AFL News - A New Prestigiacomo

Prestigiacomo could be very important for Collingwood at full back in 2009, as he is healthy again, and they may even use him in other spots.

From the Collingwood site: Veterans ready for 2009

The coaches had Prestigiacomo positioned at the start of the drill on John Anthony in the forward line. The veteran’s closing speed hindered Anthony’s ability to get to the ball and was thus held goalless for the first half.

Prestigiacomo continued his defensive play on the wing taking opponent’s Dane Swan and Alan Toovey at various stages. A new-look Prestigacomo was calling for the ball for the entire drill and looked comfortable with taking an outstretched mark on the lead from teammate Dale Thomas.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

He is usually the type of player you don't want on a fantasy team, but see what he does in preseason and how the Magpies use him. He is always very affordable in fantasy games, as his spoils don't bring in fantasy points, but if he does get minutes when played more in the action his stats would go up.

AFL News - Raines Back For Richmond

Richmond went searching for experienced players in the offseason, but a couple of their new players may be in the VFL as Raines should return.

From the Richmond site: Raines parts from clouds of '08

Two seasons without missing a game had been followed by a great pre-season where he completed every session and was as fit as he’d ever been.

In round two last year, the Tigers fell to North Melbourne by 41 points and were dealt an extra blow when Raines dislocated his kneecap.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

His injuries in 2008 should mean a lower fantasy price in 2009. Raines is also eligible as a fantasy defender and can bring in the stats that a lot of midfielders do.

AFL News - Hawks Have Options With Croad Out

Hawthorn may not think they have many problems, but Geelong know that when a key defender is out it does make things more difficult. The Cats did draft Taylor to help with Egan out, and the Hawks also have new players who could be used in Croad’s spot.

From the AFL site: Depth the key, say Hawks

"We've just got to deal with that (Croad's injury) as best as we can and guys will get an opportunity to step up and go to the next level, hopefully," Gilham said.

"Guys like Ryan Schoenmakers and Jordan Lisle, particularly in the backline … I definitely think they will get their opportunity in the NAB Cup."

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Fantasy teams could make a bit of money early in the season with the player that Hawthorn uses in Croad's spot. When Croad returns, then sell the player for a profit. Schoenmakers and Lisle will be very cheap as they are new players to the AFL, Thorp and Dowler will also be very affordable in AFL fantasy games.

AFL News - Hooper Not Fine, And Fined

It might be a while before Hooper is close to playing for the Lions again.

From the Herald Sun: Lions to fine Rhan Hooper $40,000

BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss has shown disciplinary breaches will not be tolerated by fining wayward forward Rhan Hooper $40,000. Hooper, who faced the sack after multiple contract breaches, had no choice but to accept the reduced contract to salvage his career.

Voss, who trained with the 21-year-old Hooper during the Christmas holidays, has shown he will be as uncompromising a coach as he was a player when it comes to disciplinary issues.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Definitely someone that fantasy coaches can't have on their rosters when the season starts. Rockliff is someone who could benefit from this and he is a cheap fantasy forward to have on the bench.

AFL News - Firrito Could See Midfield Minutes

Firrito is a bit undersized for full back, but is often the best option the Kangaroos have. They may try something else in 2009, and Firrito could have a midfield role for some games.

From the AFL site: Pre-season gains give Firrito new stride

Firrito’s pre-season achievements have encouraged him to consider a part-time return to the midfield, where he spent the early portion of his 105 games, but feels he has too much “unfinished business” to vacate the backline completely.

“I’ll play wherever the coach wants me though I’d love to get back up there (in the midfield),” he said. “I still want to play down back because I feel like I play pretty good footy down there.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Not hard to figure out, a player should get a lot more stats in the middle than at full back. It could still be a risk signing Firrito if he is moved into the middle, as he could just as quickly go back to the full back spot for the next game.

If North Melbourne go with a different full back it could hurt their stats. Petrie would be a very capable player there, especially against the biggest full forwards, but that would kill off his fantasy value. Hansen is another option, and it would not be beneficial for his fantasy points either.

