AFL Fantasy News: Stephen Hill

Hill impresses the coach: Coach Harvey annoyed fantasy coaches last year by not playing Palmer in round 1, which wasn't the only mistake he made last season. Maybe he has learned from that, and S Hill will be playing when the season starts. As Hill is defender eligible it makes him a useful fantasy player to have, but due to his draft position his fantasy price isn't as cheap as other new players so he may have to start on fantasy teams as it is too much money to have on fantasy benches.

Youth on show for Freo's NAB Cup opener

Harvey said Pavlich would be joining his teammates on Subiaco Oval if it was round one, but the coach needed to monitor how many serious hit-outs he had between now and Fremantle's season opener.

"[Hill] has produced everything on the training track and in the game -- even though it was an intra-club which I don't really rate from a performance point of view. But he's just got some ability ... that suggest he can play a game at this stage, so we'll see how he goes this week.

AFL Fantasy News: Scott Gumbleton

He's playing: Whatever was said last year will be said again for Gumbleton and fantasy AFL. Drafted very high, injured too often, if he can get on the field with Lloyd and Lucas he could be a fantasy player to have due to his very low price.

Essendon's Matthew Lloyd set to face the Western Bulldogs

The Bombers' captain and young forward were to be rested but will now be available for the match, which will raise money for the bushfire appeal.

Meanwhile, St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt is set to resume running this week after having knee surgery late last month.

AFL Fantasy News: Tom Harley

Knee problems: Taylor's spot in the Geelong side is secure for a while as Harley will be joining Egan on the sidelines. While the Cats can probably get by with Milburn, Mackie and Hunt playing on taller opponents, the Cats could also introduce a new, and cheap for AFL fantasy, player like Brown, Gillies or maybe McKenna. Geelong can also put Lonergan in the back line, with Tom Hawkins added up forward.

Geelong captain Tom Harley out for a month

The club is hoping a conservative approach with the 30-year-old's rehabilitation will get him back on the field at some stage in the first half of the season.

Harley played every game last season and earned his first All-Australian jumper.

AFL Fantasy News: Greg Gallman

Injured: With Bassett retired, there is a chance that a new fantasy player will emerge in the Adelaide back line. It won't be Gallman, at least in the early rounds of the season as he is out.

Greg Gallman to miss 10 weeks after breaking collarbone in Darwin

ADELAIDE defender Greg Gallman - a contender to fill spots vacated by retired Nathan Bassett and delisted Kris Massie - will miss the start of the premiership season after X-rays confirmed he has broken a collarbone.

His setback comes just days after Crows defensive coach Ben Hart said that Gallman was one of the chief contenders to replace Bassett and Massie in the back half.

2009 AFL Stats Projections - Fantasy Contributors - Carlton

Shaun Grigg
9k, 9h, 18p, 5m. 10 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Up!
Notes: Versatile player who could play every game.

Bret Thornton
10k, 5h, 15p, 5m. 0 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Down!
Notes: Started last year with some huge games for stats.

Brad Fisher
11k, 3h, 14p, 7m. 33 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Up!
Notes: Carlton may kick to him more, to try something different to win, and that would help his fantasy numbers.

Cameron Cloke
5k, 5h, 10p, 5m, 10ho. 11 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Down!
Notes: The future there has to be Kreuzer and Warnock, although the future may not be the 2009 season.

Jordan Russell
5k, 5h, 10p, 3m. 2 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Down!
Notes: Kicked 4 goals and 13 behinds in 2008, so he isn't the most skilled player around.

Adam Bentick
6k, 12h, 18p, 2m. 2 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Same!
Notes: When he plays, which isn't that often, he gets a lot of tackles and handballs.

Eddie Betts
8k, 6h, 14p, 3m. 30 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Same!
Notes: Knows how to play the small forward role, but unlikely to get into the midfield for extra stats.

Matthew Kreuzer
6k, 8h, 14p, 4m, 12ho. 25 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Up!!
Notes: Should play in the ruck and up forward, and he kicked 13 goals and only 1 behind in 2008.

Simon Wiggins
6k, 6h, 12p, 5m. 9 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Down!
Notes: May struggle to keep his spot in the side as they drafted players that can play his position.

Paul Bower
8k, 8h, 16p, 5m. 1 goal.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Up!
Notes: Could be ready for a breakout season.

