Tayte Pears: Michael Hurley was a possible inclusion in next season's SuperCoach team that was posted previously, and his teammate Pears could also be a useful fantasy defender to have in 2009. Tayte Pears should be an inexpensive player, and he showed a couple of times in 2008 that he can get 15 possessions in a game. See what type of role the Bombers use him in during preseason games, unless he is out of the action at full back in the role Mal Michael played he should be a bargain fantasy defender.

AFL News - Fletcher For 2010
Some were saying it would be a farewell tour for Fletcher in 2009, but he says he can play more than just one more year.
From the Herald Sun: I'll soldier on: Dustin Fletcher
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Fletcher probably enjoys running around in the back line without an opponent and kicking the ball 20 times a game, and his fantasy coaches also want that to happen. If some of Hurley, Pears, Daniher and Ryder can handle the big opposition forwards then Fletcher could again be one of the top fantasy defenders.
From the Herald Sun: I'll soldier on: Dustin Fletcher
"Hurls is a pretty good size for a young kid. Then we've got Tayte Pears, and he's looking pretty good training-wise.
"Darcy Daniher is the other one, too, that's back into training, so, there are three or four guys there that can step into fullback.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Travis Cloke
Travis Cloke: Collingwood's Cloke can bring in a lot of marks, and his kicking for goal is getting better too. The return of a healthy Rocca shouldn't hurt his stats, and may even allow Cloke to play better if he has a lesser defender on him if teams go with their best defender on Rocca.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Chris Masten
Chris Masten: If the Eagles had taken someone like Rich in the draft it may have harmed Chris Masten's AFL fantasy numbers, by going with Naitanui and Swift it should mean that Masten has players that compliment him and won't compete with him for minutes. Chris Masten is expected to be at a very affordable price, and his teammate Ebert may also be at a similar opening fantasy price. The Eagles are going to get a lot of hitouts with Cox in the ruck, and while the ball will often go to Priddis there will be plenty of it that goes to Masten.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Matthew Richardson
Matthew Richardson: There are a lot of ideas for winning at AFL fantasy, and Richardson is an exception to most of them. When players get old, they and their stats production are supposed to slow down, obviously Richardson isn't. A fantasy forward on a below average AFL team could be expected to have some games when the ball doesn't get down to him a lot, that doesn't happen to Richardson as he will go to where the ball is. When someone moves from full forward to an onball role their goals are supposed to be lower in total, Richardson can still get multiple goals when running all over the ground.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Matt Rosa
Matt Rosa: The 2008 season was very bad for Rosa, and many other Eagles, but it also means he has a cheaper price in 2009. The Eagles need more run, and they will expect to get it from Rosa, as well as younger players like Houlihan and Shuey. Rosa should be able to get at least 20 possessions a game, and is expected to have a good kick to handball ratio.

Winners League NFL Fantasy Champion
This is counting the fantasy points before they are hatched, but it looks like the AFL fantasy tactics have secured a championship in the Winners League of Yahoo NFL.
The weather can play a part in AFL fantasy, and a big part in NFL fantasy towards the end of the regular season. If you know your players will be under a roof, then it is their best chance for maximum stats.
For the round 22 AFL games, which are fantasy AFL Grand Finals, you want some of your stars playing against the worst team. It is easier for someone to kick a lot of goals against the teams down the bottom of the ladder who have given up several weeks earlier.
For the fantasy NFL, the opponent's quarterback was playing away to a quality team and the game was played in the snow. The quarterback who helped win the league, he was playing against the worst team in the NFL, and possibly all-time, and the game was inside with a roof keeping out the weather.
The tight end on this fantasy team isn't a star, very few tight ends in NFL are fantasy stars, but as the tight end was playing against one of the bad teams it did help him have a good game for stats.
Another thing to learn from the NFL, is that there are players who share a position and when one of them is out injured it makes the other one a much better player. This can sometimes happen with AFL fantasy ruckmen, who can be splitting the minutes and then when one is injured it means the other player has a big jump in playing time and stats. For the NFL team, the running back Maurice Jones-Drew upped his output in recent weeks as the other main running back at his team was out injured.
The other team in the championship game still has three players in the Monday Night Football game, but they should not be able to get close as 75 points separate the teams in the fantasy matchup.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Roger Hayden
Roger Hayden: The Dockers look to Roger Hayden to control the football in the back line, and that is useful for fantasy points. Sometimes he plays a loose role, and that is what fantasy coaches want their defenders to do. A very good mark for his height, he is one of the more consistent Dockers for fantasy teams to sign.

AFL News - Scott Lucas Comeback
The Bombers do have the big forwards who can kick a winning score, but they have to stay healthy and the Essendon midfield has to increase the supply of the football to it. Scott Lucas says he will be ready to play in round 1.
From the Herald Sun: Scott Lucas's future in in his hands
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Lucas will be a bargain for fantasy footy in 2009, and may be so cheap that he is a must-have player. With his big leg he can kick plenty of goals, and when healthy he can also have high totals for marks.
From the Herald Sun: Scott Lucas's future in in his hands
It has been a frustrating year for Lucas, who was restricted to nine games
because of knee and back problems, with his season ending in Round 17.
"I've had a good run and I think I balanced it out last year with
a pretty average run, but that's part and parcel of the game," said Lucas, who
kicked 61 goals in 2007.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Tom Hawkins
Tom Hawkins: The Geelong forward line did not function as the Cats expected, so maybe they go with the big target in the goal-square in 2009. Tom Hawkins might have a fantasy breakout season, if the Cats choose to stick with him up forward. Geelong need a lot more than Mooney and S Johnson up forward, and Hawkins should be able to cement a regular spot ahead of Lonergan, S Simpson and M Brown.