There is a small chance that someone like R Tarrant could get into the team as their new full back. As his fantasy price is very low, as long as he plays he can make a fantasy team some money.

AFL News - Cats Need Wojcinski's Pace

The Cats were slow in the Grand Final, and will be reminded about that a lot whenever Wojcinski is mentioned.

From the Herald Sun: The pain of GF omission spurs David Wojcinski

He was the first Cat across the line in yesterday's Pier to Pub swim at Lorne and hopes to start running this week with the view to playing in Round 1.

"I missed pretty much half the year and battled through the second half of the year with that injury and that was a big part of the reason I missed the Grand Final," he said.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

The runs from half back that Wojcinski produces are entertaining, but he hasn't really used that ability to be a great fantasy player. He has been able to produce a few big fantasy games, but nothing consistent. Wojcinski will be at an affordable fantasy price again, but he probably isn't worth signing unless the Cats lose a few of their big stars which would open up more playing time and a bigger role for Wojcinski.

AFL News - Naitanui Injury

It isn't a major problem, but Naitanui's injury will delay the start of his AFL career.

From the AFL site: Eagles lose Naitanui for start of season

WEST Coast prize recruit Nick Naitanui will miss the start of the 2009 season with a knee injury.

Naitanui, snared by the Eagles with pick No.2 in last year's national draft, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee early next week after experiencing soreness as his pre-season training load increased.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

This changes some fantasy AFL plans. He can't be one of the starting ruckmen for fantasy teams, but could still start the season on a fantasy bench.

AFL News - Fosdike Finished

One Swan is gone, Fosdike, but apparently the talk about Kennelly leaving is wrong.

From The Age: Injured Fosdike ready to quit

Fosdike was drafted by the Swans at overall selection No.3 in the 1998 national draft, and the South Australian went on to play 164 senior games with the Swans. As the club continues to blend youth such as Craig Bird, Jarred Moore and Pat Veszpremi into their senior line-up, Fosdike's expected departure will mean that seven members of the 2005 grand final winning team have now left, with Ben Mathews and Nick Davis departing at the end of last season.

One premiership player who isn't going anywhere just yet though is Irishman Tadhg Kennelly, with the club scoffing at a report in an Irish newspaper that the defender had held talks with the Swans earlier this week and was heading home and "return to [County] Kerry full-time within the next two weeks".

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Fosdike shouldn't have been in anyone's planning for 2009 fantasy teams, but maybe someone like Schmidt or Barlow is now a chance to play more. Schmidt can be used by the Swans in a role that Fosdike had before, while Barlow has the height and mobility to be a fantasy star but he wnet backwards in 2008.

AFL News - Carlton Buy Damaged Goods From Fremantle

Tall players and foot ailments are not a good combination, so Carlton could be without Warnock when the regular season commences.

From The Age: Foot injury puts Warnock out for months

CARLTON recruit Robbie Warnock has been sidelined for up to eight weeks with a stress fracture in his foot.

Warnock's setback is further bad news for the Blues, who have Heath Scotland (foot), Brad Fisher (elbow), Adam Bentick (hip) and Adam Hartlett (knee) still recovering.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

In fantasy games, Kreuzer and Cloke have a bit more value with Warnock injured. Kreuzer might be the one to sign, as he will be cheaper and Kreuzer showed great accuracy in front of goal last season as well as the ability to cover a lot of ground when played in the ruck.

AFL News - Leuenberger With Extra Beef

The Lions could have one of the best ruck groups in the AFL, if Charman and Clark can stay healthy and Leuenberger can add some more bulk to compliment his mobility and skills.

From Fox Sports: Brisbane coach Michael Voss has the Lions on the ball early

Brisbane are a tall side and are starting to look as if they can match it physically with any side in the competition.

Matthew Leuenberger (102kg) and Mitch Clark (99kg) have each added 4kg of muscle to their developing frames, while second-year players Lachlan Henderson (95kg) and Tom Collier (86kg) have also benefited from another summer in the gym.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

It may not be long before Leuenberger achieves his "next Dean Cox" potential. Fantasy coaches will want him when he does do it, and can sign him in 2009 at an affordable price.

