Hooper - 4 goals, 18 possessions
Suspended in preseason, and then has a big game in round 1.

Travis Johnstone - 22 kicks, 15 handballs
A huge game, although he may have started well last year and then slowed down a bit.

Daniel Rich - 21 possessions, 4 tackles
A lot of what he did, kicking long to the key forwards, ended with a Brisbane goal, those who didn't have Rich will sign him in the next week or two.

West Coast

Chad Fletcher - 34 possessions, 11 marks
Great stats, but he may not be in the team all the time, he was a late inclusion here.

Ashley Hansen - 19 possessions, 9 marks, 3 goals
Terrible for fantasy teams early in 2008, those who signed him for round 1 this year are much happier.

Shannon Hurn - 16 possessions, 1 goal
His 70m goal was a highlight, should be a bargain fantasy defender.

Chris Masten - 19 possessions
A solid game but can do better.

Matt Priddis - 29 possessions
A fantasy midfielder that always gets a lot of the ball.

AFL 2009 Round 1: Saints 80 - Swans 65

St Kilda

Steven Baker - 16 possessions, 6 marks, 5 tackles
A low price, and with those stats he will make money.

Luke Ball - 25 possessions, 9 tackles
Always among the leaders for tackles, and they produce some useful fantasy points.

Zac Dawson - 8 possessions
He is cheap and playing, a good choice for the fantasy bench, and some fantasy teams may need him to start in the next few weeks.

Sam Gilbert - 20 possessions, 9 marks
A very good game, showed some athleticism with his marking.

Farren Ray - 23 possessions
Should keep his spot in the St Kilda side for a while.

Sydney

Ed Barlow - 11 possessions
He played after L Ablett didn't.

Craig Bird - 26 possessions
Has a bigger role than he did in 2008.

Heath Grundy - 10 kicks, 10 marks, 2 goals
The Swans need something extra up forward, so maybe Grundy does it this year.

Nick Malceski - 18 possessions
Provided run and stats.

Rhyce Shaw - 13 kicks, 7 marks, 5 tackles
Debuting for the Swans, his stats and those of his teammates could improve next week as a Saints-Swans game never means high scores or stats.

AFL Fantasy News: Raphael Clarke

Injured again: As usual, the round 1 fantasy lockout chaos and a few injuries in the games will mean fantasy coaches will have to reconsider some of their plans, and possibly sit some injured players and rely on youngsters. Those with R Clarke can probably sit him on the bench while he recovers.

Source: St Kilda site
Injury puts Raph Clarke out of action

ST KILDA defender Raphael Clarke could be sidelined for up to four matches after he suffered a hamstring injury in the win over the Sydney Swans at Docklands on Saturday night.

Lyon also confirmed ruckman Michael Gardiner and versatile tall Sam Gilbert were not injured. He said Gardiner was simply tired and Gilbert was suffering from cramp.

AFL Fantasy News: Joel Corey

Stats in the back line: In the middle or at half back, Joel Corey should always have a lot of the ball.

Source: AFL site
Corey cool about back role

Corey ended the game with 28 possessions and said he enjoyed being part of one of the league's best defences.

"I went into the midfield a little bit but the team needed me down at half-back so that is where I was," Corey said after Geelong's eight-point win.

AFL Fantasy News: Matthew Bate

New Melbourne Full Forward: In the first week of the NAB Cup, Bate had a very good game for stats as a key forward. He has the ability to play at full forward, but watch to see if he has the supply of the football.

Source: The Age
Eager Demon steps into large hole

Today against North Melbourne, just seven months later, the 21-year-old will be given first crack at possibly the most gaping of holes in the Melbourne team — the full-forward slot owned for so long by David Neitz.

"I still want to be lean and not too heavy because … I'll probably play a lot of football at high half-forward and in that role you've got to do a lot of running. It's almost like midfield, in that kind of role that Ryan O'Keefe invented.

Saturday, March 28, 2009

AFL 2009 Round 1: Crows 90 - Magpies 86

Adelaide

Trent Hentschel - 11 possessions, 4 marks
Did little up forward, he did setup Walker's goal, he then went back and played well.

Chris Knights - 26 possessions, 1 goal
Plenty of run and stats, as expected.

Andrew McLeod - 25 kicks, 5 handballs, 5 marks
Unstoppable early in the game.

Jared Petrenko - 15 possessions, 1 goal
He played well as did Otten, 19 possessions, and Dangerfield, 15 possessions and a goal.

Bernie Vince - 33 possessions, 11 marks
That is a lot of the ball.

Collingwood

Marty Clarke - 20 possessions, 7 marks, 2 goals
A fantasy defender worth his money, kept running all game.

Shannon Cox - 25 possessions
Always had AFL fantasy potential, and more games like this will see him cement a spot in the Collingwood side.

Tarkyn Lockyer - 21 possessions, 12 marks
Continuing his good preseason form.

Nick Maxwell - 12 possessions, 8 tackles, 2 goals
Played in the middle a lot more than he did in the preseason games.

Shane O'Bree - 28 possessions, 7 marks, 8 tackles
O'Bree, Swan and Pendlebury were the stats leaders for the Magpies, Swan also had 28 possessions while Pendlebury had 29.

AFL Fantasy News: Michael Osborne

Hamstring injury: Last year was when Michael Osborne was a fantasy player to get, he made some money for fantasy teams then but will be on many fewer teams this year. He probably isn't on the Hawthorn team for a couple of weeks.