AFL News - Jordan Lewis Injury
The Hawks do have some of their stars missing at the moment, but that isn't important as they will all be back when the games start.
From the AFL site: Hawk winged as Lewis injures shoulder
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Jordan Lewis is going to be at an affordable price in fantasy games for 2009. But he is a bit risky with the possibility of injuries and suspensions, and he has some bad games. He can also have huge games for stats too. Missing the preseason might mean it is best to wait to see how Lewis plays before signing him, it might take him a few weeks into the season for him to find fitness and form.
From the AFL site: Hawk winged as Lewis injures shoulder
Lewis and Hodge will join defender Trent Croad (foot) in missing Hawthorn’s NAB AFL NAB Cup matches, a situation Evans believes has an up-side.
"While we don't want a long injury list, it gives us a real opportunity to see some of our kids in the NAB Cup, guys like Beau Dowler and Mitch Thorp and maybe a couple of the draftees.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Daniel Harris
Daniel Harris: The Kangaroos do not have a great midfield, so even if Coach Laidley doesn't want to give Harris a lot of minutes he may still have to. More minutes should mean more stats. There will be a lot of fantasy AFL onballers who cost more than Harris, so he could be at a bit of a bargain price.

AFL News - Maguire Recovery Update
The Saints seem to have more than their expected amount of injuries, and some of those who missed a lot of 2008 are a chance to play a lot in 2009.
From The Age: Maguire endures the long, long wait
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Maguire is probably a bad player for fantasy teams, especially when the Saints move him up forward, but he can help other Saints have big games for stats. With Maguire, and Hudghton there, S Fisher can go after kicks all game. Gilbert can also be used on a smaller player.
From The Age: Maguire endures the long, long wait
"We've taken it really slowly since and he's shown some really good signs. He's obviously keen to get back training with the group, which he'll do not long after Christmas. It's still a work in progress in regard to managing his loads and combining his training, recovery and rest, but he's ticked a few boxes up to now (and) we're pretty happy."
Misson said Steven Baker (recovering from a knee injury) was "close to coming back to full skills work" and Sean Dempster was also on track after a knee reconstruction.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Grant Birchall
Grant Birchall: Hawthorn have Guerra, Ellis and Birchall, and sometimes Ladson, who have a lot of the ball in the back line. Grant Birchall is always a capable fantasy player, who keeps running and is always involved as they move the ball up the field. In some ways, he plays a bit shorter than his real height, which is beneficial for fantasy play. Gilham, Croad, Murphy, Brown and others play on the opposition's key forwards and that allows Birchall to play his natural game of running with plenty of handballs and kicks.

AFL News - Bombers Need A Healthy Winderlich
Essendon could be able to put a competitive midfield unit together but it will need everyone healthy to do that. They don't have enough depth if players like Winderlich and McVeigh are injured again.
From the Herald Sun: Injury shakes up Jason Winderlich's world
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Winderlich, Prismall, Lovett, McPhee, Nash, they could all be at a similar fantasy price in 2009. Prismall won't be ready for the start of the year, McPhee would be someone to use as a fantasy defender even if he still has midfielder eligibility. Winderlich could be the best of the Bombers named here, so if he gets back to full fitness before the season starts he may be someone to sign.
From the Herald Sun: Injury shakes up Jason Winderlich's world
Winderlich started running again last Monday - a huge step towards a comeback that was in jeopardy a couple of months ago.
"The plan for me is to try and play the last two NAB Cup games and, all going well, play Round 1," he said.

AFL News - Dockers Give New Players Longer Contracts
The Dockers need to have stability for their list, so signing Hill and Suban for an extra year will help there.
From the Fremantle site: Hill and Suban commit until 2011
From the Fremantle site: Hill and Suban commit until 2011
The pair accepted the option of signing for an additional year on top of the standard two-year contract provided for under the AFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.
An intelligent footballer with very good skills, Suban has played mostly as a small defender and in the midfield. He is good in contested situations and displays sound ball handling.
The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Lindsay Thomas
Lindsay Thomas: Considering his possible price, North Melbourne's Lindsay Thomas might be a good signing in 2009. He could kick a goal or two per game, and if he also gets time in the midfield his fantasy points production could be a lot more than his initial fantasy price is worth.

AFL News - Rockliff The Right Player To Help Brown And Bradshaw
Some picks seem to make more sense than others, when the Lions drafted a needed small forward in Rockliff it was the logical thing for them to do.
From the AFL site: Rockliff set to scale heights
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Rockliff could have been drafted last year, so he is a bit older than many other players who have just been added to AFL lists. The Lions traded out one small forward, and have suspended another, so there is a chance that Rockliff could step right in and play round 1.
From the AFL site: Rockliff set to scale heights
The Lions did talk to Rockliff when he attended the draft camp in October, but said his selection as the number five pre-season pick still came as a surprise.
The leading goalkicker in this year’s TAC Cup competition said he was a huge fan of Voss and was excited about coming to Brisbane.

AFL News - Danny Meyer Makes A Power Move
Port Adelaide may have salvaged someone from Richmond yet again, but even if Meyer doesn't become the next Rodan reclamation project success it was still a good move to acquire a former first round pick with only a rookie selection.
From the Herald Sun: Danny Meyer finds his niche
AFL Fantasy Impact:
When someone is said to be in "a Lindsay Gilbee-type role" it is something that fantasy coaches listen to. So if Meyer does find his way into the Power team during season 2009, he may help fantasy teams.
From the Herald Sun: Danny Meyer finds his niche
His ability to play a Lindsay Gilbee-type role and set up play from half-back didn't save his career at Punt Rd but it earned him a second AFL chance.
The 22-year-old was a Glenelg junior before being drafted by the Tigers in 2004. Richmond rated Meyer so highly it took him with pick 12 in the national draft, the selection acquired from Geelong in a trade for Brad Ottens.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
When someone is said to be in "a Lindsay Gilbee-type role" it is something that fantasy coaches listen to. So if Meyer does find his way into the Power team during season 2009, he may help fantasy teams.
The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Jobe Watson
Jobe Watson: Hille to Watson, and Watson handballs, that should happen at a lot of stoppages in season 2009. In Dream Team, if Watson kicks the ball and it doesn't go where it should, he still gets fantasy points. There have been some times when Coach Knights has been unable to find the plot and has used Watson as a forward, hopefully that won't happen in 2009 if you have Watson on a fantasy team as he is wasted close to goals when it comes to stats.

