AFL Fantasy News: Trent Cotchin

Leg/foot injuries: Last year, Cotchin was a fantasy player that was traded for during the season. In 2009, he may miss an early game or two and that would be a problem for fantasy coaches. Maybe a good tactic, if you really want Cotchin on your team even if he isn't named for round 1, would be to have a bench midfielder play in round 1, someone like Rich or Hartlett, and have Cotchin on the bench as that would save a trade. If he was going to miss 4 or 5 games, Cotchin could be someone that is traded into a fantasy team for a player that has made a bit of money in the opening rounds.

Richmond Tigers to take safe path with Cotchin

Cotchin, 18, is yet to resume full training because of achilles tendon and calf problems and has already been ruled out of early NAB Cup participation, which begins for the Tigers on February 15 against Fremantle in Perth.

Two "new" faces ready to resurrect their careers are Mark Coughlan and Andrew Raines, who are both likely to play against the Dockers next month.

AFL Fantasy News: Aaron Edwards

Club-imposed suspension: You will not want Edwards on fantasy teams when the season starts, he won't be playing. You probably don't won't to consider him later in the season either, as he hasn't been a great fantasy player for the Kangaroos.

Source: AFL site
Roos act after Edwards driving incident

NORTH Melbourne forward Aaron Edwards will not play an AFL game before round five of the home and away season after being caught speeding and then refusing an alcohol test.

Edwards played four games for West Coast in 2005 and 26 for North in 2007-08, but was sidelined for most of last season when he broke his leg in a game in round six.

The 30 Rule TBBOSFFTAA

You can decide if 30 is the right number, maybe it is 29 and maybe it is 31. The idea is that to avoid injuries, and retirements, don't sign anyone over 30 for your fantasy team.

Older players take longer to recover from injuries. Older players can also hit a time in their career when their skills, or physical ability, suddenly fall away.

This isn't something that is easy to follow, as a lot of the big superstars of the AFL are in the veteran category and over the age suggested here.

One Injury Away From Fantasy Footy Stardom TBBOSFFTAA

There are players at every club with the potential for stats, but are stuck behind the incumbent at their position. Be ready to trade for them if there is an injury to the player they are behind, as they will start playing more games or will have an increased role in the team.

In 2008, with Scott West out it allowed Cross and Boyd to step up their games. When McIntosh hurt his knee, it was the opportunity that Hale needed to star. Hale didn't actually take McIntosh's ruck spot, but as Petrie moved out of the forward line and into the ruck it left Hale as the primary target up forward for the Kangaroos.

Natural Career Progression, Ruckmen TBBOSFFTAA

First year, a stick figure in the VFL, or equivalent, reserves. Second year, getting stronger but still playing mostly in the lower league, the VFL, SANFL, WAFL, etc. Third year, getting backup minutes for his AFL club. Fourth year, playing enough minutes to be a starter on fantasy teams, often has a solid price rise during the season.

Of course there are always exceptions to this idea.

Terrible AFL Player, Great Fantasy AFL Player TBBOSFFTAA

Ever AFL club has at least one player like this, some little scrawny guy who seems to get all his kicks from jogging up behind teammates and then asking for a handball, they then kick the ball erratically down the field.

If they do the above many times a game, they are great for Dream Team, if they kick the ball a long way or can cut down on their erratic kicking then they can also be great for SuperCoach.

Injured Last Year, Fantasy Stars This Year TBBOSFFTAA

A simple idea that most know. The player misses all or most of the previous season, so their opening fantasy price for the new season is low and they are a can't miss bargain.

Nick Stevens, Troy Simmonds, Justin Koschitzke, they have all been recent examples of this. Everyone bought them, and either had a very good player at a cheap price for the entire season or they made a good profit when they sold them during the season.

Natural Career Progression, Key Position Players TBBOSFFTAA

First year, a third tall that is experimented with at both ends of the field, playing few minutes per game at AFL level. Second year, their AFL club has decided which end of the ground they are suited to but still play a minor role. Third year, their physical strength is catching up to their height, and they can have some big games for stats but also a few poor ones. Fourth year, a key part of the team and a fantasy star.

Of course there are always exceptions to this idea.

How To Build, Buying Bargains First TBBOSFFTAA

Forget about the actual numbers, just go through all the players and find those that seem a but undervalued. One way to do this is to look at the players around another player in a price range, often a quality player will jump out as being undervalued compared to those at a similar price.

AFL Fantasy News: Tom Collier

Bigger Lions: When the Lions were winning premierships they were much bigger and stronger than most of the other teams. Collier is a very versatile player and with added strength it could mean he will be used as a tall defender. There is a spot available on the Lions at that position, so Collier may become a fantasy option if he plays ahead of someone like Henderson , Roe, Notting or Clouston.

Source: Herald Sun
Lions lesser lights lift to get on board

Second-year utility Tom Collier has added 7kg of muscle to his athletic frame.

Even tagger Troy Selwood has bulked up considerably.

Your 4th Ruckman Won't Be Playing TBBOSFFTAA

If everything goes to plan, you won't need to make any trades involving ruckmen and if one of your starters is out for a game then your backup, or 3rd, ruckman can play that week.

That makes the 4th ruckman a bit of a luxury item, if a useful amount of money has been spent on them. Going cheap with the 4th ruckman, possibly a rookie player, means more money to spend on the ruckmen who will actually be starting for your fantasy team.

Natural Career Progression, Small Players TBBOSFFTAA

First year, a midfielder used off the bench, or a few more minutes per game when played in a pocket at either end of the field. Second year, playing a lot more minutes in whatever role they have. Third year, getting in the middle more but often as a tagger. Fourth year, a superstar for stats in the midfield.