Source: Herald Sun
Hawks count cost

Osborne was carried off the ground by Hawthorn trainers after falling awkwardly and badly damaging his hamstring six minutes into the second term.

Stephen Gilham (knee) was a late withdrawal, replaced by Cameron Stokes, who limped off with a leg injury but then played out the game.

Also have a look at the SuperCoach scores from the Herald Sun:
SuperCoach scores - Round 1

AFL 2009 Round 1: Cats 110 - Hawks 103

Geelong

Gary Ablett - 35 possessions, 5 tackles, 1 goal
Justified his big price here, and as the fantasy team captain with double points he was a good choice.

Ryan Gamble - 12 possessions, 2 goals, 2 behinds
Did most of his work in the first quarter.

Cameron Ling - 5 frees against, 7 kicks, 18 handballs
The captain there with Harley out, didn't receive a free so his fantasy points took a hit from the umpire's whistle.

Brad Ottens - 22 possessions, 22 hitouts, 7 frees for
Very good in the middle but he kicked 3 behinds up forward, backup ruckman Blake kicked a goal.

Joel Selwood - 25 possessions, 5 marks, 5 tackles, 5 frees for, 6 frees against
Often gets a lot of frees, doesn't usually give that many away.

Hawthorn

Grant Birchall - 29 possessions
Both he and Guerra, 23 possessions, seemed a bit underpriced in fantasy AFL and this game shows they will have the ball a lot.

Lance Franklin - 5 goals
They won't play against a team as good as Geelong very often, so Franklin and Roughead, 4 goals here, will do even more then.

S Mitchell - 34 possessions
Always reliable for a lot of fantasy points.

Matthew Suckling - 14 possessions
Did a bit more than Schoenmakers or Whitecross, but they could all be in the VFL soon as veteran Hawks return.

Travis Tuck - 31 possessions, 6 hitouts, 7 marks
Bargain player continued his preseason form, and like S Tuck he can add some extra fantasy points with hitouts.

Friday, March 27, 2009

AFL Fantasy News: Stephen Hill

Dockers playing youth: Hill and Suban, cheap fantasy defenders, have been named to play in round 1 by the Dockers. Hurley is in for the Bombers, while Melbourne have a bunch of new players but Meesen still can't get a game.

Daniel Harris is still on the outside at North Melbourne, the Power elevated Thompson but are unlikely to play him as he is only an emergency.

Sheedy guessed right for this round, Kepler Bradley is his starting fantasy ruckman, Bradley is playing and Gilmore is not.

AFL Fantasy News: Liam Anthony

Out a month, or more: That is a surprise, Liam Anthony is injured and wont be available for the early rounds of the season. he can probably sit on fantasy benches while he recovers from his foot problem.

Source: North Melbourne site
Anthony forced out

Chief of football Donald McDonald said the stress fractures could sideline the 21-year-old for up to six weeks.

First-round draft pick Jack Ziebell will line up against the Demons, while Andrew Swallow – who played just three games last year – takes Anthony's place in the final 22.

AFL Fantasy News: Scott Gumbleton

Long-term injury: While fantasy coaches are waiting for news from Richmond and the injuries they have, here is an update from Essendon. Don't expect Gumbleton back in the first half of the season, and he may not even play AFL at all this season.

Source: Essendonfc site
Gumbleton to have surgery

Essendon youngster, Scott Gumbleton, will have surgery on a bulging disc in his back in 10-days time.

"This sort of injury takes time to heal and he will need to rest for around 12 weeks before resuming training," he said.

AFL 2009 Round 1: Blues 150 - Tigers 67

Carlton

Eddie Betts - 5 goals, 10 kicks, 5 handballs, 4 tackles
Fevola, and his sore heel, kicked fewer goals so Betts did more.

Bryce Gibbs - 24 kicks, 6 handballs, 6 marks, 3 frees for
A very good kick to handball ratio.

Mitch Robinson - 3 goals, 3 frees for, 6 tackles, 13 possessions
They won't be dropping him next week, and he may even keep his spot when players like Stevens, Carrazzo and Grigg return.

Heath Scotland - 29 possessions
Only had some preseason preparation in the VFL but was back to his high stats game here.

Jarrad Waite - 3 goals, 13 kicks
Was on Richardson for some of the game, and being able to run all over the ground after him put Waite in a position to kick some goals.

Richmond

Nathan Foley - 10 kicks, 21 handballs
Carlton kicked a lot more, Richmond had nearly equal amounts of kicks and handballs, with Foley one of the main handballers but he still brought in plenty of fantasy points.

Daniel Jackson - 10 possessions, 4 frees against
Used in a defensive role against Judd, it didn't allow him to get many stats.

Mitch Morton - 4 goals, 13 kicks, 8 marks
A great kick for goal, he showed he will probably lead the Tigers in goals for this year.

Matthew Richardson - 25 possessions, 13 marks
Ran a long way in this game, collecting many fantasy points.

Troy Simmonds - 20 possessions, 7 marks, 14 hitouts, 3 frees for, 1 goal
Had a few early fumbles in the game, but for fantasy stats he again was a big producer.

All Footy SuperCoach Team 2009 - Round 1

Unable to access the fantasy game sites in the hours leading up to the fantasy lockout, this was probably going to be the team anyway, although Petrenko for Suban may have been something that changed.

Hill is a starter here, and Hurley an emergency, so it could be bad news if neither of them play this round. The other emergencies are Anthony and Ziebell, believing Coach Laidley when he says they will play.