AFL News - Hawkins Could Reach His Potential In 2009

The Geelong forward line is their weak link, although it is still very capable of kicking a winning score. Hawkins should be able to give them a big target to kick to in the goal-square, which would be useful as Mooney and S Johnson often spend time far from goal.

From the Herald Sun: Geelong Football Club cautious on Tom Hawkins

The 20-year-old played the first 10 games last year before form and then his foot problem kept him out of the senior side for the rest of the season.

Geelong assistant coach Brendan McCartney said Hawkins should play against Adelaide at Telstra Dome on February 21, but the club was wary of not pushing him too hard.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Hawkins should have the edge over Lonergan and other potential marking forwards the Cats may consider. If Hawkins is there in round 1 for the Cats he should be an affordable player for fantasy teams to have.

AFL News - Gilmore Doing More

The Dockers have one huge ruckman, and a couple of smaller options for the backup ruck role. Gilmore could have that role again, Bradley is another option.

From the AFL site: Taz mania as Harvey signals new role

"The ones burning up the track are guys like Steven Dodd, (Garrick) Ibbotson, (Ryan) Crowley and (Daniel) Gilmore.

"Stephen Hill is also holding his own, and guys like Ryan Murphy, (Paul) Duffield and (David) Mundy have undergone a great transition in their bodies, so I would expect a lot of improvement in them."

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Gilmore can bring in a lot of stats as a mobile ruckman, but it all depends on the available minutes. If Gilmore plays in the back line and then goes into the ruck, it would obviously mean more playing time than if he just sits on the bench until he gives Sandilands a rest.

The Dockers have talked about playing Tarrant everywhere before but haven't really done it. Instead he stays forward and kicks the ball out on the full a lot. If they do play him in a Richardson-type of role, his marks and possessions would be a lot higher and Tarrant would be on more fantasy teams in 2009.

AFL News - Bombers To Try A Tall Forward Line

Sheedy always made sure he had size in his forward line and Coach Knights is going to try to go big at a time when most clubs go small. With a lot of games under a roof, the Bombers may be able to make it work.

Here is the height that Coach Knights has on his list. Plenty will be left to the veterans to do, but if Gumbleton can have an injury-free breakout year he could be a difference-maker and get them into the finals.

24 or older, 191cm or taller

Fletcher, Dustin
Lucas, Scott
Lloyd, Matthew
Hille, David
Laycock, Jason

23 or younger, 191cm or taller

Neagle, Jay
Ryder, Patrick
Gumbleton, Scott
Hooker, Cale
Bellchambers, Tom
Daniher, Darcy
Pears, Tayte
Bock, Christian - R
Hurley, Michael
Still, Michael

From the AFL site: Knights's tall order for Bombers

The second-year coach plans to play Matthew Lloyd, Scott Lucas, Jay Neagle and the returning Scott Gumbleton up forward, and to assign other tall timber to the attacking half.

Gumbleton, a 197cm centre half-forward from WA who was pick No.2 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft, has played only five games in two seasons due to injury, but the Bombers says he is sizzling in the pre-season, recently recording a remarkable 15.4 beep test.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Gumbleton and Lucas could be fantasy bargains, while Lloyd is probably good enough to justify his price even in a crowded forward line. Neagle doesn't get a lot of kicks, but sometimes most of them go for goals. At his expected fantasy price, he is just a bit too much to have on a fantasy bench and isn't ging to get enough fantasy points to start, but see what he does in preseason.

AFL News - O'Loughlin Not Ready

The Swans need to be careful with their veterans, and O'Loughlin may miss games at the start of the regular season to make sure he is there for September.

From The Age: Canny veteran O'Loughlin eases back into the pre-season furnace

"Mick is still taking some time, and we're not rushing him," assistant coach John Longmire said. "He had a big operation, and fortunately he's a pretty good touch player. He had a good pre-season last year so he's got a bit of training under his belt. We expect him to just ease into it. We're not going to rush him. He's still a number of weeks away. He's just getting moving now with his running."