Just by playing in their first year, they can have a useful fantasy price increase. When they cement a spot in their AFL side, they are again a bargain in fantasy and their price will go up that year. The year they go from part-time midfielder to star onballer produces another year when the fantasy price is a lot higher at the end of the season than it was at the beginning.

Of course there are always exceptions to this idea.

Read The Messages, But Keep Quiet In Leagues TBBOSFFTAA

Ignore this if you are competing in a league against your friends, family, colleagues or sporting teammates.

In a fantasy league when you compete against a bunch of strangers, there isn't a lot to be gained by talking. The best way to shut a big mouth on the league message board is to beat them by a few 100 points when you play them.

By reading what others say, you can learn sometimes about who they are going to trade for or how many trades they have left.

Target Round 20 For A Weekly Prize TBBOSFFTAA

People want to win in round 19, so they get a week off in the round 20 league games. They also want to save trades, if they have any left, to finish strongly in the overall ranking and also the league Grand Finals. So if you want to target a specific round to win, try round 20.

You could even target that round for when you use your last couple of trades. A round win brings in a nice prize, so it is worth going for it.

How To Build, Sign Possible Captains First TBBOSFFTAA

Another one of many ways to construct a fantasy team. Pick a few players that you really want as captain, 2 to 4 is probably a useful number. Then fill the rest of the team with players at lower prices.

Tanking First Week Of Finals TBBOSFFTAA

A fantasy team needs 3 wins in the finals to win the league, but not all the wins have to be consecutive if you finish in the top 4 of the league.

In week 1 of the fantasy finals, a fantasy team could have an injury or suspension to an important player. Instead of trading, losing can be just as useful as the team will be improved the next week.

You don't try to lose, you just don't use up all your trade options and money doing everything to win when a loss isn't the end of the season in the league.

The Star From Last Year Is Too Expensive TBBOSFFTAA

Watch Jonathan Brown dominate for stats one year, then lose $200,000 of value to start the next season. See Bartel win everything, and help win fantasy leagues, and then during the next season his price at one point was a third off his opening value. A few years ago it was Luke Hodge who started at an astronomical price, before losing a lot of it when the new season started.

Maybe wait a month before considering the best player from last season, or even until the second half of the season. It could save the team a lot of money. They are nearly always too expensive for round 1, and for the cost of the most expensive player you could instead buy two players with the potential to be just as good.

Kicks Are Worth More Than Handballs TBBOSFFTAA

Some players get 25 possessions a game, others get 20. If a player has 15 kicks and 5 handballs, it is likely that they will have a better fantasy game than the player with 15 handballs and 10 kicks.

Players who handball are also less likely to be getting a lot of marks, as most players will look to kick after taking a mark.

There are players who can get over 20 handballs in a game, so they can still be fantasy superstars, but it would just be better if it was 20 kicks.

AFL Fantasy News: Will Sullivan

Rookie ruckman to play: Even when Naitanui is healthy, the depth in the ruck for the Eagles isn't great. Although it doesn't have to be if Dean Cox is playing. Adding Will Sullivan to a fantasy team could be a good tactic. He is very cheap, at the rookie price. He is also only an injury or two away from having to play for the Eagles.

Source: The West Australian
Top Eagles to miss Magpie cup clash

Premiership players Daniel Kerr, Adam Hunter, Beau Waters, Sam Butler, Ashley Hansen and Andrew Embley are likely to be rested, as are youngsters Chris Masten, Mitch Brown and Brad Ebert.

Regardless, rookie-listed ruckman Will Sullivan is likely to be given an opportunity to share the ruck duties with Mark Seaby.

AFL Fantasy News: Ryan Murphy

Another chance for Murphy: In 2005 and 2006 Murphy had a goals to behind ration of around 3 to 1, he was one of the most accurate players around. His game has fallen apart, as has his team, but if he can find his previous form he will be an asset for fantasy teams.

Source: The West Australian
Murphy has plenty to prove for Dockers

In the second half of 2006, a then 21-year-old Murphy illustrated why Fremantle parted with their first selection, No. 12 overall, in the 2003 national draft to acquire the lanky talent from Gippsland.

With the Dockers sweeping all before them, Murphy stepped up and became an important factor in their finals surge, kicking bags of five and four goals in a seven-game stretch in which he booted 16 majors.

AFL Fantasy News: Andrew Walker

Shoulder injury: Walker was a good player for fantasy teams to have in the second half of the 2008 season. Once again he could be a player that has a delayed start to the season, and won't be a useful player to have on initial fantasy rosters, but wait to see what they say on Tuesday about the injury.

Source: The Age
New shoulder blow for Walker

The highly rated 22-year-old was doing tackling drills on Friday when he injured his right shoulder — the same shoulder that required surgery a year ago, forcing him to miss 15 games.

Carlton football operations manager Steven Icke said Walker had scans on Friday afternoon and would visit his surgeon on Tuesday for a full assessment.

AFL News - The Currie Man

Everitt is gone, so the Swans have to decide who is the tag-team partner for Jolly in the ruck.

From the Sydney site: Giving them Currie

While Lewis Roberts-Thomson filled in at key times in the ruck last season, international rookie Mike Pyke, Jesse White and Currie all have claims on the role this year.

Currie showed he can be a dangerous forward option as well, with 10 goals in three reserves finals last September including three against Belconnen in a thrilling one-point grand final triumph.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

There are always plenty of hitouts when the Swans play, and Currie should get his share as he is very tall like Jolly. He won't need to do more than get a few hitouts and handballs for his fantasy price to jump, and if he adds a few marks and goals then he will be a bargain to have on the fantasy bench to start the year.

AFL News - Wonaeamirri Faster In 2009

Austin Wonaeamirri was one of the best stories that Melbourne had in 2008, and it seems that he will be fitter and faster this season.