The captain was going to be Pavlich, or Bartel, but instead Corey was the choice. All of them should have big games.

Every defender selected here was considered to be undervalued, and four of them have been in the superstar fantasy player category before. Cornes should have a huge year, Adcock and Malceski have a chance to get back to their very best, and Mackie should also be good. Mundy seems to find his way into the fantasy team every year, the Dockers are going to use him in the middle so his stats could go up. Raines and Hill were very cheap, and now Raines is very injured.

Bartel, Corey and Cross could have the football nearly a hundred times every round, so easy to pick them. Hasleby used to get the ball as much as they did, so he made sense to sign at his cheap price. The Eagles didn't trade Judd for the pick to take Masten just to sit Masten on the bench or waste him at half forward, he has to be in the middle for them and getting a lot more stats. Rich was someone that had to be signed, but didn't need to be started. He is starting this round, and could have a good debut.

Cox was signed for Dream Team, so a couple of bargain ruckmen were taken here instead. Ottens and McIntosh lost money last year, they should make some of it back this time.

Pavlich, Brown and Chapman were signed when SuperCoach opened many weeks ago. Great fantasy forwards who will bring in a lot of fantasy points. Higgins and Skipworth were signed for their money-making ability. McPhee and Bate were in the team for most of the preseason, but a change in the midfield meant some extra money was available so Franklin joined the team. Bate, McPhee, Cloke and D Thomas were considered for the last spot, any of them would have been solid selections. Thomas, after showing he could dominate the ball if used at half back, was chosen.

Suban has been sitting on the bench all preseason, cheap and expected to play a bit so he was a sensible pick. Jack Grimes was going to be the, not very, secret weapon on the bench. When he went down, Hurley was brought in.

Several different midfielders were on the bench, Hartlett nearly made it but was replaced by Otten a couple of days ago. Anthony, with a good preseason and being an older player, was also signed.

A lot of the cheap ruckmen have many reasons to not sign them and a few reasons to put them on the bench, Spencer was added to the Dream Team to save money but senior-listed players were used here. The Sydney-Sydney ruck bench made sense, so White should be playing in the early rounds and maybe Currie replaces him or joins him in the Sydney side later in the season.

Ziebell was always going to be on the bench, a high draft pick to a team that really needs to play him, it was a logical choice. Yarran didn't quite have a big preseason, Sidebottom was good but Collingwood didn't play him a lot, Gumbleton was hurt, M Brown of West Coast would have been a good choice but instead Josh Smith was signed. Fantasy teams need at least one "J Smith" from the Kangaroos. Maybe Josh Smith goes up in price, and is then traded out for Ballantyne.

Brisbane v West Coast - Round 1 Teams

Brisbane

B: Ashley McGrath, Daniel Merrett, Joel Patfull
HB: Luke Power, Joel Macdonald, Josh Drummond
C: Bradd Dalziell, Simon Black, Jed Adcock
HF: Michael Rischitelli, Jonathan Brown, Justin Sherman
F: Travis Johnstone, Daniel Bradshaw, Mitch Clark
Foll: Matthew Leuenberger, Scott Harding, Daniel Rich
I/C: Rhan Hooper, Cheynee Stiller, Tom Collier, Troy Selwood

Emg: Jamie Charman, Tim Notting, James Polkinghorne

AFL Fantasy Watch: Rich and Collier could be very useful fantasy players. Charman, who didn't play a preseason game, isn't in the 22 players so if he isn't a late addition it means Leuenberger could start the year with a big game. Stiller and Selwood get another chance to cement a spot with their new coach.

West Coast

B: Brett Jones, Darren Glass, David Wirrpanda
HB: Mark Nicoski, Eric Mackenzie, Shannon Hurn
C: Matt Rosa, Daniel Kerr, Matt Spangher
HF: Brent Staker, Ashley Hansen, Sam Butler
F: Mitch Brown, Quinten Lynch, Mark LeCras
Foll: Dean Cox, Matt Priddis, Chris Masten
I/C: Brad Ebert, Andrew Embley, Mark Seaby, Tyson Stenglein

Emg: Chad Fletcher, Ben McKinley, Scott Selwood

AFL Fantasy Watch: Some good news for fantasy coaches. Brown, Hurn, Spangher, Butler, Masten, they are all named. Ebert and Rosa are also in the team.

St Kilda v Sydney - Round 1 Teams

St Kilda

B: Farren Ray, Jason Blake, Zac Dawson
HB: Jarryn Geary, Sam Fisher, Brendon Goddard
C: Jason Gram, Luke Ball, Nick Dal Santo
HF: Stephen Milne, Nick Riewoldt, Adam Schneider
F: Andrew McQualter, Justin Koschitzke, Sam Gilbert
Foll: Michael Gardiner, Clint Jones, Leigh Montagna
I/C: Steven Baker, Raphael Clarke, James Gwilt, Steven King

Emg: Colm Begley, Ben McEvoy, Robert Eddy

AFL Fantasy Watch: McEvoy close to selection, something that may be important later in the season. Dawson is playing, Geary and Ray too. Hayes is out.

Sydney

B: Craig Bolton, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Martin Mattner
HB: Rhyce Shaw, Heath Grundy, Kieren Jack
C: Jarrad McVeigh, Brett Kirk, Jared Crouch
HF: Ryan O’Keefe, Ted Richards, Luke Ablett
F: Paul Bevan, Barry Hall, Jarred Moore
Foll: Darren Jolly, Adam Goodes, Jude Bolton
I/C: Craig Bird, Amon Buchanan, Nick Malceski, Jesse White

Emg: Ed Barlow, Matt O’Dwyer, Mike Pyke

AFL Fantasy Watch: Pyke nearly made it, but Barlow not getting into the side is more of a surprise. Richards, Grundy and White could be used up forward, which is where Barlow had played during preseason. Bird could be a good signing.