WHO did your club take in today's drafts? Where will they play? What are their strengths? We tell you here.
AFL News - Skipworth Back In The AFL
The Bombers have not been among the leaders for off season moves in recent times. Unable to get trades done, and making a few dubious moves with their list. They decided to go with Skipworth as a preseason pick, and while it seems he will be a good player to have around the club, it certainly isn't a pick with upside.
From The Age: Skipworth a worthy addition
AFL Fantasy Impact:
In some ways, he is the new Peverill at Essendon, at least until Prismall is ready to play for them. His projected stats could be in the low to mid teens for possessions, so maybe 8 kicks, 6 handballs and 2 tackles per game if he does get into the team. Skipworth is probably a useful player to have on the fantasy bench due to his low fantasy price and that he is older and ready to play, but it may depend on what fantasy position he has. There was a time when Skipworth was a fantasy forward. If he is a fantasy forward or defender, he could be more useful than if Skipworth is just a fantasy midfielder. In 2006, Skipworth's SuperCoach averages were similar to Fergus Watts and Cameron Faulkner, so that means he wasn't great when he was a Crow for fantasy points although he did have some big performances back in 2005.
From The Age: Skipworth a worthy addition
It wasn't until last Thursday night, after a roast dinner at Essendon coach Matthew Knights' house that the 25-year-old was told he'd be given the chance to restart his 44-game AFL game career, two years after it had appeared to end.
Delisted by Adelaide at the end of 2006, and having moved away from home on his own to play for VFL side Bendigo, the 2007 season was only a few games old when Skipworth badly damaged the patella tendon in his left knee. It was an injury he was told would cause no future problems, but would take a full year to recover from.

AFL News - Another Tom Williams Recovery
As usual he was injured, and is now better, and could be an important piece if the Bulldogs hope to get back to the top 4.
From the Herald Sun: Bulldog Tom keeps on punching
AFL Fantasy Impact:
T Williams won't cost a lot, but for a similar price you could instead take someone like Hurn, L Hansen or A Everitt who may have more stats. It seems it was many years ago that Williams was a midfield prospect, that is unlikely to happen now, although if it did his fantasy value would increase dramatically.
From the Herald Sun: Bulldog Tom keeps on punching
After 13 games in 2007, his 2008 season was ruined by a rare thigh tendon injury that required expert advice to treat, a quadriceps strain in his other leg and a recurring shoulder problem.
"I'm not exactly setting record pace," Williams said of his average five matches a season.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Nathan Bock
Nathan Bock: Fantasy coaches want Bock to be playing in the Adelaide back line, he should be guaranteed to do that every game as the Crows have added a lot of tall forwards with the drafts, will have a few return from injury and also have some more tall forwards on their list who are ready to play a bigger role. Bassett is gone, so if some of his marks and possessions are distributed to other defenders there it could push up Bock's stats a bit more. Rutten will be at full back, Stevens is probably used as a defender more, Moran or Davis could play there if the Crows are against a taller team, and Bock should be left to run around and accumulate fantasy points.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Sean Rusling
Sean Rusling: It is a yearly fantasy footy tradition, looking at Sean Rusling's low fantasy price and possible role in the Collingwood forward line and thinking he could be a fantasy bargain. Of course, his constant injuries are the reason his price is low so he is a big risk. But Collingwood have the big forwards, and a lot of little forwards, and need someone medium-sized and quick on the lead to compliment them so that is why Rusling is a player to watch.

Top 250 In The Herald Sun Fantasy Game
The offseason SuperTeam fantasy AFL game has finished, and the team had a good result. The best round was a top 15 score. Finishing the season in the top 250, out of around 25,000 competitors, was a better than expected spot in the overall standings.

2008 AFL Draft - Players To Watch For In The Rookie Draft
The story below has the prospects, along with their information and scouting reports, who are expected to be among the many players taken in the rookie draft, and a couple of them could be preseason picks.
From The Age: Last chance looms for rookies
From The Age: Last chance looms for rookies
What does that all mean? It means that between 70 and 80 players should be rookie-listed on Tuesday, some who have been delisted in recent weeks but are still under 21. It also means the door hasn't been completely closed on the unlucky youngsters who missed out on being picked at the national draft two weeks ago. Here are a dozen to look out for:
The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Jackson Trengove
Jackson Trengove: One more Port Adelaide newcomer to watch in preseason. Jackson Trengove could be a fantasy ruckman, but at the Power they may use him as a defender if they do decide to play him in 2009. One extra tall in the back line could be useful for them, as both Chaplin and Pettigrew play an attacking game from the defensive half, and the Power could look to Trengove or maybe Lobbe for that position. The Power also have a confusing situation up forward, as they try to resturcture with another tall forward or two, so an injury to someone could open playing time for Trengove at centre half forward.

AFL News - Adcock Expected To Improve On Poor 2008
Like a lot of Lions in 2008, Adcock did not have a good year. A new coach, better fitness and a new role should mean Adcock plays a lot better.
From Fox Sports: Brisbane's Jed Adcock primed for greater responsibility in 2009
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Fantasy coaches with Adcock on their teams in 2007 were laughing as his price kept going up and his stats were high, everyone who signed him for 2008 was not impressed. He probably bounces back with an improved 2009, and if he is fantasy eligible as a defender he will be a very important fantasy player again.
From Fox Sports: Brisbane's Jed Adcock primed for greater responsibility in 2009
"I have also put more of a focus on my fitness. I think my strength side of my game has always been there and fitness is one of those attributes you can work really hard on and improve."
He expects that more miles in his legs during summer will translate to longer periods in the midfield.