Asked who might miss round one, Longmire said: "Mick is probably the only one with a question mark. However, we're still confident."

AFL Fantasy Impact:

O'Loughlin is now a big risk for fantasy teams, due to his age and constant injuries. That might also mean Lewis Johnston will be a good player to have on a fantasy bench in 2009.

There is still plenty of training during the preseason and then the practice matches, so these rankings are going to be updated before the fantasy season starts. The rankings go from who should be the best at the club for fantasy points down to those who are not expected to play a lot in 2009. The "R" indicates a rookie player.

9 Possible Fantasy Bargains For 2009

When the official fantasy prices for next year are released, many bargain-priced players will be there to find and sign. Here are some who are expected to be at affordable prices, compared to the fantasy points they should bring in. They are listed with players who are expected to be similarly priced, but don’t usually get the same stats.

Chad Cornes - Could be at a similar price to M Doughty and J King.

David Myers - Could be at a similar price to L McGuane and S Watt.

Ricky Petterd - Could be at a similar price to M Spangher and M Austin.

Jed Adcock - Could be at a similar price to A Bentick and X Clarke.

Courtney Dempsey - Could be at a similar price to J Russell and R Eddy.

Shaun Higgins - Could be at a similar price to N Fosdike and L Fisher.

Hamish McIntosh - Could be at a similar price to C Wood and S King.

Matthew Bate - Could be at a similar price to M Campbell and S Welsh.

Scott Lucas - Could be at a similar price to R Hooper and H Playfair.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Scott Lucas

Scott Lucas: It seems that he could be very cheap in AFL fantasy games, so if he is kicking his usual super-goals in the preseason competition it is probably a good move to sign him for the fantasy season. The Bombers will still need their veterans to kick a winning score in 2009 and while Lloyd is also someone to consider signing he won't be a possible fantasy forward bargain like Lucas.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Tayte Pears

Tayte Pears: Michael Hurley was a possible inclusion in next season's SuperCoach team that was posted previously, and his teammate Pears could also be a useful fantasy defender to have in 2009. Tayte Pears should be an inexpensive player, and he showed a couple of times in 2008 that he can get 15 possessions in a game. See what type of role the Bombers use him in during preseason games, unless he is out of the action at full back in the role Mal Michael played he should be a bargain fantasy defender.

AFL News - Fletcher For 2010

Some were saying it would be a farewell tour for Fletcher in 2009, but he says he can play more than just one more year.

From the Herald Sun: I'll soldier on: Dustin Fletcher

"Hurls is a pretty good size for a young kid. Then we've got Tayte Pears, and he's looking pretty good training-wise.

"Darcy Daniher is the other one, too, that's back into training, so, there are three or four guys there that can step into fullback.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Fletcher probably enjoys running around in the back line without an opponent and kicking the ball 20 times a game, and his fantasy coaches also want that to happen. If some of Hurley, Pears, Daniher and Ryder can handle the big opposition forwards then Fletcher could again be one of the top fantasy defenders.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Travis Cloke

Travis Cloke: Collingwood's Cloke can bring in a lot of marks, and his kicking for goal is getting better too. The return of a healthy Rocca shouldn't hurt his stats, and may even allow Cloke to play better if he has a lesser defender on him if teams go with their best defender on Rocca.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Chris Masten

Chris Masten: If the Eagles had taken someone like Rich in the draft it may have harmed Chris Masten's AFL fantasy numbers, by going with Naitanui and Swift it should mean that Masten has players that compliment him and won't compete with him for minutes. Chris Masten is expected to be at a very affordable price, and his teammate Ebert may also be at a similar opening fantasy price. The Eagles are going to get a lot of hitouts with Cox in the ruck, and while the ball will often go to Priddis there will be plenty of it that goes to Masten.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Matthew Richardson