Port Adelaide v Essendon - Round 1 Teams

Port Adelaide

B: Michael Pettigrew, Alipate Carlile, Jacob Surjan
HB: Nathan Krakouer, Troy Chaplin, Domenic Cassisi
C: Shaun Burgoyne, Chad Cornes, Steven Salopek
HF: Robert Gray, Justin Westhoff, Peter Burgoyne
F: Brett Ebert, Warren Tredrea, Daniel Motlop
Foll: Dean Brogan, Kane Cornes, Danyle Pearce

I/C from: Travis Boak, Josh Carr, Brendon Lade, Tom Logan, David Rodan, Wade Thompson, Toby Thurstans

AFL Fantasy Watch: Chad Cornes in the middle there, that is where he say he will play.

Essendon

B: Henry Slattery, Michael Hurley, Dustin Fletcher
HB: Heath Hocking, Paddy Ryder, Courtenay Dempsey
C: Bachar Houli, Brent Stanton, Andrew Lovett
HF: Alwyn Davey, Jay Neagle, Adam McPhee
F: Angus Monfries, Matthew Lloyd, Scott Lucas
Foll: David Hille, Jobe Watson, Jason Winderlich

I/C (from): Tom Bellchambers, Hayden Skipworth, Sam Lonergan, Tayte Pears, Ricky Dyson, Jarrod Atkinson, Jay Nash

AFL Fantasy Watch: Gumbleton won't be available for a while, so Lucas and Neagle become better fantasy players to sign. if Essendon still want to try four tall forwards, Hurley could also be used there.

Hawthorn v Geelong - Round 1 Teams

Hawthorn

B: Campbell Brown, Stephen Gilham, Brent Guerra
HB: Luke Hodge, Tom Murphy, Grant Birchall
C: Clinton Young, Sam Mitchell, Brendan Whitecross
HF: Michael Osborne, Lance Franklin, Stuart Dew
F: Mark Williams, Jarryd Roughead, Cyril Rioli
Foll: Simon Taylor, Brad Sewell, Chance Bateman
I/C: Brent Renouf, Ryan Schoenmakers, Matt Suckling, Travis Tuck

Emg: Josh Kennedy, Cameron Stokes, Mitch Thorp

AFL Fantasy Watch: A possible trap for fantasy coaches, the new players in the Hawthorn side may only play for a week or two as a lot of veterans will return soon.

Geelong

B: Darren Milburn, Matthew Scarlett, Andrew Mackie
HB: Joel Corey, Harry Taylor, Max Rooke
C: Jimmy Bartel, Corey Enright, Cameron Ling
HF: James Kelly, Cameron Mooney, Ryan Gamble
F: Paul Chapman, Tom Lonergan, Steve Johnson
Foll: Brad Ottens, Joel Selwood, Gary Ablett
I/C: Mark Blake, Mathew Stokes, Travis Varcoe, David Wojcinski

Emg: Simon Hogan, Tom Hawkins, Shannon Byrnes

AFL Fantasy Watch: Hogan doesn't make it, so not as good a choice for the bench as he may have been.

Fremantle v Western Bulldogs - Round 1 Teams

Fremantle

B: Roger Hayden, Michael Johnson, Luke McPharlin
HB: Josh Head, Antoni Grover, Steven Dodd
C: Rhys Palmer, Paul Hasleby, Garrick Ibbotson
HF: Paul Duffield, Chris Tarrant, Byron Schammer
F: Brett Peake, Ryan Murphy, Matthew Pavlich
Foll: Aaron Sandilands, Ryan Crowley, David Mundy

I/C (from): Marcus Drum, Scott Thornton, Nick Suban, Kepler Bradley, Stephen Hill, Daniel Gilmore, Andrew Browne

AFL Fantasy Watch: Gilmore or Bradley, Sheedy could be worried as he is starting Bradley.

Western Bulldogs

B: Dylan Addison, Brian Lake, Stephen Tiller
HB: Lindsay Gilbee, Dale Morris, Ryan Hargrave
C: Daniel Cross, Ryan Griffen, Josh Hill
HF: Robert Murphy, Mitch Hahn, Brad Johnson
F: Shaun Higgins, Will Minson, Jason Akermanis
Foll: Ben Hudson, Matthew Boyd, Adam Cooney

I/C (from): Tim Callan, Nathan Eagleton, Andrejs Everitt, Jarrod Harbrow, Daniel Giansiracusa, Callan Ward, Tom Williams

AFL Fantasy Watch: The same small forward line as usual, so no J Grant yet.

Melbourne v North Melbourne - Round 1 Teams

Melbourne

B: Jared Rivers, Matthew Warnock, Clint Bartram
HB: Colin Garland, James Frawley, Brad Green
C: Aaron Davey, Brock McLean, Brent Moloney
HF: Cameron Bruce, Paul Johnson, Cale Morton
F: Brad Miller, Matthew Bate, Ricky Petterd
Foll: Jake Spencer, James McDonald, Simon Buckley

I/C from: Jamie Bennell, Kyle Cheney, Nathan Jones, Neville Jetta, Stefan Martin, Lynden Dunn, John Meesen

AFL Fantasy Watch: Rivers should return to action, he is at a good price, but it could take him a while to get going and maybe it is better to trade for him if he is getting stats.