From the Melbourne site: Wonaeamirri no one-hit wonder

"This pre-season I've dropped a bit of weight which has helped me train harder. Last year I was playing at 77 or 78 kg I think, but I'm at 74 kg now.”

Having broken through for 18 games in his first season, Wonaeamirri proved to be one of the steals of the rookie draft with his exciting play one of the bright spots in an otherwise dreary year for the Dees.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

For fantasy AFL games, Wonaeamirri may actually be a one-hit wonder. He was at the cheapest rookie price last season, and will be at a higher price in 2009.

While Wonaeamirri may do enough, or even a bit more in stats, compared to his price this season it is unlikely that he will have a large increase in stats so there are better players to sign.

AFL News - Walker To Play Preseason Games

He won't be able to replace Luke Jericho, but Taylor Walker should produce a lot of goals.

From Fox Sports: Adelaide coach Neil Craig is set to unleash the talented Taylor Walker

"Young Taylor Walker has been exceptional on the track and he's ready to have a go, whereas last year I didn't feel he was quite ready. Nick Gill's been able to stay on the track at the moment and we know what (Jason) Porplyzia can do up there.

"James Sellar, I couldn't have asked him to do any more than he's doing at the moment and Kurt Tippett, we've got big hopes for him as well."

AFL Fantasy Impact:

It has been mentioned a few times recently, Walker could be a cheap fantasy forward to have on the bench who could have a huge year if the Crows decide he is their new full forward.

AFL News - Hasleby Recovered

The Dockers went from being the oldest to having a team of few veteran stars, they will get some help this season with Paul Hasleby ready to play again.

From The Western Australian: Hasleby on track to tackle Tigers

Triple Ross Glendinning medallist Paul Hasleby is set to be unleashed against Richmond in Fremantle’s NAB Cup opener at Subiaco Oval on February 15.

Hasleby, who is training without limitation, is on track to play against the Tigers in his first game of football since rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament in the 2008 pre-season competition.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

His price is expected to be very affordable, due to his injury in 2008, so Hasleby could be on many fantasy teams in 2009. The Dockers lost a lot of experience and stats from the middle, and Hasleby is a proven player there who should get the stats that McManus, Black and others had last season.

AFL News - McCarthy Following The Pendlebury Career Path At Collingwood

He had surgery but John McCarthy should be ready when the season starts.

From the Herald Sun: Magpie lands on his feet

Older heads at the club rate McCarthy highly and despite finishing the season looking very much at home at senior, he is the last person to be getting ahead of himself.

"Everyone is fresh and there are not too many injured boys, so I definitely don't think I'm any certainty to play Round 1. But it would be fantastic if I could," he said.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Pendlebury seemed a bit expensive when his second fantasy season started, but he was actually a bargain and made a lot of money and had a huge amount of stats. John McCarthy could be the same type of fantasy player in 2009. John McCarthy will be priced at a similar value to Cale Morton, David Myers and Chris Masten, all should be considered for fantasy AFL teams.

AFL News - Kangaroos Can Go Very Tall Up Forward

The Kangaroos can put a lot of tall targets in their forward line, but the problem for them is getting the ball down there enough.

From the AFL site: All Hale North's key forward

The Queenslander's attacking role has been fast-tracked by Hamish McIntosh as chief ruckman, the development of understudy Todd Goldstein and the versatility of vice-captain Drew Petrie.

The forward line's wealth of options extend to VFL grand final hero Josh Smith, key position prospect Lachlan Hansen and elevated rookie Michael Wundke – "a beautiful kick" – all part of the shuffle created by Shannon Grant and Nathan Thompson's retirement.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Hale was great for fantasy teams last year when McIntosh was out. That moved Petrie into the ruck and Hale was the main target up forward. With everyone healthy now, it could get a bit crowded, although Petrie could alos be used at centre half back where he can also bring in great stats.

Hale should keep his ruck fantasy position eligibility, as could Petrie, and of course McIntosh and Goldstein will also be fantasy ruckmen.

AFL News - Hansen With A Different Role For Eagles

No longer part of their leadership group, Hansen may also be in a different spot on the ground in 2009.

From The Age/WA Today: Eagles plan to soar again

With Hansen coming off knee surgery, his appearance in the NAB Cup clash with the Magpies on February 7 is doubtful.

With a hint at a role further up the ground for Hansen, the 25 year-old said despite the Eagles lowly 15th placed finish last year, finals football was the goal in 2009.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

His poor year in 2008 means his fantasy price will be more affordable now, but he will also have competition for playing time from Kennedy and a healthy Mitch Brown.

Thursday, January 22, 2009

AFL News - Old Saints Return

The Saints need some more strength and fight, and have a couple of veterans who might be able to provide that.

From the Herald Sun: Key Saints on track, primed for NAB Cup defence

Good news for Saints fans is tagger Steven Baker, who played only two senior games last year because of a knee injury, has rejoined the main training group.

Defender Matt Maguire, restricted to only four appearances in 2008 because of a series of foot and leg injuries, is on his way to full fitness and the chance to finally play his 100th game.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

They won't be expensive fantasy players, due to their 2008 seasons, but Baker and Maguire don't really have the type of roles that are beneficial to fantasy points.

AFL News - Hurley And Other Draftees Ready For Essendon

Essendon expect to have everyone except Prismall available for round 1 of the real games, but won't have a lot of players to choose from when the preseason games begin.

From the AFL site: Bombers will be missing key players in NAB Cup

“Michael Hurley is probably in line for selection, and David Zaharakas – who’s had a bit of a groin complaint – is a good chance (as is) Tyson Slattery, who we took later in the draft.