Matthew Richardson: There are a lot of ideas for winning at AFL fantasy, and Richardson is an exception to most of them. When players get old, they and their stats production are supposed to slow down, obviously Richardson isn't. A fantasy forward on a below average AFL team could be expected to have some games when the ball doesn't get down to him a lot, that doesn't happen to Richardson as he will go to where the ball is. When someone moves from full forward to an onball role their goals are supposed to be lower in total, Richardson can still get multiple goals when running all over the ground.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Matt Rosa

Matt Rosa: The 2008 season was very bad for Rosa, and many other Eagles, but it also means he has a cheaper price in 2009. The Eagles need more run, and they will expect to get it from Rosa, as well as younger players like Houlihan and Shuey. Rosa should be able to get at least 20 possessions a game, and is expected to have a good kick to handball ratio.

Winners League NFL Fantasy Champion

This is counting the fantasy points before they are hatched, but it looks like the AFL fantasy tactics have secured a championship in the Winners League of Yahoo NFL.

The weather can play a part in AFL fantasy, and a big part in NFL fantasy towards the end of the regular season. If you know your players will be under a roof, then it is their best chance for maximum stats.

For the round 22 AFL games, which are fantasy AFL Grand Finals, you want some of your stars playing against the worst team. It is easier for someone to kick a lot of goals against the teams down the bottom of the ladder who have given up several weeks earlier.

For the fantasy NFL, the opponent's quarterback was playing away to a quality team and the game was played in the snow. The quarterback who helped win the league, he was playing against the worst team in the NFL, and possibly all-time, and the game was inside with a roof keeping out the weather.

The tight end on this fantasy team isn't a star, very few tight ends in NFL are fantasy stars, but as the tight end was playing against one of the bad teams it did help him have a good game for stats.

Another thing to learn from the NFL, is that there are players who share a position and when one of them is out injured it makes the other one a much better player. This can sometimes happen with AFL fantasy ruckmen, who can be splitting the minutes and then when one is injured it means the other player has a big jump in playing time and stats. For the NFL team, the running back Maurice Jones-Drew upped his output in recent weeks as the other main running back at his team was out injured.

The other team in the championship game still has three players in the Monday Night Football game, but they should not be able to get close as 75 points separate the teams in the fantasy matchup.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Roger Hayden

Roger Hayden: The Dockers look to Roger Hayden to control the football in the back line, and that is useful for fantasy points. Sometimes he plays a loose role, and that is what fantasy coaches want their defenders to do. A very good mark for his height, he is one of the more consistent Dockers for fantasy teams to sign.

AFL News - Scott Lucas Comeback

The Bombers do have the big forwards who can kick a winning score, but they have to stay healthy and the Essendon midfield has to increase the supply of the football to it. Scott Lucas says he will be ready to play in round 1.

From the Herald Sun: Scott Lucas's future in in his hands

It has been a frustrating year for Lucas, who was restricted to nine games
because of knee and back problems, with his season ending in Round 17.

"I've had a good run and I think I balanced it out last year with
a pretty average run, but that's part and parcel of the game," said Lucas, who
kicked 61 goals in 2007.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Lucas will be a bargain for fantasy footy in 2009, and may be so cheap that he is a must-have player. With his big leg he can kick plenty of goals, and when healthy he can also have high totals for marks.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Tom Hawkins

Tom Hawkins: The Geelong forward line did not function as the Cats expected, so maybe they go with the big target in the goal-square in 2009. Tom Hawkins might have a fantasy breakout season, if the Cats choose to stick with him up forward. Geelong need a lot more than Mooney and S Johnson up forward, and Hawkins should be able to cement a regular spot ahead of Lonergan, S Simpson and M Brown.

AFL News - Jordan Lewis Injury

The Hawks do have some of their stars missing at the moment, but that isn't important as they will all be back when the games start.

From the AFL site: Hawk winged as Lewis injures shoulder

Lewis and Hodge will join defender Trent Croad (foot) in missing Hawthorn’s NAB AFL NAB Cup matches, a situation Evans believes has an up-side.