North Melbourne

B: Daniel Pratt, Michael Firrito, Scott McMahon
HB: Leigh Harding, Lachlan Hansen, Josh Gibson
C: Brady Rawlings, Adam Simpson, Liam Anthony
HF: Ed Lower, Drew Petrie, Lindsay Thomas
F: Matt Campbell, David Hale, Brent Harvey
Foll: Hamish McIntosh, Daniel Wells, Jack Ziebell

I/C (from): Daniel Harris, Sam Power, Andrew Swallow, Gavin Urquhart, Scott Thompson, Nathan Grima, Josh Smith

AFL Fantasy Watch: The Kangaroos said that Ziebell and Anthony will play. Goldstein isn't there, so more minutes for their other three talls, McIntosh, Petrie and Hale.

Collingwood v Adelaide - Round 1 Teams

Collingwood

B: Shannon Cox, Simon Prestgiacomo, Tyson Goldsack
HB: Harry O’Brien, Nathan Brown, Nick Maxwell (c)
C: Martin Clarke, Alan Didak, Alan Toovey
HF: Dale Thomas, Travis Cloke, Paul Medhurst
F: John Anthony, Ben Reid, Shane O’Bree
Foll: Josh Fraser, Tarkyn Lockyer, Scott Pendlebury
Int: Leon Davis, Ben Johnson, Dane Swan, Chris Bryan

Emg: Leigh Brown, Dane Beams, Danny Stanley

AFL Fantasy Watch: Reid could provide some value, he can be used as a forward or defender by Collingwood, so maybe he can keep his spot when Rocca returns. Beams only an emergency, and no Sidebottom yet.

Adelaide

B: Michael Doughty, Ben Rutten, Andy Otten
HB: Brent Reilly, Nathan Bock, Andrew McLeod
C: Myke Cook, Simon Goodwin, Chris Knights
HF: Richard Douglas, Trent Hentschel, David Mackay
F: Taylor Walker, Kurt Tippett, Jason Porplyzia
Foll: Ivan Maric, Bernie Vince, Tyson Edwards
I/C: Nathan van Berlo, Scott Stevens, Patrick Dangerfield, Jared Petrenko

Emg: Jonathan Griffin, Jarrhan Jacky, Robert Shirley

AFL Fantasy Watch: Very helpful to fantasy teams. Otten, Dangerfield, Petrenko and Walker are in.

AFL Fantasy News: Wade Thompson

Elevated, better late than never: Another cheap fantasy forward for people to consider, the Power have thought about it and decided to elevate fast Wade Thompson.

Source: Herald Sun
Port rookie quick to rise

WADE Thompson's rapid rise from Port Adelaide's rookie list to a place in senior side is almost complete

"You'd like to think if he is getting upgraded then he's a fair chance to play, so he's kicked a fair few goals for us in the pre-season cup and just his gradual improvement has been exciting for us," said Power captain Dom Cassisi.

AFL Fantasy News: Stephen Hill

Hill still a maybe: Fantasy coaches can have Hill on the bench for round 1, and have a pleasant weekend. Fantasy coaches who want to start Hill, and he should be worth starting, won't know before the fantasy lockout if he is in the Fremantle side. As long as there is a good emergency defender if Hill doesn't play, the risk would be small.

Source: Fox Sports
Luke McPharlin a certainty, Stephen Hill in doubt for Fremantle Dockers

Harvey said Hill, who impressed during Fremantle's pre-season games, would be named in the 25-man squad.

But the coach said he would assess the Bulldogs' likely line-up before making a final decision on whether to include the fleet-footed midfielder/defender, who weighs just 69kg.

AFL Fantasy News: Michael Hurley

They may play: A story on the AFL site goes over some of the new players who could debut. A lot of questions will be answered in three hours time, although the ones who play on Sunday will cause fantasy coaches to worry, so try to have an emergency behind them.

Source: AFL site
Talented young guns set to make AFL mark

Essendon
Fifth overall draft pick Michael Hurley carries plenty of expectation into his first season and is a good chance to strut his stuff in front of the Bomber faithful for the first time against the Power on Sunday. David Zaharakis has also been given a taste over pre-season and could be an outside shot.

Fremantle
Excitement machine Stephen Hill penciled his name in to the round one line-up early in the piece, but Mark Harvey is playing his cards close to his chest. Nick Suban and nominated rookie Greg Broughton are also considered to have strong cases for selection.

A Useful Fantasy Page

The Herald Sun has a page with links to a lot of useful information, for injuries, the teams and preseason stats.

Don't risk missing out
More people than ever before have signed on to play Australia's biggest fantasy football - there's already more than 270,000 SuperCoaches.

While we have made improvements to our technology to handle the increased load, the site may experience problems as people rush to update their teams tonight.

AFL Fantasy News: Jack Ziebell

Good news from Kangaroos: This news should really help fantasy coaches as the lockout looms. The Kangaroos have said that popular fantasy picks Ziebell and Anthony will be there in round 1.

Source: AFL site
Roos to blood two draftees

Mature-age East Fremantle recruit Liam Anthony was pick No.43 in last year's NAB AFL Draft,. He will debut alongside Jack Ziebell, 18, who the Roos selected with their first round pick in November (No.9 overall).

Source: AFL site
Roo Smith out for two months

NORTH Melbourne defender Jesse Smith will miss up to two months with a recurring hamstring injury.