“At this stage I would have thought only Prismall (will miss). We’re planning for Alwyn to play the last one or two practice matches and I have said if he can complete two games, I’m happy to go with him in round one if his knees feel fine and the medical staff are fine.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Both Hurley and Zaharakis should be options for fantasy teams in 2009. Hurley will be the better choice, as there are few fantasy defenders at his low price. Zaharakis will be cheaper than fantasy midfielders Rich or Hartlett, but there won't be a huge price difference.

Wednesday, January 21, 2009

AFL News - Moran To the Adelaide Back Line

The ruck spot at Adelaide has been very unsettled with injuries, retirements and plenty of player movement. The 2009 team has several versatile ruckmen to choose from, and if they are not playing in the ruck they could be used up forward, while Moran may also be used in the back line.

From Fox Sports: Nathan Bassett's retirement leaves gap for Crow Brad Moran

The versatile tall debuted in the round 16 Showdown against Port Adelaide and shot to prominence with four goals in just his third game, leading Adelaide to an eight-point win over Carlton in round 18.

"We've got Griffo and Ivan Maric as good, solid ruckman, plus Kurt Tippett up front as well. In an ideal world it would be me playing defence but it's not always going to be that way."

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Maric and Moran will be close in fantasy price, Griffin will be quite a bit cheaper than those two. Tippett probably is ruck eligible this year too when it comes to fantasy position.

AFL News - Ballantyne Might Be Ready When Season Starts

The Dockers drafted Hayden Ballantyne to step right into the side and replace Jeff Farmer up forward, but a wrist injury might delay the start of his AFL career.

From the AFL site: Freo's new chums sizzle in sun

Rhys Palmer, Steven Dodd, Ryan Crowley and Daniel Gilmore are training the house down ahead of the opening NAB Cup game against Richmond at Subiaco Oval in less than a month but Fremantle does have some injury concerns.

Hayden Ballantyne, who kicked 75 goals in the WAFL and won the 2008 Sandover Medal, is facing a race against time to be ready for the start of the season after wrist surgery.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Hayden Ballantyne looks like a very good fantasy bench option as a forward. Very low in fantasy price, stronger and more experienced than other newcomers, and he plays a position where the Dockers need help.

Monday, January 19, 2009

AFL News - Swallow Back in Contention For A Spot With Kangaroos

Swallow went backwards in 2008, but is a good chance to become a regular player again in 2009.

From the Herald Sun: Roo plans second coming

Swallow featured in 12 games in a solid 2006 debut season before playing every match in 2007, including the preliminary final loss to Port Adelaide.

"I played the first three and Dean (coach Dean Laidley) just said, 'Go back and get a bit more form' and they wanted me to play a bit more as an outside midfielder and work on my running," Swallow said.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Very cheap in fantasy AFL this season, so Swallow should be a player that fantasy coaches think about signing.

AFL News - Brad Symes Bad Times

A lot of Crows are injury-prone, but they usually hurt themselves on the football field and not on a speed bump.

From the AFL site: Symes' injures hands after fall from vehicle

ADELAIDE onballer Brad Symes will be out of action for up to eight weeks after breaking bones in both hands in a post-training mishap.

Symes, 23, accepted a ride on the back of a vehicle last Friday instead of walking the distance from Max Basheer Reserve to the club’s temporary change rooms on the Western side of AAMI Stadium.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

This could delay his 2009 season, and allow someone like Dangerfield or Davis to grab a spot on the team. Those two players won’t cost a lot in AFL fantasy.

Sunday, January 18, 2009

AFL News - Cooney Could Struggle With Extra Pressure

The Brownlow Medal does mean a player has the pressure to continue at that level of play, while having to deal with more tagging.

From the Herald Sun: Adam Cooney tackles Brownlow blues

Cooney is still two weeks away from proper running after knee surgery in October.

He says he copped plenty of attention last year from close-checking taggers so he knows what lies ahead.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

The Bulldogs do have other stars in the midfield, so opposition teams won't be able to target Cooney with taggers as that would allow Cross, Boyd and others to run free.

Cooney probably isn't in the top 5 when it comes to the most expensive fantasy midfielders, so he can be signed for round 1.

AFL News - International Rookie Could Play Soon

The Swans seemed to be impressed with Brendan Murphy, but he could have competition from Mike Pyke if a senior spot opens up during the season.

From The Age: Rookie Swan Pyke has a bright future and a remarkable past

"He's coming along in leaps and bounds," says Darren Jolly, who is working with Pyke on his rucking skills. "He does his homework, asks lots of questions, he's fit, strong and is picking the game up quickly."

"Absolutely," Jolly says. "I'd put him in first round if I had the chance. He still needs to work on marking and kicking but everything else is coming along really well."

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Maybe more of a chance to play in the second half of the season, due to the new rookie rules. Pyke could be a cheap option for a fantasy team's 4th ruck spot.

AFL News - One Last Run At The Cup For The Swans

Kennelly will play one more year and retire. Barry, Hall, O'Loughlin, Crouch and Kirk are among the oldest players in the AFL. It looks like this is the last year that their premiership window will be open, and it is only open a little bit.

From The Age: Kennelly knows he won't be back

Kennelly will return to Ireland at the end of the season - after 10 years away from his family and Gaelic football - to follow in the footsteps of his late father, Tim, in that code. After two of the most frustrating AFL seasons of his career, years punctuated by injuries, Kennelly hopes he can be fit enough to enjoy his final season in the game.

After missing just six matches of the 121 the Swans played between 2002 and 2006, a knee injury in 2007, then shoulder and groin problems last year, limited the 27-year-old to just 12 of the 47 games the club played in the past two seasons.

From the AFL site: O'Keefe wants to play out career with the Swans

O'Keefe was adamant the Swans would remain a legitimate finals and premiership contender.