AFL News - Brad Johnson Over His Injuries
Brad Johnson was not at his best in 2008, the Bulldogs think he will play a lot better in 2009.
From The Age: Bulldogs to bite back as Eade aims high for 2009
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Brad Johnson was an automatic fantasy football signing until 2008, so be careful and see what he does in preseason before signing him for 2009. He will probably be a little bit cheaper than Giansiracusa and Murphy, although those other Bulldogs are safer options for fantasy teams.
From The Age: Bulldogs to bite back as Eade aims high for 2009
"Brad Johnson just shows at his age, going on 33, that he's still got another two years in him at least," Eade said.
"I think there's two areas there. I think the guys that haven't played many games — Ward, (Sam) Reid, Jarrad Grant — we'd like these players to be able to step up and then there's the players who are in their mid-20s that need to step up," he said.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Hamish Hartlett
Hamish Hartlett: Even if the Power have all their veterans back in the side, Hartlett should still find a spot in the team every week. Port Adelaide decided to not draft for need early, going with Hartlett instead of a ruckman, so they want to win now and think Hartlett will help with that. Hartlett probably starts on the bench, and then goes into the middle when he comes onto the ground, similar to how the Cats used J Selwood in his first year.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Matthew Broadbent
Matthew Broadbent: Several of the players that Port Adelaide have just drafted could be useful for fantasy teams in 2009. Broadbent didn't go early in the draft so he will have a low price, the only players being cheaper than him will be those on rookie lists. Expected to be a fantasy defender, he does have the ability to be used in the midfield if a few injuries open a spot there for him in 2009. As with many of the new players to AFL, the preseason games will give an indication as to whether they are a good chance to be players to have on fantasy rosters, and Broadbent will have a lot of competition for a spot in the Power back line or midfield.