AFL Fantasy News: Chad Cornes

Biggest bargain: He is probably the biggest bargain in fantasy AFL this season, Chad Cornes dropped a lot of money last year as he played for a while with several injuries, he is totally healthy now.

Source: AFL site
Turning 2008 nightmare into 2009 Dream

“They’ve got me as a defender when I’m going to play most of the time in the midfield which should give me a better chance to get some more possessions and kick a few more goals.”

For those looking for a running defender who will get plenty of touches out of the back half, Cornes says Krakouer and Steven Salopek are the best bets for the Power, while Richmond’s Andrew Raines is another bargain buy.

Kepler Bradley ?

Today can be a crazy day, with rumours, shock team selections, computer lockdowns just before the lockout.

If you are playing FOX Sports AFL Fantasy, get it out of the way early in the day. The lockout there is earlier, possibly 5:00pm.

The Sunday games won’t have a lot of detail, just squads, so picking fringe players from the teams playing then will be a risk. A risk that can be lessened if you have a fantasy emergency ready that you know will be playing.

Here is what afl.com.au says:
Hawthorn, Geelong, Collingwood, Adelaide, the Brisbane Lions, West Coast, St Kilda and the Sydney Swans will announce their sides (22 + three emergencies) on Thursday afternoon.

Melbourne, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Essendon, Fremantle and the Western Bulldogs will confirm their extended squads (25, no emergencies) on Thursday afternoon, and trim them on Friday afternoon.

Radio rumours can hurt fantasy coaches, so think twice before making a move when a radio station says something without a soundbite from someone at the specific club saying it is true.

If you do end up making a mistake for round 1, it may not be a big one as it is a long season. A mistake can even be helpful, as it could give you the player that you need to trade out, making it easier to trade in a player in the future weeks, or you may be right and the AFL coach wrong and he changes his mind for the next round.

Make your own decisions and if you want to pick a player that others don’t, it could end up being the right thing. Sheedy is going with Bradley, yet again.

Sheedy’s team, from the Herald Sun, for those who want some of the players he has, or for those who want to avoid his players. There wasn’t a lot wrong with the players he had last year, just that he used most of his trades in the first half of the season.

AFL Fantasy News: Scott Thompson

Hamstring, in doubt: Today will be the day of a lot of rumours, there is doubt about Hayes at St Kilda and now Thompson at the Crows.

Source: The Age
Crows star Thompson in doubt for Pies clash

ADELAIDE may lose quality midfielder Scott Thompson for Saturday's clash against Collingwood at the MCG after he complained of hamstring discomfort yesterday.

"I think we've got seven or eight guys ready to play. (Jared) Petrenko, (Jarrhan) Jacky, (Myke) Cook, (Andy) Otten, (Patrick) Dangerfield, (Rory) Sloane. All those guys are ready. It's just a matter of going out there and doing it."

AFL Fantasy News: Daniel Rich

Coach is happy: Still keeping fantasy coaches guessing, Brisbane are talking about Rich but not saying if he will debut.

Source: The West Australian
Voss wary of Eagles

Voss declared Simon Black would play, despite having an interrupted pre-season due to a myriad of fitness and health issues, while No. 7 draft pick Daniel Rich’s impressive summer had him very much in the frame.

“He still has a lot of work to do, but what he has done he has done very, very well and if he does get a game on the weekend, it’s because he’s shown us his qualities and work ethic, not because he’s a first-round draft selection.”

AFL Fantasy News: Cameron Mooney

Should be playing: Geelong could have extra size up forward, Mooney is expected to play and they could have Hawkins up there too.

Source: The Age
Geelong looks to Mooney, Lonergan

Thompson said the build-up to the game was "good for footy" and "our boys would want to come out and play well" against the team that denied them back-to-back flags. Cameron Mooney is expected to be named today despite not playing a pre-season game, while Tom Hawkins has been declared fit and will play in the Cats' revamped forward line.

Kane Tenace and first-year player Dan McKenna have also been earmarked as possible replacements in the Cats' back six, but Lonergan is the more likely choice at this early stage of the season.

AFL Fantasy News: Scott Gumbleton

Not good: He quickly went from one of the best bench choices to being someone that fantasy teams don't need.

Source: AFL site
Bomber Gumbleton faces months out

ESSENDON youngster Scott Gumbleton's immediate playing future is in doubt, with the club weighing up surgery that would sideline the forward for at least 12 weeks.

"The decision now lies between taking the conservative approach and giving him a period of rest or having surgery which would sideline him for at least 12 weeks," he said.

Richmond v Carlton - Round 1 Teams

Richmond

B: Chris Newman, Kelvin Moore, Andrew Raines
HB: Joel Bowden, Luke McGuane, Jordan McMahon
C: Shane Edwards, Shane Tuck, Matthew White
HF: Nathan Brown, Matthew Richardson, Jack Riewoldt
F: Ben Cousins, Jay Schulz, Richard Tambling
Foll: Troy Simmonds, Brett Deledio, Nathan Foley
I/C: Will Thursfield, Andrew Browne, Mitch Morton. Daniel Jackson

EMG: Andrew Collins, Dean Polo, Alex Rance

AFL Fantasy Watch: Rance nearly made it, he can still sit on a fantasy bench but won't be very useful as a fantasy emergency in week 1.

Raines will be a popular fantasy player and he returns for this game. Good stats, a significant price rise, Raines could stay on a fantasy team all year or rise in value for a while before being traded for a superstar.