Steven Browne
6k, 6h, 12p, 3m. 6 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Same!
Notes: A good price rise last year, won't be as popular in fantasy AFL this time.

Michael Jamison
6k, 4h, 10p, 4m. 0 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Same!
Notes: Doesn't do a lot for stats down back.

Setanta O'hAilpin
4k, 5h, 9p, 4m. 2 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Same!
Notes: Might get games at full back, which isn't great for fantasy AFL.

Dennis Armfield
4k, 6h, 10p, 3m. 3 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Down!
Notes: Injuries may need to hit before he plays.

Ryan Houlihan
10k, 7h, 17p, 4m. 15 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Same!
Notes: May be a running defender, so lots of stats, or a small forward, which would mean fewer fantasy points.

Richard Hadley
7k, 7h, 14p, 3m. 1 goal.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008:
Notes: A career full of injuries, so not a good option for fantasy teams.

Chris Yarran
8k, 3h, 11p, 4m. 33 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008:
Notes: Should have a big price rise in fantasy footy games, they picked him early and must intend to play him for 22 games.

Chris Johnson
8k, 6h, 14p, 3m. 7 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Down!
Notes: Moved from Melbourne, but may not have more playing time with Carlton unless injuries hit.

Robert Warnock
4k, 5h, 9p, 3m, 14ho. 4 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008:
Notes: Not healthy at the moment, but when he plays he should have a lot of hitouts, a stat his new team struggles in.

AFL Fantasy News: Taylor Walker

Crows can't kick goals: The Crows went to Darwin and kicked 6 goals, and their next game will be more difficult as they face the Cats. They are expected to unveil full forward Taylor Walker in that game, and if he kicks a few goals then fantasy coaches will put him on their benches as he is cheap.

Source: Adelaide site
Craig’s Crows ‘fell apart’ in Darwin

The Crows reported two injuries from the clash. Unlucky defender Greg Gallman, who missed most of last season with knee and ankle injuries, was taken to hospital with a suspected broken collarbone and Patrick Dangerfield suffered mild concussion.

Forward Taylor Walker withdrew from the side with a sore quad, but should be fit for round one of the NAB Cup against Geelong on February 21.

What About This Team, A Very Cheap Bench

To get more money to spend on your starters, add a cheap rookie at every bench spot and then add another bench player who is at the lowest price of the AFL listed players, which is $94,200 in SuperCoach this season. When signing rookies, look to the clubs that already have injuries or a lack of depth in a certain position, and also remember that rookie players are more likely to get games if their AFL club is struggling.

Andrew Carrazzo
13k, 11h, 24p, 5m. 2 goals.

2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Same!
Notes: Bargain in fantasy last year, higher price now.

Chris Judd
13k, 12h, 25p, 4m. 22 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Up!
Notes: Supposed to be a lot healthier than he was a year ago.

Heath Scotland
12k, 8h, 20p, 5m. 10 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Down!
Notes: Could start to lose some stats to the younger players there.

Bryce Gibbs
12k, 10h, 22p, 6m. 15 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Same!
Notes: Should continue developing his game.

Jarrad Waite
13k, 5h, 18p, 7m. 5 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Same!
Notes: Probably at centre half back, where he can mark a lot of opposition kicks.

Brendan Fevola
10k, 3h, 13p, 6m. 80 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Down!
Notes: Might kick 100 goals, or could implode, fantasy coaches know he is a risk.

Kade Simpson
12k, 9h, 21p, 6m. 12 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Up!
Notes: Didn't do as well as was expected last year, which means he could have more stats in 2009.

Andrew Walker
12k, 8h, 20p, 6m. 10 goals.
2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Same!
Notes: Oft-injured, but can get plenty of stats for a fantasy backman.

AFL Preseason: Magpies 116 - Eagles 54

Collingwood

Anthony Corrie: 6 kicks, 11 handballs
Didn't use the ball too well, and may not be in the team when they get a few players back.

Leon Davis: 18 kicks, 3 handballs, 2 goals
A great kick to handball ratio.

Ben Johnson: 2 goals, 9 kicks, 10 handballs
Kicked precisely early in the game.

Tarkyn Lockyer: 3 goals, 31 possessions, 9 marks, 5 tackles
Did everything, but may not be as effective up forward when Medhurst plays.