With premiership winning forward Nick Davis delisted and key forwards Barry Hall and Michael O'Loughlin over 30, O'Keefe was looking for youngsters Patrick Veszpremi, Ed Barlow and Heath Grundy to step up this year.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Kirk and Kennelly should be good selections for fantasy teams. Barry Hall, he can get goals or suspensions, so he is a risk.

O'Keefe should maintain his high fantasy points, his stats at Sydney should be more than they would have been if he was traded.

Among the younger players mentioned, Barlow should be cheap but is still not a regular in the Sydney side. Veszpremi might be priced a bit higher than expected, but he could still make a bit of money for fantasy teams. Grundy seems to have been at the Swans for a long time without getting a consistent position, probably better to wait and see what his role is before signing him.

AFL News - Taylor Walker News

Adelaide will have a different forward line in 2009, although who is actually in what position is unknown now. The Crows have a lot of tall forwards to sort through, and also need a small forward or two.

From the Adelaide site: Jarrhan plans for Jack attack

"(Assistant coach) David Noble has taken over the forwards [group] this year. Nobes has added some more flexibility to the forward line and I think you’ll see a bit more flair this year too, especially with guys like Tex (Walker), Kurt Tippett and also James Sellar, who has been training really well," Jacky said.

"Richie Douglas played that small forward role well last year, but with a few boys from last year leaving he’ll get a go in the midfield along with Porpa (Porplyzia), so there’s definitely a spot there.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Jacky says there is a spot available for him in the Adelaide forward line, he is cheap in fantasy games so that is a situation to watch.

Walker and Sellar will be cheap enough to have on a fantasy bench, see what they do in the preseason games, although last year Sellar was good in preseason and then did very little in the real games.

AFL News - Coughlan Comeback News

It has been a long time since Mark Coughlan played a game, and his next AFL game isn't far away now.

From Fox Sports: Richmond midfielder Mark Coughlan's comeback steps up a Cog

Mark Coughlan, the club's 2003 best-and-fairest, is on track for a comeback in the Tigers' opening NAB Cup match against Fremantle on February 15 at Subiaco.

Since his best-and-fairest win, Coughlan has played just 44 of a possible 88 games after back-to-back knee reconstructions.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

He was supposed to be a fantasy bargain last year, as it was reported at the time that he was ready to play, but that didn't happen. Coughlan will still be at a cheap fantasy price this year again, but the Tigers have added several other midfield players who are now ahead of him.

AFL News - McDonald To Lead Melbourne

James McDonald is one of the few players at Melbourne with leadership ability and respect on and off the field, so he is a solid choice as captain.

From the AFL site: McDonald to skipper Demons

“To be named captain of the oldest club in the land is a prestigious honour. To be able to follow on from names such as Smith, Barassi, Flower, Lyon and more recently Neitz will be a great challenge, which I am really looking forward to.”

McDonald was appointed captain following a vote where each player awarded a 5-4-3-2-1 vote for the players who displayed the greatest leadership qualities.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

This doesn't really show that a youth movement has started there yet, so fantasy coaches may not want to sign a lot of their young players. James McDonald will get possessions and tackles, but for the same expected fantasy price a younger player like N van Berlo, D Harris or T Boak could be signed.

AFL News - Naitanui Has Knee Surgery

Naitanui had his knee problem attended to and while he will miss some games he should help the Eagles during the 2009 season.

From The West Australian: Eagles put Wirrpanda off limits for All-Stars

Meanwhile, boom West Coast teenager Nick Natainui had successful surgery on his troublesome left knee yesterday.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Naitanui can still be a fantasy ruckman on the bench when the season starts. Seaby could be the backup to Dean Cox in the early rounds, or the Eagles could use Lynch in that role.

Thursday, January 15, 2009

AFL News - McVeigh, Winderlich Update

The Bombers will be missing several players when the preseason games start, but most of them should be available for round 1.

From the Herald Sun: Essendon rookie Christian Bock a long-term prospect

Bock is not on his own with his last wish, with as many as 22 Bombers having been on modified training programs.

Mark McVeigh is close to rejoining the main group after breaking his toe, back victims Darcy Daniher and Jason Winderlich won't feature in the NAB Cup, while Alwyn Davey is also unlikely.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Davey won't be a bargain fantasy player in 2009, although if he is a fantasy forward that Essendon also play in the midfield he should be worth his expected price. Winderlich, a fantasy midfielder, might be around the same price as Davey but Winderlich has the potential for a lot more possessions in the middle. McVeigh should be someone to sign, as his expected price is lower than the stats he can bring in.

Christian Bock may actually be useful for fantasy teams, but only if the other 3 ruckmen on the fantasy team are playing regular AFL. By signing Bock, or a similar fantasy player, you save money that can be used in more important positions on the fantasy team. Although when it comes to the cheap rookie-listed ruckmen, someone like J Tippett, B Connelly or J Spencer might be a better choice.

AFL News - Another Tall Option For Cats Up Forward

Geelong went big a couple of drafts ago, and maybe this season McKenna or one of the Simpsons will make their debut for the Cats.

From The Geelong Advertiser: Young Cat Dan McKenna would play in any position just to get a game

"I want to train well and play round one of the NAB Cup, which will come from working hard. I want to play one senior game, and if I get a spot, I want to play well and not give it up," McKenna said.

McKenna played 19 matches in the Cats' VFL side in 2008, booting 10 goals in the opening half of the season before switching to defence.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

If injuries hit a couple of their veterans, McKenna could get a chance at full back. He could also be a chance for minutes at full forward, although he is behind Hawkins and other Cats for that spot. Maybe it won't happen in 2009, but both Hawkins and McKenna could be used together out of the goal-square.

AFL News - Docker Duffield Hurt

A broken hand will delay Paul Duffield's 2009 season.