"While we don't want a long injury list, it gives us a real opportunity to see some of our kids in the NAB Cup, guys like Beau Dowler and Mitch Thorp and maybe a couple of the draftees.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Jordan Lewis is going to be at an affordable price in fantasy games for 2009. But he is a bit risky with the possibility of injuries and suspensions, and he has some bad games. He can also have huge games for stats too. Missing the preseason might mean it is best to wait to see how Lewis plays before signing him, it might take him a few weeks into the season for him to find fitness and form.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Daniel Harris

Daniel Harris: The Kangaroos do not have a great midfield, so even if Coach Laidley doesn't want to give Harris a lot of minutes he may still have to. More minutes should mean more stats. There will be a lot of fantasy AFL onballers who cost more than Harris, so he could be at a bit of a bargain price.

AFL News - Maguire Recovery Update

The Saints seem to have more than their expected amount of injuries, and some of those who missed a lot of 2008 are a chance to play a lot in 2009.

From The Age: Maguire endures the long, long wait

"We've taken it really slowly since and he's shown some really good signs. He's obviously keen to get back training with the group, which he'll do not long after Christmas. It's still a work in progress in regard to managing his loads and combining his training, recovery and rest, but he's ticked a few boxes up to now (and) we're pretty happy."

Misson said Steven Baker (recovering from a knee injury) was "close to coming back to full skills work" and Sean Dempster was also on track after a knee reconstruction.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Maguire is probably a bad player for fantasy teams, especially when the Saints move him up forward, but he can help other Saints have big games for stats. With Maguire, and Hudghton there, S Fisher can go after kicks all game. Gilbert can also be used on a smaller player.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Grant Birchall

Grant Birchall: Hawthorn have Guerra, Ellis and Birchall, and sometimes Ladson, who have a lot of the ball in the back line. Grant Birchall is always a capable fantasy player, who keeps running and is always involved as they move the ball up the field. In some ways, he plays a bit shorter than his real height, which is beneficial for fantasy play. Gilham, Croad, Murphy, Brown and others play on the opposition's key forwards and that allows Birchall to play his natural game of running with plenty of handballs and kicks.

AFL News - Bombers Need A Healthy Winderlich

Essendon could be able to put a competitive midfield unit together but it will need everyone healthy to do that. They don't have enough depth if players like Winderlich and McVeigh are injured again.

From the Herald Sun: Injury shakes up Jason Winderlich's world

Winderlich started running again last Monday - a huge step towards a comeback that was in jeopardy a couple of months ago.

"The plan for me is to try and play the last two NAB Cup games and, all going well, play Round 1," he said.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Winderlich, Prismall, Lovett, McPhee, Nash, they could all be at a similar fantasy price in 2009. Prismall won't be ready for the start of the year, McPhee would be someone to use as a fantasy defender even if he still has midfielder eligibility. Winderlich could be the best of the Bombers named here, so if he gets back to full fitness before the season starts he may be someone to sign.

AFL News - Dockers Give New Players Longer Contracts

The Dockers need to have stability for their list, so signing Hill and Suban for an extra year will help there.

From the Fremantle site: Hill and Suban commit until 2011

The pair accepted the option of signing for an additional year on top of the standard two-year contract provided for under the AFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.

An intelligent footballer with very good skills, Suban has played mostly as a small defender and in the midfield. He is good in contested situations and displays sound ball handling.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Lindsay Thomas

Lindsay Thomas: Considering his possible price, North Melbourne's Lindsay Thomas might be a good signing in 2009. He could kick a goal or two per game, and if he also gets time in the midfield his fantasy points production could be a lot more than his initial fantasy price is worth.

AFL News - Rockliff The Right Player To Help Brown And Bradshaw

Some picks seem to make more sense than others, when the Lions drafted a needed small forward in Rockliff it was the logical thing for them to do.

From the AFL site: Rockliff set to scale heights

The Lions did talk to Rockliff when he attended the draft camp in October, but said his selection as the number five pre-season pick still came as a surprise.