Simon Prestigiacomo: 3 kicks, 6 handballs, 2 tackles
Did try to get more into the play.

West Coast

Adam Cockie: 7 kicks, 14 handballs
A cheap rookie for a fantasy team.

Shannon Hurn: 14 possessions
A fantasy player to consider, missed a lot of last year with injury.

Chris Masten: 7 kicks, 15 handballs, 5 tackles, 2 frees for
Looks like a fantasy bargain that many will sign in 2009.

Mark Nicoski: 28 possessions
He was supposed to play like this when he was at a cheap price last year.

Tom Swift: 5 kicks, 9 handballs
Good numbers and is an option for the bench of a fantasy team.

AFL Fantasy News: Nick Malceski

Will star if the knee is right: Simple logic, with Kennelly gone his possessions will have to go somewhere. A healthy Malceski should be the recipient of some of them, and as he is a defender in fantasy games and also has an affordable price he would be a good choice for AFL fantasy teams.

Source: The Age
Malceski set to take over where Kennelly left off

"I'm yet to speak to the coaches about how Tadhg leaving will impact on me," Malceski said. "We've got Rhyce Shaw who will play that sort of role, running from half-back. We've also got Marty Mattner, who can do that job. Tadhg was a really important player for us. His leadership was good for us and he'll be sorely missed. But hopefully between me, Marty and Rhyce we can fill in that gap that he's left.

"There's also Craig Bolton and Leo Barry who can play that running role sometimes."

What About This Team, They Were Hurt Last Year

The best way to find undervalued fantasy players in SuperCoach and DreamTeam is to look for players that missed a large portion of, or all of, the previous season. This team lists many players who would not have helped fantasy teams in 2008, but could play a big part in 2009 now they have overcome their injuries. Don't build a team too much like this, and you don't want a ruckmen bench like this and Egan is still hurt so don't sign him, this team is more of a list of players who were out for a lot of last year.

Notes: Tall and mobile, but without a real AFL position at the moment.

2009 fantasy stats change from 2008: Up!
Notes: Very good foot skills, and one of the few small forwards the Lions have.

What About This Team, Oldies But Still Very Good

Here is an unlikely team, but at least few others will have the same idea. When everyone else is going with all the young stars, here is a unique team comprised of players who seem to have been around for a long time. It is the AFL fantasy equivalent of the Sydney Swans, and they have the ability to win but there is an increased risk when it comes to retirements and injuries. In some ways, the fantasy team below can be a warning, as you probably only want a small number of the players listed below on your team.

AFL Fantasy News: Andrew Welsh

Broken leg: Welsh, along with Prismall, is a player from Essendon that should not be on fantasy rosters at the start of the season. Something to plan for, is that during the season those two will step into the Essendon lineup. So if you sign Skipworth, Zaharakis or another secondary onballer there you probably will want to trade them later in the season when Essendon have Welsh and Prismall available.

Source: EssendonFC site
Welsh suffers serious leg injury

Much improved Essendon midfielder and club leader, Andrew Welsh, will miss approximately three months of football after breaking the fibula bone in his right lower leg during today's intra club match at Whitten Oval.

While Knights admitted the Welsh injury was a major blow, he said there were many positives to come out of the game and was impressed by the form of rookie Christian Bock, Bachar Houli, Heath Hocking, Scott Gumbleton and David Hille.

AFL Fantasy News: Matt Maguire

Played a game: While he is cheap, Maguire probably isn't someone that fantasy teams need, although if you have spent all your money and need someone who won’t cost a lot but may play every game he is an option.. His inclusion in the St Kilda team will move other players around, and change their fantasy numbers. Gilbert up forward, as the third tall, might be good for his stats after struggling at times in 2008.

Source: The Age
Modest hit-out suits Saints as Maguire returns

Indeed, with centre half-back Matt Maguire playing a rare game the Saints were more than pleased to be uneventful. This time last year Maguire was beaming as he left the ground after a virtual year out through injury.

"And if Maguire stands up and with Begley and maybe Xavier Clarke back there then we can afford to put (Gilbert) forward. We would like to do it and we are experimenting with it. It is exciting for him, he loves it.