From The West Australian: Unlucky break sidelines Duffield

Duffield will be sidelined for up to a month, making him an unlikely starter for the February 15 game against the Tigers at Subiaco Oval.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

The Dockers used a lot of draft picks on players that could be competing with Duffield for a spot in the team. With Duffield out of action, one of those players may be able to cement a spot, and could be cheap in fantasy games.

AFL News - Simon Hogan Hulking Up

He has been overshadowed by other young players at Geelong, like J Selwood, but 2009 should be the year when Simon Hogan makes a contribution for the Cats.

From The Geelong Advertiser: Hogan to join his heroes

Weighing 12 kilograms more than when he was drafted, he said he was enjoying tackling his first injury-free pre-season since arriving at Kardinia Park three years ago.

Hogan, who was named an emergency several times last year, said he was determined to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Brent Prismall.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

The Cats are never sure if players like Byrnes and Varcoe are going to be successful or fail in the big games. There is a chance that the Cats look for another small, quick forward and Hogan could move ahead of those two on the Geelong depth chart. If Hogan does that, he will be a good cheap fantasy player that can make fantasy teams some money.

AFL News - Shaun Higgins And His Injuries

At least he isn't Tom Williams, but Shaun Higgins hasn't been much healthier than his Bulldog teammate during his career. Higgins is better now, and while not the power forward that they need he should still be very useful for them.

From the Herald Sun: Young Western Bulldog Shaun Higgins in his best shape

SEASON one: dislocated elbow. Season two: shoulder surgery. Season three: ankle reconstruction.

While he has played predominantly as a half-forward to date, Higgins is hoping more midfield opportunities open up this season.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

The Bulldogs can produce numerous quality fantasy forwards who also get midfield minutes, and associated stats. Higgins should finally join players like Giansiracusa and Murphy who can do a lot for fantasy teams. Higgins' rise in stats could mean that someone like Eagleton, or maybe B Johnson or Akermanis, could start to slip.

AFL News - A New Prestigiacomo

Prestigiacomo could be very important for Collingwood at full back in 2009, as he is healthy again, and they may even use him in other spots.

From the Collingwood site: Veterans ready for 2009

The coaches had Prestigiacomo positioned at the start of the drill on John Anthony in the forward line. The veteran’s closing speed hindered Anthony’s ability to get to the ball and was thus held goalless for the first half.

Prestigiacomo continued his defensive play on the wing taking opponent’s Dane Swan and Alan Toovey at various stages. A new-look Prestigacomo was calling for the ball for the entire drill and looked comfortable with taking an outstretched mark on the lead from teammate Dale Thomas.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

He is usually the type of player you don't want on a fantasy team, but see what he does in preseason and how the Magpies use him. He is always very affordable in fantasy games, as his spoils don't bring in fantasy points, but if he does get minutes when played more in the action his stats would go up.

AFL News - Raines Back For Richmond

Richmond went searching for experienced players in the offseason, but a couple of their new players may be in the VFL as Raines should return.

From the Richmond site: Raines parts from clouds of '08

Two seasons without missing a game had been followed by a great pre-season where he completed every session and was as fit as he’d ever been.

In round two last year, the Tigers fell to North Melbourne by 41 points and were dealt an extra blow when Raines dislocated his kneecap.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

His injuries in 2008 should mean a lower fantasy price in 2009. Raines is also eligible as a fantasy defender and can bring in the stats that a lot of midfielders do.

AFL News - Hawks Have Options With Croad Out

Hawthorn may not think they have many problems, but Geelong know that when a key defender is out it does make things more difficult. The Cats did draft Taylor to help with Egan out, and the Hawks also have new players who could be used in Croad’s spot.

From the AFL site: Depth the key, say Hawks

"We've just got to deal with that (Croad's injury) as best as we can and guys will get an opportunity to step up and go to the next level, hopefully," Gilham said.

"Guys like Ryan Schoenmakers and Jordan Lisle, particularly in the backline … I definitely think they will get their opportunity in the NAB Cup."

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Fantasy teams could make a bit of money early in the season with the player that Hawthorn uses in Croad's spot. When Croad returns, then sell the player for a profit. Schoenmakers and Lisle will be very cheap as they are new players to the AFL, Thorp and Dowler will also be very affordable in AFL fantasy games.

AFL News - Hooper Not Fine, And Fined

It might be a while before Hooper is close to playing for the Lions again.

From the Herald Sun: Lions to fine Rhan Hooper $40,000

BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss has shown disciplinary breaches will not be tolerated by fining wayward forward Rhan Hooper $40,000. Hooper, who faced the sack after multiple contract breaches, had no choice but to accept the reduced contract to salvage his career.

Voss, who trained with the 21-year-old Hooper during the Christmas holidays, has shown he will be as uncompromising a coach as he was a player when it comes to disciplinary issues.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Definitely someone that fantasy coaches can't have on their rosters when the season starts. Rockliff is someone who could benefit from this and he is a cheap fantasy forward to have on the bench.

AFL News - Firrito Could See Midfield Minutes

Firrito is a bit undersized for full back, but is often the best option the Kangaroos have. They may try something else in 2009, and Firrito could have a midfield role for some games.

From the AFL site: Pre-season gains give Firrito new stride

Firrito’s pre-season achievements have encouraged him to consider a part-time return to the midfield, where he spent the early portion of his 105 games, but feels he has too much “unfinished business” to vacate the backline completely.

“I’ll play wherever the coach wants me though I’d love to get back up there (in the midfield),” he said. “I still want to play down back because I feel like I play pretty good footy down there.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Not hard to figure out, a player should get a lot more stats in the middle than at full back. It could still be a risk signing Firrito if he is moved into the middle, as he could just as quickly go back to the full back spot for the next game.