Mocking The Mock Draft
The first two picks of the draft, and the last two as well, were correctly predicted. A few in between those were out just a tad.
1 Melbourne
Jack Watts
Real Pick - Jack Watts
A correct guess, not that everyone else didn't also say Watts is the name for Melbourne.
2 West Coast
Nicholas Naitanui
Real Pick - Nicholas Naitanui
Two out of two, that is a good score so far.
3 Fremantle
Daniel Rich
Real Pick - Stephen Hill
There must be plenty of Fremantle fans still wondering why it was Hill before Rich.
4 Port Adelaide
Hamish Hartlett
Real Pick - Hamish Hartlett
At one time, it did look like this would be a very hard pick to guess, but most seemed to think that it would be Hartlett as the draft got closer.
5 Essendon
Stephen Hill
Real Pick - Michael Hurley
Believed the Hill hype, but not for pick 3, pick 5 even seemed like a bit of a reach.
6 Carlton
Michael Hurley
Real Pick - Chris Yarran
Hurley was out by only one spot.
7 Brisbane
Jack Ziebell
Real Pick - Daniel Rich
Ziebell would last a couple more picks in the real draft.
8 Richmond
Tyrone Vickery
Real Pick - Tyrone Vickery
Not a difficult guess, it all depended on Vickery getting past the Power.
9 North Melbourne
Tom Swift
Real Pick - Jack Ziebell
The Rich slide pushed Ziebell down to this pick, and Swift also had his own draft slide going.
10 Adelaide
Chris Yarran
Real Pick - Phil Davis
Yarran was gone much earlier.
11 Collingwood
Steele Sidebottom
Real Pick - Steele Sidebottom
Didn't seem like a great fit for the mock drafts, as the Magpies needed someone quicker, but it was a correct guess.
12 Sydney
Jackson Trengove
Real Pick - Lewis Johnston
Swans went with more of a specialist forward, instead of the versatile Trengove.
13 St Kilda
Sam Blease
Real Pick - Tom Lynch
Blease would be taken a few picks later.
14 Western
Ayce Cordy
Real Pick - Ayce Cordy
The father/son pick so nothing to predict here.
15 Geelong
Jordan Lisle
Real Pick - Mitchell Brown
Right type of player, a tall forward/defender.
16 Hawthorn
Phil Davis
Real Pick - Ryan Schoenmakers
Not many would have had Schoenmakers at this spot in their phantom drafts.
17 Melbourne
Shaun McKernan
Real Pick - Sam Blease
This guess seemed a little late for McKernan, but it wasn't late enough as he slid through to the Crows.
18 West Coast
Michael Walters
Real Pick - Luke Shuey
Went interstate with the pick when there were a lot of WA players to pick, Walters went nowhere near this part of the draft.
19 Melbourne
David Zaharakis
Real Pick - James Strauss
Zaharakis would go a few picks later.
20 West Coast
Matthew Broadbent
Real Pick - Tom Swift
Swift is a swifter prospect than Broadbent, but similar in size.
21 Fremantle
Lewis Johnston
Real Pick - Hayden Ballantyne
The Dockers could have used a tall forward, like the player taken with the next pick in the real draft, Johnston went a bit earlier in the draft to Sydney.
22 Port Adelaide
Jarrad Redden
Real Pick - Jackson Trengove
The Power would pick Redden later in the real draft.
23 Essendon
Ashley Smith
Real Pick - David Zaharakis
Smith and Zaharakis can both run, and that is what Essendon needed at this pick in the draft.
24 Fremantle
Matt DeBoer
Real Pick - Nick Suban
A similar type of player, but not a good guess as DeBoer is still available to be selected.
25 Brisbane
Aaron Cornelius
Real Pick - Jack Redden
The right team for Cornelius, a few rounds early.
26 Richmond
Nick Heyne
Real Pick - Jayden Post
The Heyne draft slide was well underway at this point.
27 North Melbourne
Nick Suban
Real Pick - Sam Wright
Had Suban in the right area of the draft.
28 Adelaide
Rhys O’Keeffe
Real Pick - Shaun McKernan
O’Keeffe was only beginning to slide during the real draft, while the McKernan slide stopped at this pick.
29 Collingwood
Rory Sloane
Real Pick - Dayne Beams
Went with a different type of possible onballer.
30 Sydney
Tom Lynch
Real Pick - Daniel Hannebery
Swans got a tall forward earlier in the real draft, and Lynch was already taken at this pick.
31 Western
Ryan Schoenmakers
Real Pick - Jordan Roughead
Predicted they would add some more height here, but they added a lot more than expected.
32 Western
Mitch Robinson
Real Pick - Liam Jones
Right state, wrong player.
33 Geelong
Tom Rockliff
Real Pick - Tom Gillies
At least the "Tom" part was right.
34 Hawthorn
Jamie Sheahan
Real Pick - Liam Shiels
Sheahan dropped all the way to be available in the preseason and rookie drafts.
35 Melbourne
Jordan Roughead
Real Pick - Jamie Bennell
Melbourne certainly didn't think they needed the size that someone like Roughead has, in the mock draft Roughead went just a tad earlier to the Bulldogs.
36 West Coast
Clancee Pearce
Real Pick - Ashley Smith
Could both be played in the same spot by West Coast, but Smith is a lot quicker.
37 Fremantle
Rhys Stanley
Real Pick - Zac Clarke
Both project ruckmen, the Dockers went with the taller one.
38 Port Adelaide
Steven Motlop
Real Pick - Matthew Broadbent
The Power did need to use this pick if they wanted Motlop, he went with the next pick in the draft.
39 Geelong
Daniel Hannebery
Real Pick - Steven Motlop
Hannebery went just a bit earlier, to Sydney.
40 Carlton
Paul Cahill
Real Pick - Mitch Robinson
Seems illogical, that they didn't get a key position player in the draft.
41 Brisbane
Dayne Beams
Real Pick - Todd Banfield
Lions went midfield, as predicted, but Beams was already gone by this pick.
42 Port Adelaide
Christopher Hall
Real Pick - Mitchell Banner
Similar in size, the Power preferred to go out of state with this pick.
43 North Melbourne
Caleb Tiller
Real Pick - Liam Anthony
What Tiller could do for the Kangaroos in 3 years, Anthony may provide for them in 2009.
44 Adelaide
Alex Stopp
Real Pick - Rory Sloane
The Crows did go big with most of their picks, with this pick in the real draft they went small.
45 Collingwood
Luke Shuey
Real Pick - Jarrad Blight
Shuey went early to the Eagles with their priority pick.
46 Collingwood
Riley Milne
Real Pick - Luke Rounds
The Magpies did pick a defender, but a veteran one in Leigh Brown later in the draft.
47 St Kilda
Taylor Hunt
Real Pick - Rhys Stanley
Hunt would last a couple more picks in the real draft.
48 St Kilda
Mitchell Brown
Real Pick - Nick Heyne
Heyne might have been considered by teams much earlier in the draft, which was where Brown went.
49 Geelong
James Strauss
Real Pick - Taylor Hunt
Strauss went a lot earlier.
50 Hawthorn
Luke Stanton
Real Pick - Jordan Lisle
The Lisle slide stopped here, but Stanton wasn't drafted.
51 Melbourne
Neville Jetta
Real Pick - Neville Jetta
A lucky guess later in the mock draft.
52 West Coast
Hayden Ballantyne
Real Pick - Jordan Jones
Had the right state for Ballantyne.
53 Fremantle
Liam Anthony
Real Pick - Michael Walters
Anthony became a Kangaroo a few picks before this.
54 Port Adelaide
Michael Gugliotta
Real Pick - Jarrad Redden
Gugliotta went undrafted.
55 Essendon
Steven Gaertner
Real Pick - Michael Still
Both are tall projects.
56 Fremantle
Ian Richardson
Real Pick - Ben Bucovaz
The Dockers went with a few players similar to Richardson, and could still take him as a rookie.
57 Brisbane
Sam McGarry
Real Pick - Aaron Cornelius
Brisbane are probably wondering how Cornelius was still available here.
58 Richmond
Casey Sibosado
Real Pick - Tom Hislop
Everyone was hyping Sibosado leading up to the draft, and then he went undrafted.
59 North Melbourne
Mitch Banner
Real Pick - Nathan O'Keefe
Banner went earlier.
60 Adelaide
Jay Shannon
Real Pick - Tom Lee
Crows went tall a lot, and didn't take the local midfielder Shannon.
61 Sydney
Kade Klemke
Real Pick - Campbell Heath
Klemke might go in the preseason draft.
62 St Kilda
Peter Rolfe
Real Pick - Alistair Smith
Rolfe again wasn't picked in the national draft, the curse of the division 2 player could be one reason.
63 Hawthorn
Alistair Smith
Real Pick - Luke Lowden
The Smith prediction was close, he went one pick before this.
64 Melbourne
Sam Wright
Real Pick - Rohan Bail
Wright would have been the right guess at pick 27.
65 Carlton
Zachary Ledin
Real Pick - Rhys O'Keeffe
Ledin wasn't picked.
66 Port Adelaide
Matthew Martin
Real Pick - Glenn Dawson
Martin may be training with the Power at the moment, and may get onto their list as a rookie.
67 Essendon
Zach Sengstock
Real Pick - Tyson Slattery
Back line help was drafted here.
68 Fremantle
Luke Jericho
Real Pick - Tim Ruffles
Jericho probably isn't playing AFL in 2009.
69 Brisbane
Jarrad Blight
Real Pick - Bart McCulloch
Blight went to the Magpies.
70 Richmond
Tom Hill
Real Pick - PASS
They could still get him in the preseason draft.
71 North Melbourne
Liam Jones
Real Pick - Warren Benjamin
Jones went to the Bulldogs many picks earlier.
72 Adelaide
Andrew Browne
Real Pick - Will Young
The Crows had some strange picks, and not grabbing a real big ruckman was one of them.
73 Collingwood
PASS
Real Pick - Leigh Brown
Collingwood said this might happen, but it was still a surprise.
74 St Kilda
Zachary Clarke
Real Pick - Paul Cahill
Clarke was considered too good a prospect by the Dockers to get down to this part of the draft.
75 Hawthorn
PASS
Real Pick - Shane Savage
An unexpected move, something could have happened with the preseason draft, maybe they could have lured another player out of retirement.
76 Melbourne
PASS
Real Pick - PASS
Passing was a sensible move, in case someone very good became available for the preseason draft.
77 Fremantle
PASS
Real Pick - Chris Hall
A surprise that they were going to use all their picks, and not save anything for the preseason draft.
78 Port Adelaide
Tyson Slattery
Real Pick - Jason Davenport
Should have known that the Power wanted to give someone a second chance with a late draft pick.
79 Essendon
PASS
Real Pick - PASS
A correct prediction.
80 Carlton
Ben Bucovaz
Real Pick - Caleb Tiller
These two could be similar versatile players in the future.
81 Brisbane
Dylan McNeil
Real Pick - Kieran King
Right type of player, more midfield help for Brisbane.
82 Brisbane
PASS
Real Pick - PASS
A correct guess, but it seems like a difficult prediction for their preseason pick.
83 St Kilda
PASS
Real Pick - Colm Begley
A surprise that the Saints didn't want a preseason selection.
84 Port Adelaide
PASS
Real Pick - PASS
Everyone knew this pick would not be used so they could get their Carr back.
85 Carlton
PASS
Real Pick - PASS
A correct guess, although every year the last thing called out is usually "pass".
1 Melbourne
Jack Watts
Real Pick - Jack Watts
A correct guess, not that everyone else didn't also say Watts is the name for Melbourne.
2 West Coast
Nicholas Naitanui
Real Pick - Nicholas Naitanui