The leading goalkicker in this year’s TAC Cup competition said he was a huge fan of Voss and was excited about coming to Brisbane.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Rockliff could have been drafted last year, so he is a bit older than many other players who have just been added to AFL lists. The Lions traded out one small forward, and have suspended another, so there is a chance that Rockliff could step right in and play round 1.

AFL News - Danny Meyer Makes A Power Move

Port Adelaide may have salvaged someone from Richmond yet again, but even if Meyer doesn't become the next Rodan reclamation project success it was still a good move to acquire a former first round pick with only a rookie selection.

From the Herald Sun: Danny Meyer finds his niche

His ability to play a Lindsay Gilbee-type role and set up play from half-back didn't save his career at Punt Rd but it earned him a second AFL chance.

The 22-year-old was a Glenelg junior before being drafted by the Tigers in 2004. Richmond rated Meyer so highly it took him with pick 12 in the national draft, the selection acquired from Geelong in a trade for Brad Ottens.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

When someone is said to be in "a Lindsay Gilbee-type role" it is something that fantasy coaches listen to. So if Meyer does find his way into the Power team during season 2009, he may help fantasy teams.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Jobe Watson

Jobe Watson: Hille to Watson, and Watson handballs, that should happen at a lot of stoppages in season 2009. In Dream Team, if Watson kicks the ball and it doesn't go where it should, he still gets fantasy points. There have been some times when Coach Knights has been unable to find the plot and has used Watson as a forward, hopefully that won't happen in 2009 if you have Watson on a fantasy team as he is wasted close to goals when it comes to stats.

AFL News - Preseason And Rookie Pick Scouting Reports

Click on the link to see scouting reports on everyone who was selected yesterday.

From the Herald Sun: 2009 AFL Rookie Draft - complete bios

WHO did your club take in today's drafts? Where will they play? What are their strengths? We tell you here.

AFL News - Skipworth Back In The AFL

The Bombers have not been among the leaders for off season moves in recent times. Unable to get trades done, and making a few dubious moves with their list. They decided to go with Skipworth as a preseason pick, and while it seems he will be a good player to have around the club, it certainly isn't a pick with upside.

From The Age: Skipworth a worthy addition

It wasn't until last Thursday night, after a roast dinner at Essendon coach Matthew Knights' house that the 25-year-old was told he'd be given the chance to restart his 44-game AFL game career, two years after it had appeared to end.

Delisted by Adelaide at the end of 2006, and having moved away from home on his own to play for VFL side Bendigo, the 2007 season was only a few games old when Skipworth badly damaged the patella tendon in his left knee. It was an injury he was told would cause no future problems, but would take a full year to recover from.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

In some ways, he is the new Peverill at Essendon, at least until Prismall is ready to play for them. His projected stats could be in the low to mid teens for possessions, so maybe 8 kicks, 6 handballs and 2 tackles per game if he does get into the team. Skipworth is probably a useful player to have on the fantasy bench due to his low fantasy price and that he is older and ready to play, but it may depend on what fantasy position he has. There was a time when Skipworth was a fantasy forward. If he is a fantasy forward or defender, he could be more useful than if Skipworth is just a fantasy midfielder. In 2006, Skipworth's SuperCoach averages were similar to Fergus Watts and Cameron Faulkner, so that means he wasn't great when he was a Crow for fantasy points although he did have some big performances back in 2005.

AFL News - Another Tom Williams Recovery

As usual he was injured, and is now better, and could be an important piece if the Bulldogs hope to get back to the top 4.

From the Herald Sun: Bulldog Tom keeps on punching

After 13 games in 2007, his 2008 season was ruined by a rare thigh tendon injury that required expert advice to treat, a quadriceps strain in his other leg and a recurring shoulder problem.