If North Melbourne go with a different full back it could hurt their stats. Petrie would be a very capable player there, especially against the biggest full forwards, but that would kill off his fantasy value. Hansen is another option, and it would not be beneficial for his fantasy points either.

There is a small chance that someone like R Tarrant could get into the team as their new full back. As his fantasy price is very low, as long as he plays he can make a fantasy team some money.

AFL News - Cats Need Wojcinski's Pace

The Cats were slow in the Grand Final, and will be reminded about that a lot whenever Wojcinski is mentioned.

From the Herald Sun: The pain of GF omission spurs David Wojcinski

He was the first Cat across the line in yesterday's Pier to Pub swim at Lorne and hopes to start running this week with the view to playing in Round 1.

"I missed pretty much half the year and battled through the second half of the year with that injury and that was a big part of the reason I missed the Grand Final," he said.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

The runs from half back that Wojcinski produces are entertaining, but he hasn't really used that ability to be a great fantasy player. He has been able to produce a few big fantasy games, but nothing consistent. Wojcinski will be at an affordable fantasy price again, but he probably isn't worth signing unless the Cats lose a few of their big stars which would open up more playing time and a bigger role for Wojcinski.

AFL News - Naitanui Injury

It isn't a major problem, but Naitanui's injury will delay the start of his AFL career.

From the AFL site: Eagles lose Naitanui for start of season

WEST Coast prize recruit Nick Naitanui will miss the start of the 2009 season with a knee injury.

Naitanui, snared by the Eagles with pick No.2 in last year's national draft, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee early next week after experiencing soreness as his pre-season training load increased.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

This changes some fantasy AFL plans. He can't be one of the starting ruckmen for fantasy teams, but could still start the season on a fantasy bench.

AFL News - Fosdike Finished

One Swan is gone, Fosdike, but apparently the talk about Kennelly leaving is wrong.

From The Age: Injured Fosdike ready to quit

Fosdike was drafted by the Swans at overall selection No.3 in the 1998 national draft, and the South Australian went on to play 164 senior games with the Swans. As the club continues to blend youth such as Craig Bird, Jarred Moore and Pat Veszpremi into their senior line-up, Fosdike's expected departure will mean that seven members of the 2005 grand final winning team have now left, with Ben Mathews and Nick Davis departing at the end of last season.

One premiership player who isn't going anywhere just yet though is Irishman Tadhg Kennelly, with the club scoffing at a report in an Irish newspaper that the defender had held talks with the Swans earlier this week and was heading home and "return to [County] Kerry full-time within the next two weeks".

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Fosdike shouldn't have been in anyone's planning for 2009 fantasy teams, but maybe someone like Schmidt or Barlow is now a chance to play more. Schmidt can be used by the Swans in a role that Fosdike had before, while Barlow has the height and mobility to be a fantasy star but he wnet backwards in 2008.

AFL News - Carlton Buy Damaged Goods From Fremantle

Tall players and foot ailments are not a good combination, so Carlton could be without Warnock when the regular season commences.

From The Age: Foot injury puts Warnock out for months

CARLTON recruit Robbie Warnock has been sidelined for up to eight weeks with a stress fracture in his foot.

Warnock's setback is further bad news for the Blues, who have Heath Scotland (foot), Brad Fisher (elbow), Adam Bentick (hip) and Adam Hartlett (knee) still recovering.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

In fantasy games, Kreuzer and Cloke have a bit more value with Warnock injured. Kreuzer might be the one to sign, as he will be cheaper and Kreuzer showed great accuracy in front of goal last season as well as the ability to cover a lot of ground when played in the ruck.

AFL News - Leuenberger With Extra Beef

The Lions could have one of the best ruck groups in the AFL, if Charman and Clark can stay healthy and Leuenberger can add some more bulk to compliment his mobility and skills.

From Fox Sports: Brisbane coach Michael Voss has the Lions on the ball early

Brisbane are a tall side and are starting to look as if they can match it physically with any side in the competition.

Matthew Leuenberger (102kg) and Mitch Clark (99kg) have each added 4kg of muscle to their developing frames, while second-year players Lachlan Henderson (95kg) and Tom Collier (86kg) have also benefited from another summer in the gym.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

It may not be long before Leuenberger achieves his "next Dean Cox" potential. Fantasy coaches will want him when he does do it, and can sign him in 2009 at an affordable price.

AFL News - Hawkins Could Reach His Potential In 2009

The Geelong forward line is their weak link, although it is still very capable of kicking a winning score. Hawkins should be able to give them a big target to kick to in the goal-square, which would be useful as Mooney and S Johnson often spend time far from goal.

From the Herald Sun: Geelong Football Club cautious on Tom Hawkins

The 20-year-old played the first 10 games last year before form and then his foot problem kept him out of the senior side for the rest of the season.

Geelong assistant coach Brendan McCartney said Hawkins should play against Adelaide at Telstra Dome on February 21, but the club was wary of not pushing him too hard.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Hawkins should have the edge over Lonergan and other potential marking forwards the Cats may consider. If Hawkins is there in round 1 for the Cats he should be an affordable player for fantasy teams to have.

AFL News - Gilmore Doing More

The Dockers have one huge ruckman, and a couple of smaller options for the backup ruck role. Gilmore could have that role again, Bradley is another option.

From the AFL site: Taz mania as Harvey signals new role

"The ones burning up the track are guys like Steven Dodd, (Garrick) Ibbotson, (Ryan) Crowley and (Daniel) Gilmore.

"Stephen Hill is also holding his own, and guys like Ryan Murphy, (Paul) Duffield and (David) Mundy have undergone a great transition in their bodies, so I would expect a lot of improvement in them."

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Gilmore can bring in a lot of stats as a mobile ruckman, but it all depends on the available minutes. If Gilmore plays in the back line and then goes into the ruck, it would obviously mean more playing time than if he just sits on the bench until he gives Sandilands a rest.