46 Collingwood
Riley Milne
Real Pick - Luke Rounds
The Magpies did pick a defender, but a veteran one in Leigh Brown later in the draft.
47 St Kilda
Taylor Hunt
Real Pick - Rhys Stanley
Hunt would last a couple more picks in the real draft.
48 St Kilda
Mitchell Brown
Real Pick - Nick Heyne
Heyne might have been considered by teams much earlier in the draft, which was where Brown went.
49 Geelong
James Strauss
Real Pick - Taylor Hunt
Strauss went a lot earlier.
50 Hawthorn
Luke Stanton
Real Pick - Jordan Lisle
The Lisle slide stopped here, but Stanton wasn't drafted.
51 Melbourne
Neville Jetta
Real Pick - Neville Jetta
A lucky guess later in the mock draft.
52 West Coast
Hayden Ballantyne
Real Pick - Jordan Jones
Had the right state for Ballantyne.
53 Fremantle
Liam Anthony
Real Pick - Michael Walters
Anthony became a Kangaroo a few picks before this.
54 Port Adelaide
Michael Gugliotta
Real Pick - Jarrad Redden
Gugliotta went undrafted.
55 Essendon
Steven Gaertner
Real Pick - Michael Still
Both are tall projects.
56 Fremantle
Ian Richardson
Real Pick - Ben Bucovaz
The Dockers went with a few players similar to Richardson, and could still take him as a rookie.
57 Brisbane
Sam McGarry
Real Pick - Aaron Cornelius
Brisbane are probably wondering how Cornelius was still available here.
58 Richmond
Casey Sibosado
Real Pick - Tom Hislop
Everyone was hyping Sibosado leading up to the draft, and then he went undrafted.
59 North Melbourne
Mitch Banner
Real Pick - Nathan O'Keefe
Banner went earlier.
60 Adelaide
Jay Shannon
Real Pick - Tom Lee
Crows went tall a lot, and didn't take the local midfielder Shannon.
61 Sydney
Kade Klemke
Real Pick - Campbell Heath
Klemke might go in the preseason draft.
62 St Kilda
Peter Rolfe
Real Pick - Alistair Smith
Rolfe again wasn't picked in the national draft, the curse of the division 2 player could be one reason.
63 Hawthorn
Alistair Smith
Real Pick - Luke Lowden
The Smith prediction was close, he went one pick before this.
64 Melbourne
Sam Wright
Real Pick - Rohan Bail
Wright would have been the right guess at pick 27.
65 Carlton
Zachary Ledin
Real Pick - Rhys O'Keeffe
Ledin wasn't picked.
66 Port Adelaide
Matthew Martin
Real Pick - Glenn Dawson
Martin may be training with the Power at the moment, and may get onto their list as a rookie.
67 Essendon
Zach Sengstock
Real Pick - Tyson Slattery
Back line help was drafted here.
68 Fremantle
Luke Jericho
Real Pick - Tim Ruffles
Jericho probably isn't playing AFL in 2009.
69 Brisbane
Jarrad Blight
Real Pick - Bart McCulloch
Blight went to the Magpies.
70 Richmond
Tom Hill
Real Pick - PASS
They could still get him in the preseason draft.
71 North Melbourne
Liam Jones
Real Pick - Warren Benjamin
Jones went to the Bulldogs many picks earlier.
72 Adelaide
Andrew Browne
Real Pick - Will Young
The Crows had some strange picks, and not grabbing a real big ruckman was one of them.
73 Collingwood
PASS
Real Pick - Leigh Brown
Collingwood said this might happen, but it was still a surprise.
74 St Kilda
Zachary Clarke
Real Pick - Paul Cahill
Clarke was considered too good a prospect by the Dockers to get down to this part of the draft.
75 Hawthorn
PASS
Real Pick - Shane Savage
An unexpected move, something could have happened with the preseason draft, maybe they could have lured another player out of retirement.
76 Melbourne
PASS
Real Pick - PASS
Passing was a sensible move, in case someone very good became available for the preseason draft.
77 Fremantle
PASS
Real Pick - Chris Hall
A surprise that they were going to use all their picks, and not save anything for the preseason draft.
78 Port Adelaide
Tyson Slattery
Real Pick - Jason Davenport
Should have known that the Power wanted to give someone a second chance with a late draft pick.
79 Essendon
PASS
Real Pick - PASS
A correct prediction.
80 Carlton
Ben Bucovaz
Real Pick - Caleb Tiller
These two could be similar versatile players in the future.
81 Brisbane
Dylan McNeil
Real Pick - Kieran King
Right type of player, more midfield help for Brisbane.
82 Brisbane
PASS
Real Pick - PASS
A correct guess, but it seems like a difficult prediction for their preseason pick.
83 St Kilda
PASS
Real Pick - Colm Begley
A surprise that the Saints didn't want a preseason selection.
84 Port Adelaide
PASS
Real Pick - PASS
Everyone knew this pick would not be used so they could get their Carr back.
85 Carlton
PASS
Real Pick - PASS
A correct guess, although every year the last thing called out is usually "pass".