"I'm not exactly setting record pace," Williams said of his average five matches a season.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

T Williams won't cost a lot, but for a similar price you could instead take someone like Hurn, L Hansen or A Everitt who may have more stats. It seems it was many years ago that Williams was a midfield prospect, that is unlikely to happen now, although if it did his fantasy value would increase dramatically.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Nathan Bock

Nathan Bock: Fantasy coaches want Bock to be playing in the Adelaide back line, he should be guaranteed to do that every game as the Crows have added a lot of tall forwards with the drafts, will have a few return from injury and also have some more tall forwards on their list who are ready to play a bigger role. Bassett is gone, so if some of his marks and possessions are distributed to other defenders there it could push up Bock's stats a bit more. Rutten will be at full back, Stevens is probably used as a defender more, Moran or Davis could play there if the Crows are against a taller team, and Bock should be left to run around and accumulate fantasy points.

Preseason And Rookie Picks For Fantasy AFL

Josh Carr - Might play every game at his new old club.
Hayden Skipworth - Could be a regular player until Prismall is ready to play.
Chris Johnson - The Blues wanted him so there must be a spot for him in their 2009 planning.
Tom Rockliff - The Lions need a small forward, he could be a perfect fit.
Ben Cousins - More baggage than a luggage store, but in fantasy he will probably have a low price.
Casey Sibosado - Might give them another option up forward.
Robin Nahas - Ready to step into the team.
Zac Dawson - If Hudghton is injured again, Zac could be back on the AFL field.
Matthew DeBoer - Could get into the midfield as they rebuild.
Danny Meyer - They will try to have another Rodan success.
Greg Bentley - Someone who could get playing time in their back line.
Clancee Pearce - Ready to play if Hayden is out.
Alan Obst - They have played him before.
Ranga Ediriwickrama - May get into their side in the second half of the season.
Jay van Berlo - Could get into the midfield as they rebuild.
Scott Reed - He can play in a lot of different roles, and the Magpies do play their youngsters.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Sean Rusling

Sean Rusling: It is a yearly fantasy footy tradition, looking at Sean Rusling's low fantasy price and possible role in the Collingwood forward line and thinking he could be a fantasy bargain. Of course, his constant injuries are the reason his price is low so he is a big risk. But Collingwood have the big forwards, and a lot of little forwards, and need someone medium-sized and quick on the lead to compliment them so that is why Rusling is a player to watch.

Top 250 In The Herald Sun Fantasy Game

The offseason SuperTeam fantasy AFL game has finished, and the team had a good result. The best round was a top 15 score. Finishing the season in the top 250, out of around 25,000 competitors, was a better than expected spot in the overall standings.

2008 AFL Draft - Players To Watch For In The Rookie Draft

The story below has the prospects, along with their information and scouting reports, who are expected to be among the many players taken in the rookie draft, and a couple of them could be preseason picks.

From The Age: Last chance looms for rookies

What does that all mean? It means that between 70 and 80 players should be rookie-listed on Tuesday, some who have been delisted in recent weeks but are still under 21. It also means the door hasn't been completely closed on the unlucky youngsters who missed out on being picked at the national draft two weeks ago. Here are a dozen to look out for:

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Jackson Trengove

Jackson Trengove: One more Port Adelaide newcomer to watch in preseason. Jackson Trengove could be a fantasy ruckman, but at the Power they may use him as a defender if they do decide to play him in 2009. One extra tall in the back line could be useful for them, as both Chaplin and Pettigrew play an attacking game from the defensive half, and the Power could look to Trengove or maybe Lobbe for that position. The Power also have a confusing situation up forward, as they try to resturcture with another tall forward or two, so an injury to someone could open playing time for Trengove at centre half forward.

AFL News - Adcock Expected To Improve On Poor 2008

Like a lot of Lions in 2008, Adcock did not have a good year. A new coach, better fitness and a new role should mean Adcock plays a lot better.

From Fox Sports: Brisbane's Jed Adcock primed for greater responsibility in 2009

"I have also put more of a focus on my fitness. I think my strength side of my game has always been there and fitness is one of those attributes you can work really hard on and improve."

He expects that more miles in his legs during summer will translate to longer periods in the midfield.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Fantasy coaches with Adcock on their teams in 2007 were laughing as his price kept going up and his stats were high, everyone who signed him for 2008 was not impressed. He probably bounces back with an improved 2009, and if he is fantasy eligible as a defender he will be a very important fantasy player again.