AFL Fantasy News: Andrew Carrazzo

Broken arm: He will possibly be ready for round 1, but he wouldn't be at his best after missing all the preseason training, so try other fantasy players instead of him. Carrazzo may return a bit ahead of schedule, but unless he does he is a player to avoid when building fantasy teams.

Carrazzo winged for six weeks

CARLTON has confirmed ball magnet Andrew Carrazzo will spend six weeks on the sidelines after breaking his left arm in the club's first practice match of the season.

Tasmanian draftee Mitch Robinson provided one shining light, booting four goals and impressing in attack and through the midfield.

NAB Cup AFL Preseason Teams - West Coast v Collingwood

West Coast
(from) Daniel Kerr, Mark Nicoski, Chad Fletcher, Matt Priddis, Chris Masten, Mark Seaby, Tom Swift, Eric Mackenzie, Josh Kennedy, Tim Houlihan, Dean Cox, Quinten Lynch, Darren Glass, Shannon Hurn, Ben McKinley, Matt Spangher, Will Schofield, Andrew Embley, Tony Notte, Pat McGinnity, Brett Jones, Will Sullivan, Brent Staker, Beau Wilkes, Ashley Arrowsmith, Ryan Davis, Liam Bedford, Lewis Stevenson, Adam Cockie

Collingwood
(from) Leon Davis, Alan Didak, Nick Maxwell, Harry O’Brien, Jack Anthony, Scott Pendlebury, Shane O’Bree, Shannon Cox, Dale Thomas, Anthony Corrie, Leigh Brown, Nathan Brown, Dayne Beams, Martin Clarke, Cameron Wood, Ben Reid, Sharrod Wellingham, Steele Sidebottom, Tarkyn Lockyer, Josh Fraser, Ben Johnson, Danny Stanley, Ryan Cook, Brent Macaffer, Chris Dawes, Travis Cloke, Simon Prestigiacomo, Dane Swan, Heath Shaw

What fantasy coaches want to watch for:
Swift, if he is as good as Hill and Rich but an nearly half the price in fantasy games, it might make sense to sign him.
Hurn, he was supposed to have an expanded role last year but didn't do a lot and then was injured and out for the rest of the season, with his long kicking he has the potential to star in SuperCoach.
Sullivan, to save money he could be a candidate for the 4th ruck spot on fantasy teams, so see how he has progressed as he could be a good signing as the Eagles have less ruck depth than many other clubs.
Masten, if he gets 20 possessions here it should mean he is a bargain fantasy signing.

Macaffer, he could be a bargain if he can get a spot in the Collingwood side.
Sidebottom, none of the new players to the AFL are guaranteed fantasy players, but Sidebottom with all his skills is close to that and fantasy coaches will expect him to make them some money quickly.
Beams, another draftee and someone who could help fantasy teams if the Magpies put him in the middle to replace Burns.
Johnson, it has been a while since he was a popular fantasy player, usually as his kicking can be a tad off he is more suited to Dream Team.
Corrie, the Magpies have the right system to make small forwards into fantasy stars so Corrie could be among the goals and possessions.

What About This Team, No Panic Before Round 1

If you are worried about the computers overloading and the fantasy games shutting down in the last hours before the round 1 lockout, and that has happened before, simply build your team around the four teams who are officially announced in full before the fantasy round starts. This season it will be Richmond, Carlton, Hawthorn and Geelong. You can actually build a team for SuperCoach that is loaded with stars, that uses only those four teams. The below example takes the idea to the extreme, as even the cheaper bench players are from those teams.

With Franklin, Richardson, Corey, Judd, Bartel, Mackie and Hodge there is a lot of star power here, and the fantasy coach with this team can laugh it up if the computers go down.

The Fans Say You Need Ablett

In a survey on the Herald Sun site, Gary Ablett is the clear choice for the most valuable player in SuperCoach. While every fantasy team could use him, you don't need to sign him right now. Every year, whoever is the highest-priced fantasy player has dropped a bit in price over the first few weeks of the season. Last year, Bartel nearly halved in price and became a mid-season bargain to buy. So think about getting Ablett, but maybe a couple of months into the season when he is more affordable.

From the Herald Sun:

Who is the most valuable player in SuperCoach?

Gary Ablett 44%
Luke Hodge 22%
Dean Cox 20%
Nick Riewoldt 5%
Matthew Pavlich 6%