Troy Simmonds will always be among the top ruckmen for possessions, and Browne won't play many minutes in this game.

Carlton

B: Paul Bower, Michael Jamison, Aaron Joseph
HB: Jordan Russell, Bret Thornton, Heath Scotland
C: Kade Simpson, Marc Murphy, Chris Johnson
HF: Ryan Houlihan, Jarrad Waite, Jeff Garlett
F: Cameron Cloke, Brendan Fevola, Eddie Betts
Foll: Matthew Kreuzer, Bryce Gibbs, Chris Judd
I/C: Richard Hadley, Sam Jacobs, Mitch Robinson, Simon Wiggins

EMG: Dennis Armfield, Shaun Hampson, Andrew Walker

AFL Fantasy Watch: So Scotland probably is playing, while Walker probably isn't. Something for fantasy coaches to watch from now until the round 1 lockout.

Kreuzer may actually not be hurt for fantasy points by two other ruck types in the side, Cloke and Jacobs. As B Fisher is out, Cloke could play forward all game. Simmonds, a smaller ruckman, is a good matchup for Kreuzer and both players could run around a lot getting stats.

Houlihan is there, and should help fantasy teams make money during the season. Garlett and Joseph are very cheap, but Carlton will be getting back players like Stevens, Carrazzo, Walker, Grigg and also have Yarran to consider.

AFL Fantasy News: Mike Pyke

Elevation: Maybe the Swans are demanding extra from Coach Roos, he is writing the stories for their internet site.

So Pyke will be available for selection, and fantasy coaches now have three cheap ruckmen from Sydney to consider.

Source: Sydney site
Congratulations Pykey!

by Paul Roos

Congratulations Pykey, what a terrific effort in such a short amount of time, for the former Canadian rugby union player to now be on the senior list of an AFL Club.

AFL Fantasy News: Mitch Robinson

The big and the small: A huge ruckman, a little tagger, a quick forward pocket and a versatile Tasmanian will play their first AFL games.

All are cheap in fantasy AFL, Jacobs is one of several rookie ruckmen in the AFL who could save a fantasy team money as their 4th ruckman. Robinson is a chance to play a lot, and is a good option for the midfielders bench.

This means that Yarran isn't in the team. A bit of a shock, especially as they prefer to play someone from the rookie draft in the same position as Yarran, a top 10 pick in the AFL National Draft.

Source: AFL site
Carlton prepares to blood four debutants

Mitch Robinson, Aaron Joseph, Jeff Garlett and Sam Jacobs will all make their AFL debuts in the highly-anticipated match, the club revealed ahead of Wednesday afternoon's official team selection.

Ex-Demon Chris Johnson will also run out in the navy blue for the first time.

AFL Club News - Season Preview

The Herald Sun has a lot of information for fantasy coaches to go over before the season starts. Injuries, new players, the good and the bad.

State of the footy nation

FREMANTLE
MEDICAL ROOM
Des Headland will miss a large chunk of the season with a soft-tissue injury to his lower right leg while mature-age recruit Hayden Ballantyne will have to wait to debut due to a wrist injury.

HAWTHORN
MEDICAL ROOM
Trent Croad (foot) will definitely miss early on while fellow defenders Campbell Brown (ankle) and Stephen Gilham (knee) are also under an injury cloud. Rick Ladson (knee), Jordan Lewis (shoulder) and Xavier Ellis (hip) will also struggle to be ready for Round 1 and Grant Birchall (hamstring), Chance Bateman (knee), Lance Franklin (thumb) and Luke Hodge (ankle) will play but with limited pre-season match practice.

AFL Fantasy News: Andrew Embley

Eagle update: Adam Hunter probably misses, Andrew Embley probably plays. Both have been fantasy stars in previous years, both could again be great in 2009 although possibly as players to trade for later.

Source: The West Australian
Worsfold weighs up Hunter risk

While Hunter is in doubt for the Eagles’ Queensland road trip Worsfold threw his support behind the key position player’s fellow Swans product Andrew Embley, who suffered a knee injury early in the pre-season.

“In a way we would have lightened him off anyway at some stage, so it’s been a pretty good preparation for him. He’s fit to go, I’m leaning towards playing him.

AFL Fantasy News: Craig Bird

Some hot, a few not: The Herald Sun has provided some tips for SuperCoaches. Click on the link to see who could be the bargains for fantasy teams.

Source: Herald Sun
Ultimate Supercoach pre-season guide

NOT
Chris Yarran (Fwd) $149,200
The No.6 draft pick had a disappointing pre-season despite predictions he was a walk-up start. Injured early in his first game, he averaged 22 points a game.

HOT
Craig Bird (Mid) $340,200
Was one of the best debutants last year and could become a regular top-scorer this year after averaging 75 in four pre-season games.

AFL Fantasy News: Stephen Hill

New Docker: More talk that Hill is a definitely going to be there, and maybe cheap fantasy defenders Suban and Broughton are also a chance.

Source: The West Australian
Pavlich dismisses Freo's false starts

The Dockers look set to be boosted by the availability of Luke McPharlin and Andrew Browne, but Des Headland and Chris Mayne won’t play.

First-round draft pick Stephen Hill is almost certain to take on the Bulldogs after a brilliant pre-season while Victorian Nick Suban and upgraded Subiaco rookie Greg Broughton are also in contention.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

AFL Fantasy News: Andrew Browne

Richmond going big: The Tigers have the short and mobile Troy Simmonds as their top ruckman, so it makes some sense for them to go with the extra size of Browne to bring something different.