AFL Season Could Be Cancelled, A Different AFL
If you watch the international sports news, you may see something about an AFL season being in doubt. The Arena Football League is the AFL that is being mentioned.
From ESPN: AFL board of directors votes not to suspend season, but league still in limbo
From ESPN: AFL board of directors votes not to suspend season, but league still in limbo
The AFL's board of directors met via conference call Wednesday night but "despite rumors and reports to the contrary" did not suspend the upcoming season.
The 16-team league repeatedly has delayed the start of free agency and the release of its 2009 schedule after an offseason of uncertainty. No replacement has been named for longtime commissioner David Baker, who abruptly resigned in July two days before the ArenaBowl championship game.
AFL News - Reid Going Back
The Magpies added the veteran Leigh Brown to help their back line, and will also see if Reid will be an option for them at that spot too.
From the Collingwood site: Reid moves down back
AFL Fantasy Impact:
This is good news for his fantasy footy potential. With big forward Cloke and Rocca, there wasn't a solid role for Reid up forward.
From the Collingwood site: Reid moves down back
After being drafted with the club’s eighth overall pick in the 2006 AFL National Draft, Reid played in the VFL and in the AFL as a forward. It wasn’t until he returned from a foot injury sustained in round 13, did the club play him as a tall defender in the last VFL game of the season.
“They are saying they will be trying me out in the backline this preseason and see how I go there,” Reid told CTV after the Wednesday training session.
AFL Fantasy Impact:

AFL News - More North Melbourne Positional Moves
A few days ago, the Kangaroos were turning forward Tarrant into a defender. Now they are moving Hansen back to the forward line.
From the AFL site: Forward thinking right for Hansen
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Fantasy coaches at the moment have as much of an idea of the North Melbourne setup as Coach Laidley does. It is going to be crowded with McIntosh, Petrie and Hale all healthy. The Kangaroos have to find spots around them for some of Hansen, Tarrant, Josh Smith, Firrito, Watt, Edwards, Goldstein and Corey Jones.
From the AFL site: Forward thinking right for Hansen
Joining assistant coach Darren Bewick's group has given the 20-year-old a strong indication he'll be used in attack, moving up from the drifting spare-parts role he's held to this stage of his career.
"It's a little bit different to last year where I was more a defender," Hansen said. "But I'm enjoying training as a forward, learning all of the new plays that we're doing."

AFL News - Highway To The Dangerfield
"Rodney" Dangerfield has a lot of people at the Crows, and elsewhere, excited. In 2009, plenty will be expected from him, as the Dangerfield versus Ebert debate continues.
From the Herald Sun: Danger: Crows have new Roo
AFL Fantasy Impact:
He should be cheap enough to have on a fantasy bench to start the season. Dangerfield playing more will probably reduce the fantasy stats of other young Crows, like Otten. He could also push aside one of the Crows’ older midfielders.
From the Herald Sun: Danger: Crows have new Roo
"Patty's going to have a big, strong body like Ricciuto, he'll play similar positions, he's going to be a bit of a bull like Roo because he's super-courageous and super-tough, and given time he's going to develop into that type of player.
"Like Ricciuto, he might initially play off a half-back flank, but eventually he'll go onball and play forward as well."
AFL Fantasy Impact:

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Leroy Jetta
Leroy Jetta: A very speculative pick at the moment, the preseason games and official fantasy prices will help determine if L Jetta is a bargain. Jetta could be at a very affordable price, and a fantasy forward that gets some midfield minutes for his AFL team. Essendon have been very slow, and they are looking to fix that so players like Jetta, Dyson, Davey and Zaharakis could see a lot of action.

AFL News - Winning In 2011, Or Getting The Coach A New Contract
The newspaper has a picture of Polak jumping at training and a story about Richmond wanting to put him on the rookie list because he is injured. The Tigers may not get their wish to free up another senior list spot.
At least the last pick of the preseason draft will be something exciting, as the coach looks for that extra player to get Richmond into the finals and to get a big contract extension for himself.
From the AFL site: Tigers seek Polak's move to rookie list
AFL Fantasy Impact:
If Polak does go to the rookie list, it won't change his fantasy price but will make it harder for him to play a game. With the new rookie rule that allows them to play in the second half of the season, that could be when fantasy teams might think about Polak.
With the way Richmond are going about their offseason, trading for Thomson and drafting Hislop, it could mean that very young players won't be in the team. So fantasy coaches may want to stay away from Vickery, Post, Rance and other youngsters if Richmond are going with a win-now plan. That could be good news for Bowden, who could again be one of the top fantasy players.

However, the League said in a statement that general manager of football operations Adrian Anderson had written to the other 15 clubs to seek their views on Richmond’s request.
The AFL Commission will then make a final ruling at its hearing on Monday, December 15.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Aaron Sandilands
Aaron Sandilands: There are a lot of reasons to have Aaron Sandilands on a fantasy AFL team in 2009. As everyone knows, he is tall, and in Dream Team that means a lot of total hitouts, as compared to SuperCoach where they probably only count the effective hitouts. Another fact that everyone knows, the Dockers only have one real ruckman. Bradley and Gilmore are the undersized backups, Clarke is going to take a few years to be strong enough for the AFL, the Dockers do not have ruck depth so Sandilands will have a lot of minutes available. If Warnock was still there, he could have taken some playing time off Aaron Sandilands, but he has moved along to Carlton. Sandilands has the potential for a good amount of stats, especially if he can mark effectively up forward and kick a few goals too.