The Dockers have talked about playing Tarrant everywhere before but haven't really done it. Instead he stays forward and kicks the ball out on the full a lot. If they do play him in a Richardson-type of role, his marks and possessions would be a lot higher and Tarrant would be on more fantasy teams in 2009.

AFL News - Bombers To Try A Tall Forward Line

Sheedy always made sure he had size in his forward line and Coach Knights is going to try to go big at a time when most clubs go small. With a lot of games under a roof, the Bombers may be able to make it work.

Here is the height that Coach Knights has on his list. Plenty will be left to the veterans to do, but if Gumbleton can have an injury-free breakout year he could be a difference-maker and get them into the finals.

24 or older, 191cm or taller

Fletcher, Dustin
Lucas, Scott
Lloyd, Matthew
Hille, David
Laycock, Jason

23 or younger, 191cm or taller

Neagle, Jay
Ryder, Patrick
Gumbleton, Scott
Hooker, Cale
Bellchambers, Tom
Daniher, Darcy
Pears, Tayte
Bock, Christian - R
Hurley, Michael
Still, Michael

From the AFL site: Knights's tall order for Bombers

The second-year coach plans to play Matthew Lloyd, Scott Lucas, Jay Neagle and the returning Scott Gumbleton up forward, and to assign other tall timber to the attacking half.

Gumbleton, a 197cm centre half-forward from WA who was pick No.2 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft, has played only five games in two seasons due to injury, but the Bombers says he is sizzling in the pre-season, recently recording a remarkable 15.4 beep test.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Gumbleton and Lucas could be fantasy bargains, while Lloyd is probably good enough to justify his price even in a crowded forward line. Neagle doesn't get a lot of kicks, but sometimes most of them go for goals. At his expected fantasy price, he is just a bit too much to have on a fantasy bench and isn't ging to get enough fantasy points to start, but see what he does in preseason.

AFL News - O'Loughlin Not Ready

The Swans need to be careful with their veterans, and O'Loughlin may miss games at the start of the regular season to make sure he is there for September.

From The Age: Canny veteran O'Loughlin eases back into the pre-season furnace

"Mick is still taking some time, and we're not rushing him," assistant coach John Longmire said. "He had a big operation, and fortunately he's a pretty good touch player. He had a good pre-season last year so he's got a bit of training under his belt. We expect him to just ease into it. We're not going to rush him. He's still a number of weeks away. He's just getting moving now with his running."

Asked who might miss round one, Longmire said: "Mick is probably the only one with a question mark. However, we're still confident."

AFL Fantasy Impact:

O'Loughlin is now a big risk for fantasy teams, due to his age and constant injuries. That might also mean Lewis Johnston will be a good player to have on a fantasy bench in 2009.

There is still plenty of training during the preseason and then the practice matches, so these rankings are going to be updated before the fantasy season starts. The rankings go from who should be the best at the club for fantasy points down to those who are not expected to play a lot in 2009. The "R" indicates a rookie player.

9 Possible Fantasy Bargains For 2009

When the official fantasy prices for next year are released, many bargain-priced players will be there to find and sign. Here are some who are expected to be at affordable prices, compared to the fantasy points they should bring in. They are listed with players who are expected to be similarly priced, but don’t usually get the same stats.

Chad Cornes - Could be at a similar price to M Doughty and J King.

David Myers - Could be at a similar price to L McGuane and S Watt.

Ricky Petterd - Could be at a similar price to M Spangher and M Austin.

Jed Adcock - Could be at a similar price to A Bentick and X Clarke.

Courtney Dempsey - Could be at a similar price to J Russell and R Eddy.

Shaun Higgins - Could be at a similar price to N Fosdike and L Fisher.

Hamish McIntosh - Could be at a similar price to C Wood and S King.

Matthew Bate - Could be at a similar price to M Campbell and S Welsh.

Scott Lucas - Could be at a similar price to R Hooper and H Playfair.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Scott Lucas

Scott Lucas: It seems that he could be very cheap in AFL fantasy games, so if he is kicking his usual super-goals in the preseason competition it is probably a good move to sign him for the fantasy season. The Bombers will still need their veterans to kick a winning score in 2009 and while Lloyd is also someone to consider signing he won't be a possible fantasy forward bargain like Lucas.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Tayte Pears

Tayte Pears: Michael Hurley was a possible inclusion in next season's SuperCoach team that was posted previously, and his teammate Pears could also be a useful fantasy defender to have in 2009. Tayte Pears should be an inexpensive player, and he showed a couple of times in 2008 that he can get 15 possessions in a game. See what type of role the Bombers use him in during preseason games, unless he is out of the action at full back in the role Mal Michael played he should be a bargain fantasy defender.

AFL News - Fletcher For 2010

Some were saying it would be a farewell tour for Fletcher in 2009, but he says he can play more than just one more year.

From the Herald Sun: I'll soldier on: Dustin Fletcher

"Hurls is a pretty good size for a young kid. Then we've got Tayte Pears, and he's looking pretty good training-wise.

"Darcy Daniher is the other one, too, that's back into training, so, there are three or four guys there that can step into fullback.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Fletcher probably enjoys running around in the back line without an opponent and kicking the ball 20 times a game, and his fantasy coaches also want that to happen. If some of Hurley, Pears, Daniher and Ryder can handle the big opposition forwards then Fletcher could again be one of the top fantasy defenders.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Travis Cloke

Travis Cloke: Collingwood's Cloke can bring in a lot of marks, and his kicking for goal is getting better too. The return of a healthy Rocca shouldn't hurt his stats, and may even allow Cloke to play better if he has a lesser defender on him if teams go with their best defender on Rocca.