Now a candidate for a fantasy team's 4th ruck spot, Browne will save a fantasy team money but he isn't guaranteed to play a lot of games.

Source: Richmond site
Richmond elevates rookie ruckman

RICHMOND’S No.2 ruck spot for the season opener has been snared by 18-year-old elevated rookie Andrew Browne.

“His form in his last two NAB Challenge practice games has been remarkable.

AFL Fantasy News: Liam Anthony

More ready than others: Liam Anthony details why he is a good pick for a fantasy team, he is older and more prepared than most of the players new to AFL.

Source: AFL site
Anthony all quiet on North call-up

"I've had three pre-seasons which are probably bigger than [those for] 18-year-olds that have played in the TAC Cup. My body's physically more prepared than the 18-year-olds.

First-round draft pick Jack Ziebell, defender Nathan Grima and forward Ben Warren are among the other candidates, but weight of pre-season performances set Anthony and Ziebell apart from their teammates.

AFL Fantasy News: David Johnson

That Johnson: When the headline said that a player called Johnson was going to miss round 1, it seemed like it would be a big deal. But it's not Chris, Ben, Michael, Steve, Paul or Brad Johnson, it is Geelong's David Johnson.

Wojcinski should be in the Geelong side no matter what, and Tenace is cheap for a fantasy player with his experience in the AFL.

Source: AFL site
Johnson to miss round one clash

GEELONG defender David Johnson has been ruled out of this week's clash with Hawthorn with a hamstring injury.

Premiership player David Wojcinski had an interrupted pre-season but will come into calculations for Friday night's MCG blockbuster as will Kane Tenace.

AFL Fantasy News: Hayden Skipworth

Will definitely play: That is helpful to fantasy coaches, as Essendon's coach says that Skipworth will be playing. Many fantasy coaches will have Skipworth up forward, he could also be used in the middle if you intend to trade him after he makes money, it just depends on the balance of the fantasy forward line and midfield, with how many stars there are to keep all season and how many players could be traded.

It is good that Essendon think that Hurley is a forward or back. As a forward, he is just as good as Neagle or Gumbleton, although in the back line is probably where Hurley is needed more. He, and Zaharakis, could play in round 1. The Bombers said that M McVeigh, Welsh, Reimers, Gumbleton and Prismall won't be there for round 1. Welsh and Prismall will miss half the season.

Skipworth to make Essendon debut this week

“Skipworth will definitely play his first game for the Essendon Football Club. He’s been a magnificent story of resilience and persistence over the two or three years,” he said from Windy Hill on Tuesday.

“Michael’s a key forward or back, David’s more a midfielder, but Michael is a prodigious talent, he’s got an amazing amount of humility about him, and the courage he’s shown in a couple of practice matches has been first class.

AFL Fantasy News: Andrew Browne

Cheap rookies: Click on the story and try to figure out who the Blues and Tigers will have in their sides when the AFL season begins. Rookies Browne, Garlett and Jacobs could be playing. M Robinson and C Johnson could also play.

Fantasy coaches with Yarran may have to change things around if Robinson and Garlett are named and he isn't. Maybe Yarran can go to the fantasy bench, maybe he gets traded out.

Andrew Browne, and Carlton's Garlett, would be rookie elevations. For fantasy coaches, the important thing is they will only be available to play for their AFL clubs while another player is out injured. Jacobs is a nominated rookie, a chance to be selected by Carlton every round of the season.

Tigers tossing up taking a gamble on rookie

The Blues, meanwhile, will today upgrade rookie Jeff Garlett onto the senior list in order to select him for the clash with the Tigers.

Richmond has until 5pm today to decide whether or not to promote 205-centimetre ruckman Andrew Browne from the club's rookie list into the senior team to take his place in front of a crowd expected to top 80,000.

AFL Fantasy News: Daniel Rich

Doubts: The Dockers caused a fantasy lockout fracas a year ago when Palmer wasn't in their round 1 team. Maybe the Lions will do the same thing with Rich, but hopefully not.

Brisbane coach Michael Voss wants Lions to back their kicking skills

Voss was not ready to settle guessing games over his team selection for Saturday night's home season opener against West Coast which surround midfield mainstay Simon Black and rookie Daniel Rich.

And he thinks Rich is "physically able" to compete as an 18-year-old AFL debutant.

AFL Fantasy News: Luke McPharlin

Playing, but where: McPharlin has solid stats when played in the back line, but some of his biggest fantasy scores have been when he was at full forward.

If opposition teams think holding down Sandilands is a good way to stop him, it could mean more free kicks for him and extra fantasy points.

Dockers in full voice to protect big man

Last week, coach Mark Harvey claimed Carlton ruckmen deliberately held down Sandilands in ruck contests at a practice match in Bunbury so a third man could come over the top and win the tap.

Pavlich declared swingman Luke McPharlin, who has missed the latter half of the pre-season with an Achilles tendon problem, a certain starter against the Bulldogs in the opening round at Subiaco on Sunday.

SuperCoach Preseason Scores

Go to the Herald Sun AFL page and download the preseason scores for SuperCoach. Click where it says Your guide: SuperCoach NAB scores. The players are sorted by team, and then the best for fantasy points in preseason. Scores for all 4 rounds are included.

If you can’t download it, or don’t have the Excel software, below are all the players listed by average SuperCoach points per game from preseason.

If you haven’t signed up for SuperCoach, or Dream Team or Fox Sports Fantasy AFL, there is still plenty of time to do it.