AFL News - C Cornes Now Enthusiastic And Fresh
The great drafting by the Power will benefit them in the future, but for the Power to get back to the finals in 2009 they will need their veterans to be in top form and healthy. Chad Cornes should have a big 2009 after a lot of injuries in 2008.
From the AFL site: Cornes-fed mission
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Chad Cornes could be the first player that fantasy coaches sign when constructing their 2009 teams. Possibly at a bargain price, and the type of game that can dominate fantasy leagues, C Cornes should also be a fantasy captain option too.
From the AFL site: Cornes-fed mission
“I was disappointed with the way I handled a few things last year, but I’m trying to put it behind me and forget about it. I can’t change it now and [new fitness coach] Cam Falloon has really brought a lot of enthusiasm and freshness to the group. I’m really positive about next year.”
The plate and screws have been removed from his finger and he has set his sights on a bigger and better 2009 after undergoing successful knee and shoulder surgery.

AFL News - R Tarrant To the North Melbourne Back Line
Drafted as a forward prospect, it seems the only vacancy for Robbie Tarrant could be in the back line for the Kangaroos.
From the AFL site: Shoulder reco won't stop Roo Tarrant
AFL Fantasy Impact:
2008 was not a good time to have a Tarrant on a fantasy team. Chris is a big risk in 2009, but Robbie is a cheap option for the bench.
From the AFL site: Shoulder reco won't stop Roo Tarrant
The highly-rated youngster has just undergone his third shoulder reconstruction in as many years but his attitude remains positive.
Tarrant is looking forward to getting opportunities in a defensive group managed by assistant coach Darren Crocker and former backman Leigh Colbert.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
2008 was not a good time to have a Tarrant on a fantasy team. Chris is a big risk in 2009, but Robbie is a cheap option for the bench.
The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Luke Ball
Luke Ball: A healthy Luke Ball should be able to get the type of stats that Kirk did when he was at the peak of his game. Ball could lead the AFL in tackles, and get over 20 possessions a game. Harvey is gone, so Ball should take on more of a veteran role there, and that could help his stats.

AFL News - Kerr Taking His Time
The Eagles kept Kerr with a big, new contract and won't be rushing him back early as he recovers from injury.
From The West Australian: Kerr on ice for NAB Cup opener
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Kerr was supposed to be a fantasy star last season and that didn't happen, his price for 2009 will be very tempting and fantasy coaches will want to see what he does when he takes the field later in the preseason games.
From The West Australian: Kerr on ice for NAB Cup opener
West Coast are set to put Daniel Kerr in cotton wool for the start of the NAB Cup, in a bid to protect the ace midfielder’s injured knee from the wear and tear which inhibited him this year.
“We won’t be asking Kerrie to play in the first game,” Daniher said. “The second game is February 28th and we will be looking for some of our senior players around that stage.”
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Kerr was supposed to be a fantasy star last season and that didn't happen, his price for 2009 will be very tempting and fantasy coaches will want to see what he does when he takes the field later in the preseason games.
Mock Preseason Draft
Some of the names that may be announced for the upcoming preseason draft.
1 Melbourne
Andrew Browne (202cm, 106kg, ruckman)
They do need more ruckmen on their list, and they couldn't be serious about wanting to redraft Chris Johnson after drafting so many running players in the national draft.
2 Port Adelaide
Josh Carr (178cm, 81kg, midfielder)
This was known months ago.
3 Essendon
Jamie Sheahan (178cm, 73kg, midfielder/small forward)
Maybe they will soon announce that Skipworth, or Nahas, will be the pick but maybe they go younger with a quick player like Sheahan.
4 Carlton
Chris Johnson (188cm, 87kg, midfielder/medium defender)
He still seems like he will end up there, but it isn't a great spot for him and a starting position for Johnson in their best 22 wasn't helped by Carlton drafting Robinson, Yarran and O'Keeffe.
5 Brisbane
Tom Rockliff (183cm, 83kg, small forward)
Instead of an old Nick Davis, they can get a youngster to do the same thing in the forward line.
6 Richmond
Ian Richardson (179cm, 74kg, small forward)
Richmond win when they have Richardson kicking goals, so here is a small player to help their big star.
Here is a story about Melbourne, and more mismanagement there as they talk about getting Johnson back.
From The Age: Demons may re-draft disgruntled defender

From The Age: Demons may re-draft disgruntled defender
"If Chris Johnson is the best player in the draft, we'll draft him back," said Connolly. "Our position is he would be considered if he's the best available player."
Melbourne has said it was open-minded about the first pick in the pre-season draft, and would consider either an untried kid or a seasoned player, however, whether they've played AFL or not, the club has a preference for younger players.

The Possible Dream Team 2009 Fantasy Team - Chris Newman
Chris Newman: He is in charge at Richmond now, so he should continue to get a lot of the ball, and might even increase a few stats as other players look for him even more. With Bowden playing forward sometimes, it doesn't leave a lot of skill by foot available in the Richmond back line, so that should mean a lot of kicks for Newman. He may also show his leadership by moving himself into the middle when Richmond need a boost and that would be useful for his stats too.

AFL News - J W Smith Injury Recovery, Once More
A progress report on one of the more injury-prone players around. Along with Tom Williams and Sean Rusling, Jesse W Smith can't stay healthy but 2009 could be his year and he may surprise all by playing 22 games.
From the Herald Sun: Jesse Smith relishes the pre-season pain at North Melbourne
AFL Fantasy Impact:
An injury-interrupted 2008 which means a lower fantasy price for the upcoming season, a return to health and midfield minutes in 2009 but still position eligible as a fantasy defender, once again Smith could be a big fantasy AFL bargain.
From the Herald Sun: Jesse Smith relishes the pre-season pain at North Melbourne
Smith's body let him down again in 2008, restricting him to just two senior appearances.
Another motivating factor for Smith, who has played predominantly off half-back, is the lure of more time in the midfield.
